Bowel Fetus / Offal - Putr-essence / Untitled

Rotten to the Core! - 70%

faithlessasshole, December 10th, 2019
Written based on this version: 2008, CD, The Hole Productions

Blood sucking freaks and addicted to gore from all over the world rejoice on this putrid split cd. The hole Productions presents two of the most depraved bands mankind has vomited; Offal from Brazil and Bowel Fetus from Australia in an insane demonstration of goregrind and grindcore.

First thing that caught my attention were the cd covers. Presented on a black, white and grey pallet, both front covers are a tribute to most degenerated and disgusting aspects of humanity; Offal presenting a disembowelment scene and Bowel Fetus presenting as very gory birth landscape. Without a doubt a very explicit approach that prepares you to the debauchery about to experience.

On one side we have Offal, these guys homage 70´s giallo movies and the sound of the death metal legend Impetigo in the 4 songs that compose the first part of the split. Giallo movies was a cinematographic subgenre mostly exploited from Italian directors like Dario Argento and Sergio Martino during the 70´s and 80´s. We can evidence the giallo tribute in the lyrics for the song “Torso” that is actually the name of a Sergio Martino movie from 1973. “An Italian fixation for dismembering corpses” grunts the singer in the first line of that track. The gore grinding execution that Offal displays during the 4 tracks is decent, intense and above the average, the songwriting is simple and does not show off technical virtues, only sickness and violence.

On the other side of the split and coming from the other side of the planet, we have, Bowel Fetus. This Australian band takes a more crushing approach with a range of slow almost doom like executions and sudden burst of violence in the form of grindcore. There are only two songs composing Bowel Fetus side of the split, “Room 33” and “Mary tofts´ rabbit meat” that show a gurgling vocal conception that defies any comprehension of what the singer is regurgitating in lyrical form. There isn´t much more to say about Bowel Fetus, two songs in my opinion are not enough to really give a strong opinion of musicianship, composition and musical concept.

In conclusion, I had a good time listening to de degenerations and regurgitations that Offal and Bowel Fetus present in this split but I consider it was a very short listen, only 11 minutes. I would like, specially Bowel Fetus, to present a couple more tracks to really get into their musical concept. I´m looking forward to listen more about these two bands in the near future, in the meantime, I have two giallos to watch, Torso and Bloodsucking Freaks.
