Morgion is spectacular. Some of their members went off to the much-underrated Keen Of The Crow which may not have that "chainsaw" tone but their album and EP are both quite good.

You might also like The Drowning. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the chainsaw tone, but if I understand correctly, it may apply here...

I don't see a quote here, so I'm not sure what this post was in reference to, but I didn't think many people here knew Nevertanezra. What was this in response to?

It was a response to Ontsarguiz's request for more buzzing 'chainsaw'-sounding pedal effect like in Dwoom's debut. I didn't feel the need to quote his rec as that latest post of mine was actually following others about the same subject, but considering it eventually landed in first postion on a new page, I probably should have! :D

Sorry, I'm new here and didn't want to dig through all of the previous pages and just noticed the name without a quote. I figured it would be best to just jump in, traffic is a bit slow on my regular forum right now, so I'm out exploring other venues.

Huh, I didn't get that impression from NTNR, but it's cool to see them mentioned nonetheless.

The first thing that usually comes to mind for me of doom with that buzzing chainsaw guitar tone is Paramæcium's Exhumed of the Earth, the tone on that album is massive.

Yes, they are an interesting band. The amps they use don"t produce a sound as droning as many new projects outthere, but their guitar tone is quite grainy...

Well, maybe not the ultimate best example of all, I admit, but I was just listening to them when I wrote that post!

You're right, it's not droney and overbearing, but it doesn't sound squeaky clean either. I think it may have something to do with that kind of open sounding production that let's everything breathe, which is especially noticeable in the drums. You grabbed my favorite song from the album as an example too.

Are you familiar with the related act Avernus? Their Sadness demo is one of my favorite doom/death recordings.

I am not familiar with Avernus; at first, I confused the name with Avrigus, which I don't like. I'm now streaming their Sadness album on YT and it sound good indeed, like a rougher, darker Paramaecium.

I'm not fond of Kim Goss, but other than her lame vocals, that demo is fantastic. Rick's vocals are incredible, he's easily my favorite vocalist in the style. I really wish they would have stuck with it instead of going the gothic rock/metal route on their only full length. They recovered and made some good stuff later (especially The Slor Sessions), but almost none of it was officially released, so it never made any waves. It's one of those "what could have been" stories. American doom/death from the 90's is my favorite variant of the style, and Avernus are probably my favorite of the bunch.

Yeah, female vocals are always a hit or miss; more often than not you feel that's a prerequisite in many bands' mind, although, for what I am concerned, they usually are nothing more than an artificial foil to the male voice, and the music would often be better without them. They can even be a radical turn-off for me (like in Draconian, that I can't get into).

I don't think it's that so much as it is that Kim Goss is a terrible vocalist. I honestly don't know why anyone would ever hire her. I've heard from multiple sources that she was also a miserable person to be around, and have heard that she stole merch from bands she toured with.

I don't agree on Draconian, especially when Lisa was in the band. Her voice was every bit as important to their early albums as the male vocals, and she was a great singer. A lot of bands put them there as a placeholder or a gimmick (especially when they're shamelessly trying to increase their sales with sex appeal. I just don't get that vibe from Draconian, it sounded sincere in their case, and I feel like it fit the music well.

I've listened to the whole Sadness demo, and if I can't say I'm blown away by the female vocals, I don't find them terribly annoying either. I suppose the crappy production helps covering her flaws, but in the end, you got something that sounds more like an extra added texture than a bad female singer shamelessly flaunting her skills. I feel she's very conscious of her shortcomings and, well, they've managed to hide them as they could.

I want to hear a mix of funeral doom and stoner/doom. Clean vocals, fuzzy ultra slow riffs, and maybe some organs in the mix. Take this song from Windhand as an example of EXACTLY what I'm trying to find.

Do you know re133+? The vocals are very sparce, male ones, it's shamanic and unsettling. it also features an accordion!

Zaum is also very recommendable for a more oriental vibe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_njw-Aw-dc

not at all exaclty sounding like Windhand though...

Those aren't bad. I was actually familiar with Zaum already. They're cool.

