Black Tribe - Promo

Dirty n' Raw - 78%

CannibalCorpse, February 1st, 2007

This is the first Black Tribe material I've heard so far and I'm glad I checked them out.

Black Tribe's sound is very dirty and raw, having a strong first-wave Black metal feel to it. Cacodaemon’s vocals are distorted and abrasive, working very well with the promo’s material. Good atmosphere is achieved through the use of ambient elements, choirs and acoustic guitar (which I wish was less sparse, but more about that later).

"Suffering" is your "typical" intro that some might render useless, but this one is a fairly good opening track consisting of ambience only. It's definitely setting the right tone for this promo.

"From the Depth of Hell" perfectly showcases the rawness of Cacodaemon's music. The production is gritty and heavy (due to the bass being perfectly audible) and shines with a strong oldschool vibe. The track is quite short, clocking in at a mere 2 minutes, but delivers.

“Intellectual Misogynism” is the first highlight of this promo, featuring some great background choirs and a well-done “chorus” with spoken vocals on top. I really enjoy the drumming here. It’s not technical by any means, but the beat is quite infectious. The rhythm section really shines through here.

“Drowning in Melancholy” is the next highlight and quite dynamic in its composition. Great rhythmic acoustic guitar playing interchanges with heavily distorted guitar rhythms and a few background choirs here and there. Vocals are sparse but add to the variety.

As I said early in this review, the acoustic guitar should be more prominent since Cacodaemon’s licks are quite intricate and pleasing. He also plays some well-executed and heavily distorted guitar riffs, but they are not always as memorable as they could be – but that is not a major fault in Black Tribe’s case.

The only song I found to be too repetitive and not exactly fitting, is “Bite It, You Scum”. I honestly haven’t heard the original before, but it doesn’t seem to fit Black Tribe’s style. I am a fan of adventurous cover versions, but this one just didn’t impress me. It’s grants one or two good listens, but it’s just too repetitive and at times sounds a bit dull. I can’t blame Cacodaemon though, since he’s not the original writer of the song.

Overall, this is a consistently strong demo with hints of excellence popping up once in a while. Recommended to all those who are out for some ripping Black metal.
