Ævangelist - Omen ex Simulacra

Hell's Synthesis - 99%

meshuggahbrewer, October 8th, 2014
Written based on this version: 2013, CD, Debemur Morti Productions (Digipak)

This band has rapidly taken over all of my free music listening time. From the first listen of their debut "De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis", I realized I I had stumbled upon a noise I had never heard before. While the band seems extremely difficult and unapproachable at first listen; upon subsequent music sessions they become quite mesmerizing and hard to stop listening to.

Omen ex Simulacra begins with the haunting intro of "Veils". The song begins with the haunting tortured sound of hell itself it seems before evolving into an atmospheric crushing death/black/horror metal song that sets a dark standard I have only heard approached by fellow extreme metalists Abyssal. The next track " Mirrors of Eden" serves to continue the dark decent that this album will take you down into. The excellent drum tracking, dissonant vocals, and distorted guitar only serve as a premonition that there's much more to come.

The album really begins to draw from the death metal side once the track "Hell Synthesis" begins. The brutal, nearly indistinguishable gutturals from Ascaris are pushed to the fore front as the background showcases extreme dexterity and near-inhuman speed on the drum set. I honestly thought this was recorded with a drum machine until I read that Matron Thorn had in fact played the track. If you can continue, the next track "The Devoured Aeons Of Stygian Eternity" begins in straight blast mode. Whereas previous tracks have shifted from a more atmospheric black/doom perspective; this track does the polar opposite, but Aevangelist never sticks to any real guidelines anyway. After several minutes of straight plummeting, the tracks begins to shift back into the downward spiral of blackness started in the first tracks. The album continues on until the epic "Abysscape" completes the journey into this terrifying atmospheric album. This epic 12 minute track is within seconds of being the exact same length as the first rack. Coincidence? I think not. The drums start with a rapid fire decent into the bottom of this abyssal album. It continues to build and build and once the vocals come in, the background haunting noises and screams are in full effect. The track twists and turns through various speed patterns until the haunting finale loops the listener back to the the beginning, if another immediate listen is physically possible

I feel as though Aevangelist have taken a Impetuous Ritual, Abyssal, Mitochondrion, and added in a heavy dose of pure evil. There is no Portal-esque "random noise" to be found here. If you truly take the time..turn off all distractions, close your eyes and listen to Aevangelist...not only will your dreams be intense but you will experience a new highly creative level (or depth) of metal I've not previously come across. This band only becomes more terrifying as they progress and I'm very happy that they decided to share their horrific vision with all of us. I rate this highly based on the uniqueness of sound, and continued evolution of production. Is it the greatest thing ever in metal? No. But is it highly imaginative and manages to be more terrifying and heavy than the loudest, "slamtastic", brutal death band you've ever heard? Yes! A resounding yes. I imagine it could be easy to get stuck in the same sounding "terror" music, but with this album Aevangelist continue to preach their dark gospel without adhering to any guidelines. Bear witness.
