Blessed by Perversion is a Greek death metal band like no other, sharing their anti-theism attitude. Greek is something special, whether it’s death metal or black metal. As a four-man band unleashing their arsenal with bits of catchy melodies, technicality, and angry death growls, Destroy the Image of God has you covered on those territories. Speaking of which, they’re right up my alley. Although I’m agnostic, you could say I’m “religiophobic”. I don’t like religions, but I respect people’s beliefs. You may find the band to be quite similar to the infamous Deicide, based on the vocals (the mishap between the brutal death growls and the phased shrieking ones of Glen Benton’s) and the melodies. However, the band has the whole Greek scene to cover for them, and they originate their own sound fairly well with their debut EP.
The first two songs showcase that signature Deicide riffage and vocals. The execution is decent, and off to a standard start. Despite the stretched portion of the first song, I liked the catchy, slow riffs and the bass lines, while the second one was tad repetitive. The rest of the EP is where the true talent hides. The songs are a lot heavier, faster, and brutal, with riffs that are fun to tune into, especially the slow melodies, while the bass sounds more technical than previously. Ending with Damned to Praise the Unholy Ones, it changes the pace of the EP. The band might’ve switched the tuning, or they just found the groovy riffs to execute on their current tuning, followed by consistent drum beats.
It would take a while until the band drops full-lengths worth of material. This excellent EP will do just fine in the meantime. Despite the inspiration from Deicide, they’re not inspired to the point they would be clones; be it the similar music or the lyrical themes. There’s no limit for which a band or artist expresses on lyrical themes, and this band has done a fine job on both the musical and lyrical aspects, and I look forward to hear more in the future. The best songs are Spirit Sacrifice on the Altar of God and Damned to Praise the Unholy Ones.
