I first heard Borealis when they opened for Edguy in October of 2008. I was immediately blown away and in my opinion they were better than Edguy. Naturally, I had to buy the CD they had available. I put it in the CD player on the way home and was blown away.
I’ll admit, this album does take a few lessons to thoroughly get, but there are a few standout tracks that you should notice on your first listen. The album kicks off with “Lost Voices” which is the most accessible song and in my opinion is the definition of power metal. The song features a very catchy chorus alongside many guitar solos and a couple of keyboard solos. The title track also stands out immediately with its opening riff kicking off what would be a song that truly shreds.
Perhaps the best thing about this album is the talent of the musicians. The drumming on this album is fantastic and the fills are awesome. The guitar solos are frequent and feature lots of shredding as well as melody. The vocals are standard power metal vocals, but very enjoyable nonetheless. The bass is a bit hard to hear, but it does what it needs to. The keyboards however are outstanding! I’ve never been into very much symphonic metal, but the keyboards fit perfectly with every song, especially on “From The Fading Screams” and “The Afterlife”.
This album is truly amazing is one of the undiscovered gems in power metal. After fully absorbing the album, it stands out in my collection as one of the best. Borealis is working on their next album now and hopefully it will be as great as this one!
