Carnal Leftovers hails from the rural town of Zwolle, which has spawned quite some interesting bands in the past. Initially starting out as a continuation of the band Caldron, it quickly became charismatic frontman Michel Matteman's plaything. Upon attracting a drummer who could play quite fastpaced blastbeats (Misha, formerly Imbolc), the fun could begin and quickly after the line-up was set in stone, recording began for this first sign of life.
It is obvious that the members of Carnal Leftovers have a love for old school death metal and absurd lyrical themes. A song like "Fluffy Teddybears" is basically a blueprint for their style of music. Cannibal Corpse-like riffing and grooves mix with all kinds of ripped off musical fragments. Even Carcass' paramount riff of "Corporeal Jigsore Quandary" gets regurgitated into a somewhat pale shadow of its former self. Guitars are downtuned to B, occasionaly creating a hardcore feel, but rest assured, this is genuine death metal. Just not very original.
The production of these three songs (including an intro and outro by some mailorder guitar teacher Wolf Harris) is pretty weak, fitting for what might eventually become a classic first demo (or maybe not). But all in all, you can hear these guys having a lot of fun creating and performing their songs.
Since the release of "Fluffy Teddybears", Carnal Leftovers have acclaimed a good 'live' reputation, with their current highpoint being the already legendary Stonehenge gig, which will also be released on cd.
Concluding I would like to quote the bands biography: "We're here to put the 'Fun' back in 'Funeral'". Cheers to that!
