Could use some more inspiration - 65%

Anpher emerged in 2005 in the local metal scene from nowhere. After they released their first demo in January 2006, they became much talked about in the local circles. That was because this demo sounds better than anyone would expect, it is professionally recorded and mixed, and also shows considerable amount of potential for future.

Seems that members of Anpher have really taken their time to learn playing before they show it to anyone – a thing that doesn’t happen too often with the young bands. The songs are quite typical melodic death metal, more influenced by bands like Vehemence, Arsis and even Necrophagist than the Gothenburg wave. That partially explains why the musicianship on here is damn good, it’s certainly better than what you would expect from the first demo, although it may not be anything breathtaking either.

So far everything seems fine. But there is one cause for concern about this record: the songs are catchy, melodic, and flow well; can’t really complain about the songwriting for that matter, still they lack any kind of individuality. Everything on here has been done before by thousands of other bands, it’s the same kind of riffs, the same harmonies etc. The only somewhat memorable song is “The Incorruptible Judge”, which might be the simplest of them all, but at least the main riff sticks in your head for a while. And all that makes this record kind of useless. It really serves just as a demonstration – a demonstration of the music style they like to play and a demonstration of their technical abilities.

If they would inject some touch of uniqueness and indiviuality in their music, they could succeed at what they are doing; otherwise Anpher most probably will be one of already far too many faceless bands, recycling ideas that are worn out long ago.
