Sargeantdeath99, February 13th, 2020
Written based on this version: 2007, CD, Roadrunner Records

Fire Up the Blades is the third studio album by Canadian heavy metal band 3 Inches of Blood. 3 Inches of Bloods lineup consists of Cam Pipes (Vocals), Jamie Hooper (Vocals), Justin Hagberg (Guitars), Shane Clark (Guitars), Nick Cates (Bass) and Alexi Rodriguez (Drums). Fire Up the Blades was produced by former Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison. The album was released on June 26th 2007 by Roadrunner Records and is the band's final release on that label.

3 Inches of Blood have crafted a close to perfect follow up album to highly successful Advance and Vanquish. Fire Up the Blades has everything a person could look for in a heavy metal album. Cams Rob Halford like voice mixed with Jamie's melodic screams create a perfect harmony. On top of the vocals you have the masterful work of Justin Hagberg and Shane Clark filling your ears with slick solos and heavy riffs. Alexi Rodriguez tops it all off with his fast-paced drumming and manages to set the tone for the entire album.

As it is with Advance and Vanquish it is damn near impossible to choose a favorite track. There are however a few certain tracks that make you feel a certain way. Whether it is the great lyrics or superb instruments, you cannot deny this album was wonderfully written and allow 3 Inches of Blood to make you feel like you're witnessing the fall of man or setting of on an epic adventure. If you are a fan of The Elder Scrolls, Dungeons and Dragons, or any other fantasy related stories you will love this album.

Forrest King is a song that snares you right from the start with a quick scream and immediately followed up with blistering guitar work. However the true backbone of the track is the drumming, it also managed to blend perfectly with Cams high tempo vocals.

However with The Hydras Teeth uses Jamies strong screams along side Cams menacing high pitched vocals perfectly. They create something truly spectacular with standout drumming, and as with any 3 Inches Of Blood work the guitars are perfect as always.

Other standout tracks off the album include Trial of Champions, a song about a gladiator fighting for his freedom. And God of The Cold White Silence, a song that references Ithaqua, a Great Old One in the Cthulhu Mythos of H. P. Lovecraft.

In conclusion to what was said above, Fire Up the Blades is the perfect successor to the second studio album Advance and Vanquish. The bar was set impossibly high but the boys in 3 Inches Of Blood managed to meet it head on and with with full force, the album was described as a darker and tighter album by guitarist Justin Hagberg. This album is a must own for any metal fan, not just a 3 Inches of Blood fan.
