Agressor - Deathreat

One of the Better 2006 Releases - 85%

AlexFurgason, February 27th, 2007

Here's another band that I've only recently gotten into, having only heard their 2006 effort, Deathreat.

I'm a big fan of bands that blend more than one metal subgenre into a neat, functioning package, and Agressor seems to do just that on this release.
Along with the obvious death and thrash, I'm also seeing a hint of melodic and/or black influence on tracks such as 'Warrior Heart' or 'When Darkness...' (my personal favorite).
Not to mention the solo on When Darkness actually fits, which is a rarity in my experience with most death metal.

The production on this album is very clean, and crisp, which may or may not be the standard for 2006 releases, but on this album it's exceptional. The vocals are deep and coarse/throaty, with some higher pitched backing growls thrown in...and on one track I heard some chanting vocals in the background that were similar to Blut Aus Nord (I mean that in a good way, regardless of how much of an awful racket Blut Aus Nord is).
The drummer is precise and technical enough without being obnoxious, effortlessly blasting his way through most tracks, and the guitars can be somewhat likened to Abused Majesty's 2004 Serpenthrone album, only slightly faster. As with most death metal releases, I don't hear the bassist much, if at all.
Not that I care, but you might.

While on some tracks they seem to be suffering from some kind of Necrophagist syndrome (that is, playing a bunch of boring/technical riffs with no real direction), the majority of the album has some seriously thrashing songs, such as the ones mentioned earlier, or other tracks such as War in Heaven, or Lust of the Flesh.

The only reason I have it marked as 85 is because of the handful of songs that could've been a lot better had they used memorable riffs instead of succumbing to the above syndrome. I suggest downloading the highlighted tracks first before going out and buying it, honestly.
