Some time ago I was searching for some black-metal or death-metal music like Gorguts, Mitochondrion or Portal . "De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis" by Ævangelist was recomended to listen to. Yeah! It is murky, noisy, disharmonic, but interesting music. So it was necessary to try another one Ævangelist's LP. And the second was this one.
After the short intro "Divination" the recording runs into "Æon Death Knell" and a world of twisting, off-kilter rhythms, fractured growls, and distorted riffs that detached from other stuff. There are no accessible hooks (however "Serpentine As Lustful Nightmare" is catchy and memorable from the first time). It seems like this music was not created for people and it makes feel headache somebody who is not ready for such sonic assult. I am not a musician, but I could assume that it have no basis in conventional musical theory!!! This is an impression that such music can make (for majority).
The first good thing I can say is about atmosphere. Yeah! It is oppressive, it is full of despair and horror. But the main point, I think, is something that I could name as "other-worldliness". A lot of bands try to create the atmosphere of sheer madness from the underworld/non-dimentional universe/Lovecraftian fiction. A lot of bands try to portray the summoning of demons and other creatures from beyond. And Ævangelist could achieve it on this album and did it with such conviction. And yet, there is something addictive about it. As much as the album wants you to run away from world it created, there’s also something about it that will linger in the mind. Matricide in the Temple of Omega makes get back again and again to understand these mysteries in musical form or repeat this junkie bad trip.
Another thing that I really like is wholeness. There is no point trying to discuss individual songs. They flow into one another. It seems that the album is designed as a whole body of work, not broken up into convenient sections. That whole is one discordant, difficult piece of music.
And of course, I like the way how the album is composed and produced. As it is mentioned above I am not a musician and it is difficult to me to use/find correct terms to describe things. But let me try. Yeah! When you first time listen to the music it seems to be chaotic cacophony. The similar impression could make such opuses as Gorguts's "Obscura" or "Putrefaction in Progress" by Last Days of Humanity. Yes. But next times you can find out something like well constructed machine of mental terrorism that consists of head-spinning riffs, dissonant and maniacal gitar work, noises, growls and screams from the void/other side, crushing and nihilistic brutality at some moments and melancholic and contemplative indifference at some moments too. Can you imagine a tornado with furious and dissonant center in perpetual high gear spiraling around it? It is like a very complex system where it is difficult to find relations between it's parts. Also there are moments of melodies. These melodies are not memorable, they are dissonant and twisted. Personally I find all this beatiful in it's own way.
Finally. This albums stands out from typical black/death metal. My own opinion is that "Matricide in the Temple of Omega" is one of the most interesting albums of 2010's. I'am looking forward for new music by Ævangelist and Matron Thorn.
