Cogumelo was first established as a rock store in 1980 by Patti Creusa Pereira De Faria and her husband João Eduardo De Faria. In 1985 they founded Cogumelo Records, with the production of the split LP (one side for each band) featuring Overdose and Sepultura. The album, Sepultura - Bestial Devastation and Overdose - Século XX was recorded at JG Studios, using only 8 tracks. Each side of the split LP spawned different CD releases.
In 1986, Cogumelo decided to release Sepultura’s first full length LP, Morbid Visions, recorded using 16 tracks at Vice-Versa Studio, São Paulo. In the same year the label produced the compilation Warfare Noise I, including the bands Sarcófago, Chakal, Holocausto and Mutilator. By the end of the year, Sepultura was the label’s most popular band, being praised by many specialized magazines around the world. Another huge international success is the band Sarcófago, whose albums Rotting and The Laws of Scourge were released in Europe.
The label now hosts many bands of varying styles of hardcore/punk and metal.
Cogumelo's catalogue is distributed in the USA by Greyhaze Records.
