Find a drummer! - 65%

torn, October 18th, 2005

At first, I was quite impressed by this record. The guitars sound raw and filthy, and the vocals are throaty and delivered slowly, which I tend to prefer to the high-pitched yapping used by many bands. There are a few impressive riffs, especially at the start of ‘Poison Trait’, and the guitars create a dark, melancholy atmosphere throughout the four songs.
The real letdown is the drum machine. I’m not at all opposed to drum machines if they’re done well, but on this record, the drums are barely audible, and when you can hear them, they don’t suit the music at all. There are no complex drum patterns (that I could hear, anyway), so I can’t believe it would be too hard for the band to find a drummer capable of playing this sort of music. They would certainly do well to find a drummer, as there is definite potential here. I’ll keep my ears open for future releases, but this EP doesn’t quite do it for me.
