Of these 2 German heavy metal groups, Iron Kobra have by far the more illustrious history, having already released a few full-lengths, while their half of this 2 song split represents only the third recorded composition from Atom Smasher. In some ways, that’s the delight of such a release, because I quickly fell in love with ‘The Law’ (yes, that is prefaced by “heavy metal is” in the lyrics) above the relatively standard showing offered on ‘Malicious Magician’. Both acts remind of older German bands, sort of crossing early Helloween with USPM, with the more explorative features explored in Atom Smasher’s extended bridge - replete with insanely catchy repeated melodies - and slightly more mainstream implications in the gang vocals and catchy stomping beats that set up Iron Kobra’s effort. Though the playing style and production of the 2 sides bear some differences, the split adheres to old-school principles throughout.
Probably as much about a couple of bands getting exposure after some time away as any serious release, it nonetheless fits in with the Dying Victims Productions vibe to release a collectible 7” like this, with a high probability that fans of one band will find a new one to like by listening to both sides. Or, for people like me, you become suddenly keen on 2 new bands producing enthusiastic classic metal.
