Beside Malediction, Blood Rainbow is no doubt the best Hungarian death metal band. This EP is ‘til now the only material of them I owe, and I find it nearly perfect.
It’s debated what we call actually Swedish death metal: the old school things as early Entombed or those later melodic bands like At The Gates and The Crown? Blood Rainbow is nearer to the second group, but involves some American elements too: it’s more brutal and surprisingly technical. The song architectures are complex, the riffing is powerful and catchy, the production is also good.
In my opinion, though all the four tracks are very good, Reptilian Age and Pangea are outstandingly good. Blood Rainbow combines the fast brutal parts and the slower catchy ones very carefully, the amount is just good. Thanks for the complexity, the tracks are longer than what is usual in death metal, averagely about 5-6 minutes. But it doesn’t get boring at all: we find nice solos in every songs, varying riffs - there’s no filler part in any tracks. The vocals fit the music very well, it changes from harsh screams to deep growls and thrashy shouting. The singer’s voice is full of anger, just perfect!
I find this EP better than anything of Hypocrisy (for example). Really strong… but damn short! And I can easily imagine that the album I’ve not heard yet is even better! However, I can recommend this for fans of Swedish and American death metal fans too, and for those who like melodic death metal. I think In The Depths… can give something for all these people. Blood Rainbow would deserve a wider publicity, as one of the most talented Hungarian bands!
