I believe a recommendation thread sticky that covers the main genres of metal covered with a little bit of detail would help stop the creation of countless stupid "Recommend (XXXX Genre) bands" threads.
This thread could be done like the on they have on Ultimate-guitar.com

I really do wish that that awful list would stop being recommended - it really is an embarassment.

It's better than nothing, but as all such lists it certainly has its shortcomings. More essential Type O Negative albums than Judas Priest albums? And two Witchfinder General albums and only Epicus... from Candlemass? But somehow the thrash list isn't too bad.

Not to mention in the black metal list, three albums by Xasthur and three by Suidakra (!) and only two by Mayhem...oh, and Mercyful Fate's 'In the Shadows' of course.

And Wehrwolve in the death metal list.

Recommendations here and there... People have gotten so fucking lazy! Back 7-8 years ago, when I was new to the whole extreme metal scene, I altavista-ed around and found bands out on my own. That's how you find your own taste, not by being tricked into believing every recommendation is 100 % accurate. Sure it's okay to ask around a bit, but I personally think recommendations fuck up the whole point about "finding" new bands.

They also forgot a large number of genres. Some of them more specific...

They forgot:

Stoner Metal
Groove Metal
Metalcore/Sludge/Crossover/Post-Metal - Not all Metalcore is bad, while the rest represent three different sort of hardcore+metal fusions.
Operattic/Symphonic Metal (Not just Symphonic Power Metal like Nightwish, but bands like Therion and Aesma Daeva)
Neoclassical/Shred Metal
Progressive/Technical/Fusion Metal

Not to mention the gross misrepresentation of a few bands (Evergrey =/= Gothic Metal)

But anyway, a sticky thread of recommendations for every single genre of metal, as well as recommended avoidances of every genre (I.E. Melodic Death Metal - Jester Race and Colony by In Flames = Good; Come Clarity, STYE, Reroute to Remain = Bad)

Not just the major genres, the minor subgenres as well. I even saw a thread for Shoegaze Metal...

What would be more interesting is a recommendation thread where posters can post rare or odd albums they have, and give it a quick introduction; a sort of a mini-review if you will - Nothing fancy.

Other forum users can learn about odd/rare music that way and possibly encourage some interesting discussions. It would certainly be more interesting, not to mention functional, than “I Need Thrash!" thread #324.

It would also be more in line with the mission of this site as a whole.

Why not make a recommendation thread sub-forum.

Because nobody would post in it. Having rec threads in Metal Discussion means that people actually answer them.

Still, not a bad idea.
