It has been mentioned above, but anyway check out Beyond Twilight.

Regarding the earlier discussion regarding what defines prog metal; I'm pretty sure that it just means the music has a tendency to avoid pop music song structuring, some experimentalism and a high degree of musical profeciency.

You could try Ephel Duath's music. If you are into jazz-driven black metal, you might want to check this out.

Everyone should listen to Outworld, absolutely no exceptions. Trust me. Buy their debut and worship Cooley and pals.

Also, check out Spiral Architect. Freaky Norsk prog.

Hmm, I might ask a question here myself.

Basically, I've always hated prog metal, it's just turned me off whenever I'd heard it. With my recent interest in power metal, I'm looking for some "gateway" bands that could introduce me to the genre. I know people seem to mention a number of bands all the time, but even these "popular" bands in the genre often have a huge amount of releases, and the wrong choice could put me off forever! I'm willing to give the genre a try though, so here we go...

Looking for some prog metal with a fair leaning towards power metal (I'm talking Black Majesty style power metal here) and not to much emphasis on the whole "progressive" stuff, I'm a newbie to it after all. Good, strong vocals are a plus (no harsh vocals please, as I said I'm leaning towards to pm styled bands) and a nice flow in the songs, no Opeth-style stop-stop stuff.

That's about as detailed as I can make my description unfortunately, I just have no knowledge of the genre.

Not really familiar with Black Majesty. Symphony X have a largely power metal sound; I'd start with The Divine Wings of Tragedy. If you like them, check out Shadow Gallery next, starting with Tyranny.

In Mourning, maybe? They're closer to Opeth than to Riverside or Dark Suns, though they're certainly dark and melancholic (and their songs are more concise than most of Opeth's material).

Every time I see a power/prog metal request, I always think of Angel Dust lately and they always fit, so Bezerko, check out this fucking band. :p

And Fates Warning - Arch era - is up your alley, as Black Majesty took some cues from them in the songwriting department. If you like them, try Crimson Glory and Manilla Road too.

And it is a bit of a stretch, but Communic and Scariot might be up your alley.

Nobody mentioned one of the alltime greatest Psychotic Waltz?!
Their first (A Social Grace) is so dark, yet beautiful and will remain the single most inspirational album and hasn't been topped by any progresive bands in my book. When it came out years ago, it just blew the shit out of me! I'm sad to see they broke up, eventhough Buddy Lackey remained playing progresive metal in Dead Soul Tribe (under his new monicker Devon Graves for some silly reason...).
To wrap it up, Psychotic Waltz! And almost anything related to Buddy Lackey (but only almost, cuz I don't really like the new DST album)!

Lately I've really gotten into Fates Warning. I just picked up No Exit, finally. Also, I've been into Dream Theater for a while.

Anything along those two lines would be great.

Further, I'm a huge Rush fan (I know, I know, not too metal anymore) and I really dig Tiles. Anything in that vein would be great.

Has anyone else here listened to Acid Rain (from Spain or Portugal I believe)? Simply incredible album...

Check out those.. most of them are instrumental though.

Cynic - Focus
Gordian Knot (all instrumental, formed by members of Cynic)
Liquid Tension Experiment (also instrumental.. formed by members of DT.. basically DT without vocals)
Pain of Salvation - Entropia (first album has some jazzy moments)
Bozzio Levin & Stevens

The majority of prog metal bands do not rip off Dream Theater, in fact.

That common notion is ridiculous.

Yes. YES.
It's not a metal band, but the bass, the electric guitar and the drums are as tough as they could be in the seventies.
Yes is a tough band, they play tensed music, and their major records ( you just have to own one : "Yesssongs", the triple live album ) contain 100% of what progressive groups - including metal - do today.
Don't hesitate. Trust the absolute classic of progressive music. Your soul will fly higher, and your musical knowledge will get sharper and sharper.

If it's not a metal band then why did you post it in the "Progressive METAL help thread".

Please use your brain.

Off Topic: Has Bonzo been banned yet?

Reccomendation Request:

Are there any Progressive metal bands that tend to use instruments that aren't considered "metal" a LOT? Like violins, organs, flutes, and the like. I've heard some prog bands that use these instruments in their songs, but I'm looking for bands that use unorthodox musical instruments to a very large extent in their music. Not sure if any progressive band like this exists, but I'm interested in hearing how such music would sound...

What a funny behaviour. Even if I hated you - I don't -, I wouldn't ask the forum to ban you. Why is that your first, instinctive, immediate reaction ? Are you Joe DiMaio ?
