Aborym - Live in Studio

Hmmmm. - 69%

Peregrin, July 11th, 2007

These days Aborym are best known for having been "the next big thing" for a while, then having faded into the novelty act niche as industrial Black Metal - something that incidentally hasn't become as popular as I used to think it would.

Well, there's not much industrial influence to the two songs found here. Scratch that, there is ZERO industrial influence here that's not third hand through whatever new wave Aborym's sources of inspiration might have listened to. Instead, it sounds more like the slower parts of Celtic Frost's "Morbid Tales" (and like certain songs on that record, the ones here also progress towards some sort of climax) with some tremolo picking added for taste that calls both early Kreator and Darkthrone to mind.

The vocals generally sound more like a guttural death growl than the raspy shrieks and snarls you usually associate with black metal, though occasionally a shouted clean vocal appears only to be drowned almost completely by other instruments.

Speaking of the production, which is just as horrible as expected from a rehearsal tape, a strange thing about it is how the bass being higher in the mix than the guitars actually works in the music's favour, the bass' tuning lending a quite ominous touch.

There's also a "what the hell?" moment around 02:06 in "The Black Deicide", where it appears they've inserted a sample of birdsong (!) in the background. That's really the only extraordinary thing about this demo. It's no failure really, but definitely of most interest to Aborym completists.
