Ancient Wisdom - Cometh Doom, Cometh Death - 80%

mentalselfmutilation, September 26th, 2008

Ancient Wisdom is definitely one of the better bands in the symphonic black metal genre. No matter which album you pick up from this project Vargher, you'll definitely find something amazing. The album is truly a gem in the rough. The atmosphere is dark and eerie throughout. The guitars have quite a change of pace from each track being either the more standard tremolo-based riffing of most black metal past and present, while also mixing in the occasional dark tracks with very chugging doomy riffs as well that do nothing short but evoke a very dark if not sadistic sound in the music. The keyboards compliment well, something that is often very crucial when making powerful black metal material, with very slow melancholic piano parts playing very dark sounding melodies.

There is very little negative to say about this album. Is it the utmost best album I've heard from a symphonic band? No, not in the slightest. In fact, the symphonic elements of this record only help enhance the atmosphere, rather than create a shape on their own. It's pretty standard but on the better end of the symphonic black metal genre. Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of this stuff, and some of the more solid efforts from Ancient Wisdom as well!
