I've recorded riffs (tried both mono and stereo; same problem occurs) with both Audacity and Reaper, and with both programs part of the audio will be very loud for around 10 seconds then decrease drastically in volume.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

If you could upload some examples of this problem, it would probably make it more likely that somebody could help.

I had the same problem with Audacity, like 5 seconds of normal sound, then it turned into some weird noise.

My solution:
Go to "settings" -> "audi e/a" -> select your soundcard as recording device.
If you're recording through a microphone, check its recording volume using your audio panel. If the microphone's settings are too sensitive (meaning the recorded sound gets too loud), Audacity might decrese the volume automatically.

This solved my problem.

Probably because they are try before you buy versions.

Doesn't matter; I've never had the problem in the past.
