Founded by Greta Tate in 1980 (originally as Central Station Records & Tapes, the name of the record store she worked at and base of operations for the label). Besides releasing and distributing music, Metal for Melbourne (which eventually became the name of the record store) organized and put on live shows for metal bands from 1981-1986. In February 2017, a 30th Anniversary show (since M.F.M.'s last one, in 1986) took place, and featured performances by Taramis, Persecution, Tyrus, Hobbs Angel of Death, Bengal Tigers, as well as other veteran Melbourne-area bands.