This track by Church (who I freaking love) is a pretty good example of a balance between stoner/doom and funeral doom as well. The section that starts at six minutes in and lasts until 15:53 is pretty much exactly what I'm thinking of.

This one stretches the horizons a bit, but this track by Russian band Evoke Thy Lords is pretty damn cool too. I like the male grunts and sultry clean female singing alternating (her voice kind of reminds me of Dorthia Cottrell), and then the song goes from a grooving stoner/doom chug to a full-on funeral doom drag at 2:54. Would've probably liked it better with only clean vocals though.

Looking for something in the same vein as Triptykon and the Monotheist album from Celtic Frost. I love the massive, crushing guitar tone and the relentless dark atmosphere. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm super unfamiliar with doom anything other than a little bit of Candlemass and the aforementioned Triptykon/Celtic Frost stuff that is a bit doomy.

Check out 0xist (pronounced zero exist); they do claim the Monotheist legacy.

And Valborg, they have that typical German mechanical coldness: https://valborg.bandcamp.com/album/endstrand

I've been coming back to doom this easter. Listening to a lot of albums I hadn't listened to in years because of the new Mournful Congregation release. I was listening to Remembrance and really wondering, how can people recommend this crap? Silencing the Moments features incredibly awkward and boring songwriting and a rather goofy execution for most of the album. What is it that people see in this band?

On that note Mournful Congregation still crushes and I have to order the new album. Glad to see so much Ahab talk as well. Their last release left me a bit cold a few years ago but they're a good band. It's really just the first two that are amazing imo though. I remember when those were coming out and I was reading Moby Dick listening to Ahab. Aw good times!

I'm not really much of a fan of these styles of metal, but I was hoping I could get some recs on The Body. I've tried listening to some of their albums and didn't care for them, but I really like the collaborations they've done with Thou and especially the two Full Of Hell ones. The incorporation of weird electronic/industrial elements piques my interest. Can anyone recommend something in their main body (heh) of work that brings in those elements? Or is that more stuff they set aside when getting weird with other bands?

Thanks!

I'm pretty new to Doom Metal in general, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend me albums/bands that sound similar to Elder's Dead Roots Stirring.

Thanks in advance!

Warning and 40 Watt Sun have similar aesthetics I've found, though perhaps not quite as theatrical.

Also Apostle of Solitude's Last Sunrise. (If you can avoid looking at the cover art, definitely do so. Probably the worst album cover I have ever seen.)

I recommend this obscure gem from the Czec Republic, The Tower; these guys have perfectly nailed the Rev Bizz sound, dark, solemn and slightly gothic. Every song is really worth it:

I can't say I do. Doom:vs is based on melodic leads, it's a very melodic, atmo death doom project - it is no surprse that Saturnus' singer has joined the band as a matter of fact.
COF are almost a MB's tribute band, they have copied all their idiosyncrasies: the chugging riffs, the bleak, morose leads, the raspy growls, the ice-cold moods, it's all there. They really don't bring anything new to the table. Let's see if they'll manage to evolve a bit out of the shadow of their masters.

Hi Folks!
Need help finding more albums similar to Scald : Will of the Gods is Great Power. So far nothing I have heard comes even close to the atmosphere this manages to create.

I am aware of Ereb Altor, solstice, Atlantean Kodex, Doomsword

I've recently been hearing funeral doom metal bands such as Comatose Vigil, Tyranny, Shape of Despair, Thergothon, Monolithe, and others and really had a blast listening to this music.

I am always trying to find out new bands through bandcamp, rateyourmusic.com and here at MA but not meeting with much success in finding new bands.

If someone can make some recs that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I doubt very much that you didn't find any band new to you; bands that didn't fit your taste more probably.
Between Tyranny and SOD, there's quite a big gap... What did you listen to that you completely disliked? Maybe it'd be easier that way. To tell us what you don't want... or explain more accurately what you're after...

Mourners Lament (death/doom metal with male grunts and melodic riffs, pure Anathema worship)

The Slow Death (somewhere between funeral doom and death/doom with male grunts and female cleans)
