I've seen this band around alot but never tried them, until today. This album is kinda better than what I was expecting, honestly. Interesting mixture of sounds that all fit together.
This may be a slamming brutal death metal album, but it has lots grind vibes in the guitar work, as well as having deathcore vibes in the guitars too. The deathcore can easily be heard in the beginning of Ganja Gasmask Mass Suicide, sounds alot like Infant Annihilator and Whitechapel musically. Speaking of Whitechapel, sometimes the vocals sound ALOT like Phil Bozeman, it's crazy. Sometimes it also sounds like Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation, this album is all over the place with the extra influence added in. Slamming brutal death metal with grind vibes, deathcore vibes, and vocals that sound alot like Phil Bozeman and Travis Ryan. Aside from the usual slam gutturals, there's screams added in too at some parts, I appreciate the variation in the vocals big time. I wasn't expecting this much variety, or anything GREAT coming from this album at all honestly, but now that I've listened to it I can definitely say it's an interesting mix and fits together. Pretty good album.
When I started playing this I wasn't a huge fan of the snare, as it sounded pretty soft and buried in the first song. But it got better, and I started to hear it more clearly past the first track; and it goes good with the grind-esque guitars. Even though the snare doesn't have the ideal clanky solid sound (which is GREAT for slam), it all works out eventually and works. Some parts of the album are "interludish", like an acoustic guitar part for example, i.e., the last track Nothing but Stems.... I wouldn't say it's AMAZING or anything, but it's cool and kinda enjoyable and funny, especially for an outro. There's some samples throughout the album, not really much of a bother but they're there. None of the songs are bad, like I previously said; the entire album is a giant mix of slamming death with several other vibes from similar genres, and it's awesome.
The Last Session of the Dopified Apostles may be one of those random slam albums that have extra stuff added in that are generally "just okay", but the extra stuff here is pretty nice. Good amount of variety in a slam album, ESPECIALLY since it's a slam album. As I said before, I wasn't expecting this album to be that great, it's as good as it looks and seems. But behind the gross cover lies some pretty cool and interesting slam brutal death metal. Not bad at all, but not THE BEST THING EVER either, it's just pretty good. I suggest you give this a try if you come across it, you may not be dissapointed.
