Wonderful ambience starts off the journey this Greek trio have set forth for us. I'm always impressed when bands utilize ambience in an intro.
The production is not all that stellar, but doesn't make it impossible to hear the impressive guitar work. The vocal style is typical to raw black metal, nothing impressive. For a self released demo, I'm not all that disappointed by the drumming. It's certainly not all too audible throughout the music, but the beat of the music isn't hard to hear.
Production quality set aside, this reminds me a lot of Russian black metal in terms of the loud guitar, quiet drum mix, with harsh yet audible vocals. Most of the words the vocalist are screaming I can hear, surprisingly. This is different, and better than most black metal vocalists, who leave you hearing no words at all, even if they have a relatively quality production.
From song to song, their sound isn't too varied. It is safe to say that this release was meant to express a fair deal of power, also reminiscent of Norwegian black metal.
By the fourth track, the release has slowed down a bit. I am still quite impressed with the quality of this production, the vocalist is still grim but audible. The guitar is also very solemn, somewhat melodic. This reminds me somewhat of Abyssic Hate's style of slow, depressive black metal. However, the sound is clearly more hateful and less depressive. Near the end of this fourth track, the guitar part picks up considerably, a variation I like. There is a small solo before the vocalist comes back in. The track ends with more unique guitar transitions between some of the thematic parts of the song. It ends very well, and fades out to the next track. The fifth track starts rather quietly, with some acoustic guitar and some bass. As the base picks up, the vocalist and electric guitars come in. The drums also become more audible, and the fierce beat sets the way for the rest of the song.
I was rather taken back, at first listen, the first few tracks don't vary too much, but by the fifth track, they have incorporated several different influences within black metal. I will also admit the vocalist is rather clear and concise with his growls and screams. Within the sixth track, the drums have some more variety than in the previous tracks. Throughout this demo, there's been a constant sound the band has aimed for, but they have showed a fair bit of transition and change over the release thus far. There's also a fair bit of melody within the guitar part in the seventh track, which obviously is not something that is very abundant throughout the rest of the tracks.
And, a beautiful finish to add. More ambience, but this time, in the eighth and final track, guitar! What a pleasant way to end this release. Dark, foreboding ambience with guitar. This is actually my favorite track of the whole release. As for a work in itself, this release is great. They have several different influences in their music, and this is more than I expected for just another Greek black metal band. I am glad this band has put out a newer EP with better production. The ending few seconds were truly dark, as the guitar slowly comes to a close and fades out, ominous sounding winds come in. I love the places this band took this music within right under a half hour, I really can't wait for this band to come out with a full length.
