Carnal Tomb - Festering Presence

Festering Presence - 80%

Nattskog7, September 21st, 2023
Written based on this version: 2021, 7" vinyl, Lycanthropic Chants (Limited edition, two colours)

Germany’s Carnal Tomb are a band who deliver high quality Swedish style death metal at an alarmingly regular rate yet without faltering it seems.

Storms of violent riffing fires into fruition atop maniacal blastbeats and met with meaty, savage vocals. This is exactly the sound Carnal Tomb have always delivered yet this time with a bit of the drudging rhythmic influence from a band like Cianide, only accentuating the filthy putrescence of their sound. Morbid tremolo picked assaults ensnare vicious grooving hooks for a skull-splitting, grave-grooving and deliciously grotesque listen that is remorseless across the two tracks.

Naturally the comparisons to Swedish greats would be redundant but I think the closes example here would be Bloodbath in terms of sheer brutality and high-speed aggression over the more common d-beat driven Swe-death approach. Fetid riffs fester from start to end with not one being lacklustre, equally impressive is the formidable drumming onslaught and insanely barbaric vocals. Rupturing rhythms give way to some glorious solos too, giving us a complete showcase of the brilliance Carnal Tomb are capable of.

Check them out, this 8 minutes of macabre death metal will be worth your time, as will the rest of their discography to date.
