Most bands mentioned here are very close to Black Metal which I'll probably give a miss...

The Swedish band Wulfgar should be right up your alley. Also Runic if you haven't already heard of them

Ebay it or get it off soulseek from me and then buy it later.

I'm not quite sure if i have to ask it here on in the death metal thread but i'm looking for melodic death metal bands with some, but not too much (note! don't recommand me Suidakra'') folkish influences. Think of Wintersun and early In flames.

edit: Don't mind production and lyrics must be in english, thanks in advance!

Can I have something that will help me get into the folk/viking metal genre? I've been trying to listen to it for a while, but I want something that can get me into the genre easier.

You could name some of your favourite genres/bands first so that people can suggest something that could be more to your liking. You know, there is quite a bit of variation between the bands that get lumped into the folk/viking genre. ;)

If you're looking for something accessible, I would recommend Turisas "The Varangian Way." I'm not a fan of their other album, but this one is quite solid and I recommend it to friends of mine who are curious about the genre.

Is their any thrash bands that include anything remotely folk like, as in Melodies or even Folk instruments?

Panychida is kind of thrashy (I think... I'm no expert on thrash), with bagpipes and flute and such.

[Edit: Also I might recommend Dub Buk and Rodosvet. They both play a kind of black/thrash metal (although Dub Buk's first few releases are more symphonic black metal) with a small amount of folk. They are both quality bands, but they're also NS-related. Lyrics are in Ukrainian and Russian, respectively.]

Okay, so a website I download stuff (legally) from now has some of manegarm's stuff up, eveything from Nordstjarnans Tildsalder to Vredens Tid. Which one should I go with first?

their best folk/viking album is their latest which is pretty easy to find. But if you cant/to lazy I'd probably say Dodsfard over Vredens Tid. Their best pagan BM cd is easily their debut. They are one of the best viking bands ever, if you havent checked out Menhir do that next.

Does anyone here have any recommendation for good "celtic metal", meaning metal music with irish folk music influence?

I'm looking for something like the celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys, but metal. I know a number of bands that sound like this but I have a few problems with them.

Eluveitie is too screamy and Cruachan is too cheesy/dopey for my taste. Primordial would have been fine, but the celtic influence sounds too thin.

Thoughts?

Waylander is an amazing Celtic folk/metal band but it has a lot of black metal influence as well, not sure if that would be anything close similar to Dropkick Murphys but essential to Celtic metal nonetheless.

Also you should check out Heol Telwen. They mix celtic metal and black metal, really nice band.

You could try Aes Dana, celtic/black metal, not too screamy.

I'm looking for folk metal in the vein of Storm (Nor), Isengard (Nor) and Otyg (Swe), basically mid-paced, riff-based folk metal with clean vocals. Anyone know any such bands?

I'm looking for something more towards the ambient side of things similar to Drudkh and Enslaved's Bellow the lights.

Raventale from Ukraine is probably a good bet. They play very atmospheric ambient black metal, and are quite similar to Drudkh. I think they have a new album coming out soon too.

Heidevolk and Metsatoll. Odroerir is one of my favorites, but I wouldn't call their music riff-based. Beautiful vocal harmonies on "Gotterlieder," though.

Perhaps you would also like Grimm, although there are occasional shrieky vocals. When the vocalist isn't shrieking, it sounds quite like Storm to my ears.

Holy shit! Thanks!!! Metsatöll and Grimm really hit the spot!

Heidevolk are really good too. I've heard of them before, but never properly checked them out.

As someone who loves all their albums, and by all I mean everything from Borknagar to Origin, I think it all depends on what genres of metal you like or dislike.

If you can accept something thats not entirely "methuullll" then I suggest you start with either Epic or Empiricism. And after those two move on to either Quintessence or The Olden Domain, depending on whether you like their black metal bits or their progressive bits.

I say you should start with the first and move to the second, then maybe move to Quintessence and don't bother with the others. But if you like (whiny, like any other) progressive metal, then check out what the guy above said first. :P

You should check into Wyrd's Heathen and Huldrafolk. I think you should also check out Walknut, and maybe Marblebog's Forestheart.

I love all three bands you just kinda blasted there, but you should take this advice anyway. Glittertind. Punky viking/folk

Try the Finnish band Ikuinen Kaamos. I adore them, and I always thought it'd be perfect for fans of Enslaved and Borknagar, and Opeth for that matter.

Okay, another question for you all-which Thyrfing album to get first? Everyone seems to like vannsinesvisor the most, but I've heard samples from urkraft that seem better-in that they're more upbeat and folk-influenced, which I actually like more. Suggestions?

I thought Vannsinesvisor was really uneven. Some parts I thought were brilliant and others I thought were fucking terrible. Some of it just sounds way too forced. I actually think their debut is their best album, although I'm not a big fan of them overall.

The last time I heard Metsatoll live (end of June) they sounded even more riff-oriented than before; it was more like folk-thrash.

The first three Thyrfing albums (self-titled, Valdr Galga, and Urkraft) are more "upbeat" Viking metal stuff. I prefer Urkraft out of the three of them. The first album is good except for the sound quality, and Valdr Galga is also a solid choice (except for the annoying porno sample in "A Moment In Valhalla").

Yeah, I'm noticing that right now. Some good stuff, but it doesn't really help that the vocals drown out the keyboards/folky stuff far too often.

Urkraft is fucking amazing though. Guess I'll get Valdr Galga next.

It seemed to me that the English-language songs on Vansinnesvisor were awful (especially "The Voyager," perhaps the worst Thyrfing song ever), while most of the Swedish-language songs were good. That's why I was glad when they did all Swedish-language songs on Farsotstider.

Interestingly enough, I was jamming out to that song when I read that. I found the last two tracks on vann. to be the weakest, personally.

Vansinnesvisor was awesome, and as a swede I hate most harsh vocals in swedish. It usually sounds pretentious and bad, and the lyrics themselves tend to suck. Månegarm has done some REALLY atrocious stuff in particular if you can understand what they're singing (cheesy as hell).

Thyrfing, the last Armagedda album and Mörk Gryning are axceptions though.

Hoping for the upcoming one to sound just as good as Farsotstider... :headbang:
