Description

Independent label/distro founded by Terry Shand, Cliff Dane and Jon Beecher as Castle Communications Ltd.

Starting out as a mid-price catalog reissue specialist, the company grew into the largest European owner of repertoire outside the major record companies. In the 1980s, it was notable for releasing many heavy metal compilations albums under the series name Metal Killers. Interest in these licensed releases led them to form their own heavy metal imprint called Raw Power, which signed and promoted new rock acts rather than just license older product from other more established labels.

The company expanded rapidly between 1983 and 1986 by launching several record labels including Blatant, Cirrus, Castle Music, The Collector Series, Dojo Records, Kasino, Kastle Killers, Raw Power and Showcase, etc., which encompassed a wide range of musical styles with an emphasis initially on repackaging existing performances rather than producing new material.

In 1985, the company re-registered as a Public Limited Company - Castle Communications PLC.

In 1988, it acquired Hendring Ltd., a music video company, and Independent Video Services Ltd., a video sales and distribution company (renamed to Castle Home Video Ltd.). It also launched Knight Records Ltd. In July of that year, it also acquired Masterpiece Music Productions Ltd. and Target International Pictures Ltd., a film distributor and sales agent.

On Sept. 8, 1994, the whole share capital of Castle Communications PLC was acquired by AEC Holdings (UK) Ltd., a subsidiary of American music distributor Alliance Entertainment Corporation.

On Nov. 20, 1998, Castle Communications PLC became de-registered as a Public Limited Company and was renamed Castle Music Ltd.. By 1999/2000, the Castle Communications label imprint ceased to be used and was replaced by Castle Music as it was absorbed into Sanctuary Records Group Ltd.
