“Sex Nex Quod Odium” is a top-notch release from this band. The album really works because it contains a diverse array of black metal riffs—or moods—ranging from the furious to the melodic to the tragic, so it always remains interesting. Overall the album drives forward with immense speed and anger, yet songs usually contain some areas of relief, either in a slower drum tempo or a more melodic and beautiful guitar section. Vocally, the album contains gurgled mid-level throat work with occasional low growls and high screeches.
The album gives me the visual of a cemetery—sometimes people are being buried, sometimes people are journeying to the afterlife, sometimes people are rising from the dead to wreak havoc. The song structure is constantly interesting throughout the album. It is not overly predictable and boring and not overly surprising and random but it always retains a smoothness throughout the album.
The album ends with the epically tragic song ‘The Sentinel in the Void’ which, in my opinion, transcends the rest of the album to offer a kind of climax for the album as a whole. Its feel is much sadder than the rest of the album—like an agonizing lament for something past or that such a great album is coming to an end. Personally, I would like to see more of their work follow this direction but their varied style works well.
“Sex Nex Quod Odium” is a great album that will not disappoint black metal fans.
