What makes it for me is that his riffs were so elaborate and articulately played. His ear for guitar tone and ability to bring out the little small but important stylings makes listening to albums like The Book endlessly entertaining. The way he plays with the treble and bass response in Why? is so much fun to listen to. He makes it all sound dead easy, too.

He also had an ear for very evocative melodies. You know it's powerful when the music triggers a deep feeling of nostalgia the first time listening. Those chords and melodies in The Message of the Time, The Wall - just incredible. And although some of those more evil sounding parts went knee-deep in cheese, especially on Black Seal, songs like Salamandra are actually fucking haunting.

The pairing with Big Boss was also perfect for those albums. I guess not everyone likes fucking art.

It's cheesy in a good way like old horror movies, where they were totally serious in intent and the cheese is just from the general over-the-top-ness, rather than any actual humor. A good horror movie is usually cheesy too but also has that sense of real dread and atmosphere.

The Book is just remarkable for how many slower sections there are and it still works. It shouldn't work so well. I remember I didn't get it when I was younger, but now it sounds very unique and arresting for the pure lack of convention and cliche in that album. It's like one long song in a way, flowing very well.

Defenders of the Faith rules throughout, but A-side is clearly better than B. 80's Priest albums are not perfect, but still very enjoyable. I find myself listening mostly Turbo and Ram it Down these days. And the better tracks from Point of Entry.

It’s okay, you’ve always had shit taste. No one can begrudge you for that.

Just got a scam e-mail that had me thinking of Black Mirror. At least this one is more interesting than the dozen "secret shopper" e-mails I get a month but boy is this a terrible way to get people pulling Bitcoin out of its millionth slump.

Douchebag wrote:
five_nails, you don't know me and you're thinking why you received this e mail, right?

Well, I actually placed a malware on the porn website and guess what, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching the video, your web browser acted as a RDP (Remote Desktop) and a keylogger which provided me access to your display screen and webcam. Right after that, my software gathered all your contacts from your Messenger, Facebook account, and email account.

What exactly did I do?

I made a split-screen video. First part recorded the video you were viewing (you've got a fine taste haha), and next part recorded your webcam (Yep! It's you doing nasty things!).

What should you do?

Well, I believe, $1200 is a fair price for our little secret. You'll make the payment via Bitcoin to the below address (if you don't know this, search "how to buy bitcoin" in Google).

BTC Address: 18AVxMK2KHimbrTJVEeUYM3LxLfD9RoR3o
(It is cAsE sensitive, so copy and paste it)

Important:

You have 24 hours in order to make the payment. (I have an unique pixel within this email message, and right now I know that you have read this email). If I don't get the payment, I will send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so forth. Nonetheless, if I do get paid (after payment, send an email to [email protected]), I will erase the video immidiately. If you want evidence, reply with "Yes!" and I will send your video recording to your 5 friends. This is a non-negotiable offer, so don't waste my time and yours by replying to this email.

Man, it's been so long since I've last listened to Hellwitch's Syzygial Miscreancy, but I'm doing so right now. What a cool band, they really were onto something. It'd be nice to know whether Defleshed were influenced/inspired by Hellwitch at any point. Seems not too far-fetched...

I took a nasty spill into a fire pit last weekend, after trying to chase a rogue frisbee and not paying attention to my surroundings. Thankfully, it was only coals and not a roaring flame, and that my buddy was lightning fast in pulling me off of the fucking thing. Got a pretty gnarly second degree burn on my left arm, but hey, it could've been a helluva lot worse. Kind of a shitty end to a great weekend, but oh well, nothing can be done now!

I made the tortoise a summer house outside by using an old terrarium I found for four euros. I showed a pic of it sun-tanning and eating lettuce in there to a six-year old niece of the Lady. The following discussion took place:

She: "What if the tortoise escapes?"
Me: "How would it escape?"
She: "Very slowly."

I saw Ozzy Osbourne live last night, and he still has energies of a 12 year old on stage. I got some super cool CDs as well, but Ozzy was definitely the highlight of the night. I lost my voice and the pits were endless

Glad you saw him with some energy. He looked and sounded like a propped up corpse when I saw that last Sabbath tour.

People have been fooled by the Nigerian Prince scams, so that's really no surprise. People aren't very rational when it comes to fear triggers like this, so they don't put much thought into it. I recall seeing one of those small claims courts disputes on TV a few years ago--I don't remember what they were complaining about--but this one woman noted that she had expected money to come in that never arrived--from an email of someone who said she won a contest in the UK or some shit. So she totally fell for the scam and eventually ended up in court because she'd promised the money to someone else for a debt or some such shit.

For real. Stuff like that ends up on Dailymotion all the time so I'm not sure why he didn't just check there first. That's where I listen to King Crimson.

Sometimes I wonder if the reason I and a whole bunch of other people hate Slipknot so much is because of former MTV VJ Ian Robinson, and how most times when he opened his mouth you want to fracture his skull on a coffee table corner.

Professional, tight, reliable, and pretty fun if you know the songs even like to sing along. They're not the sort of band that gets big pits going or anything like that, but of course, your experience may vary depending on where you see them.

Seeing Amorphis in 2001 is still one of my most memorable gig experiences. I didn't even like the album they were touring for at that time. I don't even listen to them much except for the early 90s stuff and Elegy. The show wasn't even heavy. But it was the first gig on their tour and they just seemed to be in a great mood. They came across like a relaxed space-rock band and that was totally fine to me. Nothing like the other gig I caught from them either, where they played more heavy stuff, but it just wasn't as engrossing.

No idea what they're like nowadays though.

The Black Seal is probably my favourite of the post-Temple Root albums. That whole thing is very cohesive. Reading along with the lyrics helps with the immersive experience. The album is hypnotising and haunting and full of captivating riffs and vocal melodies from the inimitable Big Boss, who is only dorky if you find the idea of someone appearing to live their art "outside the world" to be somehow suspect.

That statement doesn't apply to me but I still think he's kind of dorky, tbh. And as I already said, The Black Seal is one of my favorite albums as well, so I have no reason to hate on the man. It's just a vibe I pick up on him.

Big Boss, as well as any old metal from Iron Maiden to Morbid Angel, is corny in the way that it's grandiose and over the top on purpose. It makes no pretense to be anything else. Fortunately the music is so fucking good that it makes the corniness awesome rather than just goofy.

I think we're mostly on the same page about this stuff, I just don't personally equate that sense of grandiosity you eloquently describe with corniness, I guess.

Daaaamn I just saw Lich King this night. They destroyed absolutely everything. And it is true, Brian Westbrook is a living meme. People were shouting his name instead of the band's name.

And huge shout-out to the openers Seax and Ravage. Excellent stuff for both of them and nice people. 100% for all of the three gigs.

Finished my first week as a dispatcher. Shift work will take some getting used to but the job itself isn't too bad and I have some helpful co-workers helping me along. Anyone else do shift work here? How do you cope with it?

Damn man I'm crying. KIT is literally my dream goal. That's the only festival I really want to do at least once (even if we all do that if I do it once I'd want to come back again and again).

I really enjoyed the time I went back in 2012, but these days the tickets sell out way too fucking early for me to commit. How the hell can I decide to spend hundreds on airfare without even knowing who the headliners are going to be?

Arrange it around a longer trip to Y'r'p, you legless bastard. I've been since 2016 but I managed a three year run between 2013 and then. It's looking very interesting next year, but we'll see how my holidays work out.
