Agathocles - Bastard Breed, We Don't Need! / The Mirror of Our Society

Crustcore deluxe - 92%

morbert, August 14th, 2008

This a truly a classic Agathocles EP. I’m of course never entirely sure, but I think this is their only 7" release on which there is not a single blastspeed drum! We’re talking about a famous grindcore band here and one of their best singles and yet no blast speed drum to be found.

After a short intro the band shows immediately how good they are at writing a straight forward and catchy crustcore song. “Fragments Of A Time To Come” has energetic punk style riffs and characteristic vocals. The energetic drums of Burt are the finishing touch.

Second highlight on this EP is third song “Jack’s Life”. This song is almost three minutes long and based upon one single riff which is played at two different tempi. The song is mostly mid paced and groovy but has a great fast and catchy chorus. Yet the song never gets dull. Quite an achievement considering it is de facto one single riff the whole time. The other songs are entertaining crustcore as well and one can only complain the EP is too short.

Another thing I must mention is the production. Agathocles have a reputation of releasing everything they record no matter how awful it may sound. This single however has a very good production and even the guitars sound mainstream yet powerful. The bassguitar is less prominent than we’re used to and the vocals are raw and honest. This EP is a gem in the collection of every Agathocles fan!
