Ævangelist's first (out of three!) release for this year was the 14 minute piece entitled Abstract Catharsis. The band has been prolific since its formation however their style is changing slowly. In Abstract Catharsis they do what they know best: they deliver a great mix of dissonance and consonance as well as a combination of shrieks and frantic lamentations vocal-wise. Both Matron Thorn and Ascaris show that they have things to offer but they do not digress from their past works.
As a whole, this EP is easily listenable and not to hard to digest but I'm not sure if that's a good thing. If anything, I like this a lot more than Dream an Evil Dream but not Enthrall to the Void of Bliss. The guitars weave eerie lines upon each other while standing on a wretched rhythm section combined of palm muted power chords, heavy bass and either blasting or grooving drum patterns. Ascaris vocals are relatively high in the mix and I enjoy them a lot. However, once again there's nothing new brought to the table and that is Ævangelist's and every experimental band's curse. When they find their style they stick to it for a very long time.
Apart from all these facts though, the EP is working for me as it should work for everyone else. Ævangelist are at the threshold of their breakthrough. The upcoming year is going to be as full of releases as this one and I'm pretty sure that they will surpass everything they have done until now. Abstract Catharsis is a solid EP and that, for me at least, is enough.
