Antagonist - Open Face Surgery

WAAAAY too much variation - 57%

This album just can't grab me. It has its moments here and there (first song specially), but as a whole this isn't memorable as it was trying too. By any means.

We start with "Pitbull on Crack". Now this is a damn good song. I'm not a fan of Eric Adams' (Manowar) vocals and in this EP the singer tries with all his effort to sound like him. Anyway, good break at 1:40, nicely joined by the vocals. The solo smokes, too. A very good song, overall.

Second song, "The War it Shall be". Nice intro riff, then the next isn't quite effective. And after, it loses me, I don't know why. Maybe I'm not a fan of this guys' approach. And the part at 1:17 doesn't work. Then there's a break at 1:36 that isn't quite consistent or grabbing. The song then goes on and on with really obnoxious moments here and there, returning to the first riff ocassionally.

Third track, "Revenge". WTF? Death metal? really fast trem riffing, then some hardcore-ish vocals, immediatly followed by a pattern that reminds me of [insert average norwegian ambient/black metal band here]. A few moments later, a break that's not bad. But, guys, make up your bloody minds. It seems like they try too hard to come up with something brilliant in terms of arrangements, but in exchange they are falling on their own asses. Nice guitars at 2:50, though. "Kill!", then a pattern that is black metal-ish in that Satyricon (!!) sort of way. Listen to "Mother North", then listen to this song again at 3:15, you'll be surprised.

Fourth tune, "Kill with Power", a Manowar cover, it seems. Obnoxious start, then things get going nicely in that cheesy way Manowar are so famous for. And the vocals clone Eric Adams, even with the screams, unbelievable, really. It would be a nice song, if it wasn't for the damn excessive wanking in the solo.

Song nĂºmero cinco, "Every Lie Ends in Murder". Beginning almost EXACTLY like Sarcofago's "I.N.R.I." (Damn, go figure). Then going on 1:34 with some bad Leprosy (Death) rip-off. It pretty much follows the approach of all previous songs: too much effort to sound brilliant with the riffs and arrangements resulting in excessive rhythm guitar wankery and the band trying to cover every possibility on fast picked tremolo riffing, while trying to show their Manowar influence as well. Yikes. And meh.

Fifth, "Get your Ass to Mars". I'm not even commenting on this one. They tried to cover a massive spectrum of metal and now they are stealing the Nuclear Assault "really-short-less-than-minute-song" idea? Please.

I mean, please.
