Well, it has become a facet of modern times to 'blog'. On cooking, photography, sex, literatur, there is hardly if none topic spared out in the blogger scene. What is praised as a new form of communication and the fact that 'normal' people rise from the status of an unimportant (and perhaps also unattractive) person to a well-known and often read source of internet journalism, is perhaps the best aspect that has become of this world-wide connecting medium. A controll mechanism for people by people in a globalized world.

In contrast to this is the fear of the government, especially the German one is running wild on this issue, perhaps due to the fact that some of our politicians do not even know what a browser is, that the internet is merely a hard to control new communication technology that needs not only to be controlled, but also to be censored. Bloggers are the first in line when it comes to censorship; remember Burma for instance... How to control the spread of music, literature etc. when it is not possible to analyze the internet traffic and to prevent such this illegal behaviour from happening.

Yet it does not stop here: Currently we have some discussion going on in Germany on how to make the internet safe for children. Sex, violence, terroristic propaganda etc. pp. are spread there on countless websites without they ever been controlled by a governmental institution and youngsters may be confronted by this 'inadequate' information without possessing the ability to protect themselves from it.

Terrorists might use the internet as a recruiting base and use tools that would enable they to bypass any control mechanism by the secret service, whereas the time until the plot is complete and the danger at hand might be nearly nil.

This is what the media tells us, this is what we have to face...

With everything good I'm sure there is a security risk.
I doubt most people would be recruited into, for example: Al-qaida or something fringe end like that.
The internet is a place for learning, and I'm quite sure if there was no internet... I'd be a CNN drone. It really helped the evolution of my mind.

The Internet should NOT be safe for children because the Internet is NOT for children. All these new cybercafe generations have seriously rotten brains, do stupid shit and usually upload it to YouTube, these kids make me sick.
Internet is a great place for those with enough brains to know what's good, what's bad and what's stupid. Sadly kids are too young and don't have enough brains for that (it's the age, we've all been through that) but that doesn't stop them to come into the internet and become idiotic zombies, much like what happened with television in the 90's. But parents, just like always, prefer to blame other people before trying to be more responsible.

Gah.

About the Terrorist thing........ I don't think that's exactly true. Sounds like scaremongering to me.

Whether the Internet is a security issue or not all depends on what you do on it. If you decide to browse for stitching tips, there isn't likely to be any issues at all. If you go onto a child pornography site, then expect consequences.

I send money online all the time to companies that look reputable. In that respect, there always is a personal information issue that I regularly turn a blind eye to, thinking "it won't happen to me". So far, it hasn't. I hope that continues, too. :)

I'm not sure if I answered your question properly, but I hope I have at least touched on the subject enough.

The internet is great at dispensing information of all kinds to anyone interested. This could be bad, for the reasons above, but it could also, eventually, lead to less ignorant generations in the future. Imagine how many people have changed their minds about a particular topic through the internet's ability to allow one to easily access facts and information.

This is very true, I used to think coprophagia and bestiality were the very soul of the Devil!

Niiiice. Nice.

Anyway, I can see where the usage of the internet can lead to security risks, however it's just a fact of life these days. I think the benefits outweigh the detriments, though. I would expect the governments to be more up to date on security issues than most other organizations, even though infiltrations can still occur.

Hah! While it's a reasonable demand, don't expect it. It turns out that those (on paper) responsible for the security are often knowledgeable enough (though I met exceptions) but they don't always get their will through. And as long as politicians and high ranking officials choose to use passwords like the names of their children, 1234 or something similar they won't succeed.

And even when they get their will through, that's not enough. I reckon that more than half of the breaches to FBI:s systems originate at local offices where the IT staff also has more pressing responsibilities and less knowledge than the central units.

Internet is a security risk for everyone's using it, plain and simple. Often the users/employees are the biggest risks, but there are risks beyond that. Quite surprising that it resembles life that much, isn't it?

hahahaha nothing but truth, it would be better if they take the first stupid weirdo that passes infront of them to make him write the password and then shoot him... the problem would be if the word he chooses is "taco" or something like that, it could be a problem ha.

well as always, the first use the humans find to all the new technologies are those that work for the war, and being the internet a technology that is all around the world... well i think it was suppose to hapen ._.

The internet will be a much better place for our children when Scientology no longer exists on it.
