Brain Drill - Apocalyptic Feasting

An Exercise in Futility - 5%

Svartekrist, September 21st, 2011

There is no doubt in neither heaven or hell that the guys from Brain Drill can play their instruments. They are skilled and it clearly shows, and not only are they simply skilled, they manage to play technically advanced music at a fast pace. Come to think of it, it may not be that impressive, but still, it sort of is. Technically advanced music at a fast pace is however only half of what the description for Apocalyptic Feasting. The rest? Here you go.

The drums are usually what gives the music from a band most of the force and strength, and here it is no exception. But that does not mean the performance is good. Yes, it is all very technical and fast and brutal and all of that. But it all falls short on quality of performance and structure. It is a mess. The guitars go into the same slot. Fast and technical stuff, but with barely any structure, and more or less used as a tool to show of the players proficiency. This is first class guitar masturbation. As for the bass guitar, it is mixed and drowned to a near nonexistent state of being. It does something, it is technical, but at the same time, it does nothing. The vocals do not do much better. These are high pitched growls with a metallic tinge to them. And in the long run, they can become very annoying.

The production and mixing is, technically speaking, good. The bass is heavily drowned, but can be heard and does nothing. As for songwriting, it is hard to find anything this fast, dynamic, brutal, intense technical death metal that is so boring. You would think that skill is everything needed, but Apocalyptic Feasting has a severe lack of creativity and vision. As for chemistry between the members, now anyway, it is clear it did not work out too well. So if you did not figure it out, the problems are these. There is very little structure and very little to be gained from listening to this. It has no direction, vision or any sense of creativity.

In short, you will either love what Brain Drill offer, or you will hate it. There is not really anything in between as the result known as Apocalyptic Feasting is either black or white.

Stand-out tracks: There are none.
