Finally, fucking finally. A modern deathcore release with riffs. My life is not complete. It has been ages since At Rest last released something, and they seem to have been all but forgotten. When I first heard that they dropped this EP I didn't even know that they had reformed, let alone have anything to release. So I decided to check out their latest EP titled, "The Perversion of Morality." Let me tell you, these guys are really going to do great things with this style and sound they are going for. Its filled with riffs are really is a blast from the past for old school deathcore fans. It still just baffles me that this EP was released in 2017, its like 2007 never ended for these dudes and I am fucking loving it.
I got to say. The riffs are powerful with this EP. They really take a dark melodic influence on the riffs and I cannot get enough of it. They really manage to get you head banging with these riffs they just keep coming at you with. It was honestly extremely weird to type that about a deathcore band. I really think the riffs shine out in this instance of deathcore, keeping brutal yet melodic and beautiful throughout the album. It is really something to mosh to, but also to low-key cry too. It really just gets me going and is extremely memorable. I just need more of this band ASAP. With all this being said, they do have to occasional chug in their songs but it does not consume the entire song. It is mostly just during the breakdowns which is obviously fitting.
The drums on the album seem so far typical. Not so much in a bad way but they fit with the music. I just don't think I could point out anything special about them. They don't seem to blast beat all the time which is always a plus. Blast beats are annoying in large doses. The china cymbal seems to be frequently used quite a lot in the songs, which does get old but it fits. Just wish the drummers are was not so attracted to that cymbal.
The vocals for the most part are averages, but its nice to hear some normal highs in this modern game. This man does really have some of the best highs in the modern game I got to say. He doesn't do anything crazy like tunnel throats, or such. Just straight fry highs which really sound amazing and I prefer them to tunnels. He just really seemed to stick to the old school deathcore book and not do anything majorly crazy. I just really got to say these highs are something to remember. They fit with the dark gloomy atmosphere that all these songs have and they sound very sinister. It is really a highlight in my opinion on the album. More people should really look up to this guy for high screams. I would enjoy that a lot.
Overall, this is a damn good comeback release. They are bringing back old school deathcore and I just cannot get enough of this EP. After being out of the scene for so long its nice to see these guys have that old school melodic tough. As well as the very dark atmosphere and synths to go along in creating a damn good sinister sounding EP. I highly recommend for fans of old school deathcore. It is really a work of art and so far my favorite release of the year.
