Apostle of Solitude - Sincerest Misery

Really bad - 15%

ponyovdoom, June 30th, 2011

Unfortunately the pretty album cover and my friends fooled me saying this album was good. This four-piece doom metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana fails to satisfy my doom needs. There are some nice riffs here and there and a basslines to be heard at times, but it all seems too thin. The vocals are really bad I must admit.

The album kicks off with the song "The Messenger" which actually isn't bad, some nice riffing here, but from three minutes gone it goes downhill. These guys seems to sing about all in life that's bad, pain, sorrow, solitude and agony. And I think all of these things when I hear this album. A song like "Confess" gets drawn too long and I do feel the solitude listening to the same riff over and over and the horrible vocals. "The Dark Tower" doesn't help much, riffing in a high note sounding oh so depressing, then some heavy riffs kicks in, not changing much and this instrumental just wasted my time.

The vocals are clean and bad. The singer sounds like he's pretty new when it comes to singing and trying too much, he honestly annoys me. The bass is not really existant as earlier mentioned, only at few times and the drumming... I have not much to say about it, it's regular drumming.
"A Slow Suicide" almost feels real, some effected guitars kicking in and then it's over again with the drumming and the normal guitar tune. And the song is almost unending, with some bash bash drumming and "let's make this song a bit longer than usual, just because we can" thinking.

The general production is pretty decent and clear, so not any complaints at that point. Though you will get a different experience with the song "This Dustbowl Earth", which is a 8 minute jam that sounds like it's recorded from another room, it adds nothing new to this album. The last song, besides the Black Sabbath cover, "Sincerest Misery (1,000 Days)" is only 14 minutes long but is pretty miserable and feels like 1,000 days of just bam drumming and a slow riff over and over again, growing a little each time into... nothingness.

These guys unfortunately decide to end the album with a cover of a really awesome band which they manage to sound really bad. The singer now tries to sing a bit like Ozzy, and that sounds even worse. I feel sad for Black Sabbath.

So the conclusion is pretty much made in this review, don't get this record, it will be a waste of your time (unless you only listen to doom, have too much time and this is the last doom band to check out). The highlight is some of the reviews and the album cover, but the rest is really poor.
