Burzum - "My Journey to the Stars"

This is the Burzum that I came to know and enjoy.

Hellish God - The Evil Emanations

Really good actually, DM band from Italy who put this out about a week ago.

The Reeferhawks - Reeferhawks

Not so much metal, more so hard rock but it still has a bit of Doom Metal in it. Really good album, favourite so far from this year.

Annihilator - "Wicked Mystic"

I like the bouncy riffs on this one. Perfect headbanging material.

Fear Factory - Soul of a New Machine (1992)

All the memories come flooding back... when it came out this album was one of the first to get me into the more extreme side of metal and I haven't looked back since!

This album has aged very well too... it still has that dark and oppressive atmosphere as I remember it

Running Wild - Death or Glory

Yes, I waited until 2018 to listen to this band. What a waste of 3 decades my life has been up to this point..

Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror (full)

Painfully underrated, this album is just pure fun.
Some of those riffs are at early Sabbath level of quality, i swear

Sepultura - Biotech is Godzilla

''Refuse/Resist'' is kinda fun but I can't say any other track on this record really does much to me. Not an awful album or anything, but I'll rather stick to Sepultura's 80's outputs.

Gordian Knot - Code/Anticode

Man sometimes Gordian Knot just really hits the spot. I wish they'd do a third album and that more metal bands would go into the slightly fusion-y territory.

Fudge Tunnel - "Grey"

I really liked 'Creep Diets' when it first came out. I felt that Earache could market it to get included in the 'alternative metal' umbrella sub-genre of the time. But alas, the musical climate changed and alternative was on the way out in favor of boybands/girl groups.

Samsara Blues Experiment - Thirsty Moon

Revelation & Mystery is a mighty combo of doom metal, psychedelic krautrock and jam-band type shit. Addicting listen.

Grotesque - Submit to Death

This is some good thrashy black/death. Glad I picked this up!

Its single digits outside and what else to listen to but Immortal?

Kreator - "Demon Prince"

The song has a rather clean production that's apparent in the beginning. But it soon develops into a nice thrasher that will be difficult not to headbang to.

Swallow the Sun- Through Her Silvery Body

Was obsessed with doomy death type stuff a few years ago, and revisiting this old staple. The opening piano and its mirroring riff still makes me want to stare out a window to a calm snowfall. Chills.

One of my favourite Edguy tracks. A real epic.

Carcass - "Keep On Rotting In The Free World"

Swansong generally gets a lot of flak from most of the metal population. However, it's not bad as people make it out to be. Sure, it's different from Carcass' previous albums. But its not a total departure from the band's music. It is rock-ier but it's still a metal album and still filled with the sterling musicianship and songwriting we've come to expect from the band. So I say give it another spin.

I love Swansong

NP: Ghostemane - Hexada

I don't mind this brand of aggressive/dark trap. His aesthetic makes a ton of nods to metal, so that's cool too.

Swansong is fine. Not mind-blowing, but fine. But it pales in comparison with Heartwork and Necroticism in terms of quality, and Reek and Symphonies are absolutely different beasts. I was happy they put "Keep On Rotting" into the setlist when I saw them last time, and the crowd seemed to agree.

NP:
Fear - The Record
I really really like this one. The punk edge is definitely there, but it's somewhat intricate in a very primitive, punk way. Good stuff.

Last time i saw Carcass they did a jam with that song and Black Star, it worked really well. Side note, incredible live show!

For Cathedral: indeed! I've been listening to it a lot, i love the variety of moods and the unorthodox vocals. I too like it better than their "classic" debut :)

Testament - The Ritual (full)

Another kinda blasphemous opinion: i love Testament when they drop the heaviness and just rock out

This albums is fun, catchy as hell and Skolnick rips even more than usual.. even the dreaded ballads are good!

Nocturnal Breed - "No Retreat...No Surrender"

Intense and energetic blackened thrash from the '90s retro thrash movement - that's Nocturnal Breed for you. If you're in for manic riffs, frenzied vocals and hyper-beats, you can't go wrong with this album.

Megadeth - "Foreclosure Of A Dream"

One of my favorite tracks from 'Countdown...', too bad they don't play this too much on their tours.

Anthrax - "Make Me Laugh"

State of Euphoria was a bit underwhelming after the beast that was Among the Living. It didn't immediately grab my attention the way ATL did. This track however were one of the first few standout tracks that I liked right away. Probably the one millionth anti-Televangelist song written by a metal band.

Arcturus- Ad Astra

Goddamn. When I first got into metal, I could not get into this record. 20 years late (!!) I have warmed up to it very much.

Enslaved - "Hiindsiight"

Finally got my hands on E. I was expecting In Times Part 2, and while this particular track definitely has some of that vibe, I was overall surprised at how much darker this album is. A good one, though it'll definitely take more listens to fully appreciate.

Why Didn't Rosemary by Deep Purple.

Don't know why it took me this long to listen to 60s Deep Purple, especially since I fucking love the first Rainbow album. Blackmore's guitar playing is very similar here.

I'm also listening to these albums chronologically.

Gave Stained Class another spin today while writing a review for it. What a great album. Still stands the test of time even today. Priest sound so determined, focused and relentlessly tight on this record.

Here is the review, for anyone interested: https://www.metal-archives.com/reviews/ ... ium/339629

Immolation - Atonement (2017)

Late to the party but add me to the list of people impressed by the latest album.

These guys have gotta be the most consistent DM band around - the quality of their output is astounding and never disappoints!

Swans - Filth

It still boggles my mind that this is a 1983 release. Really ahead of its time and still sounds heavy and abrasive as fuck.

Black Cyclone - Death is King (2018)

This is a good thrash release, reminding me a lot of Anthrax.

Also really been trying to get into Megadeth.

Shambles - "Primitive Death Trance"

This song sums it up for Thailand's Shambles' music. It has thick ass riffs that envelop the song that has doomy parts which occasionally speed up beat-wise but the riffs remain slow. Fans of Coffins and Anatomia will absolutely love this.

Sabbat - Welcome to Sabbat/Splatter (Bloody Countess demo - 1991)

I saw this demo got a reissue with some newly painted cover-art and I couldn't deny the urge for some bracking hellpaced metal. This demo in particular is a neat bridge between their 80s work and their first album, Envenom. It's got a lot of that challenging songwriting they were obsessed with in the 80s but streamlined for the debut a bit.

Essentially this is dirty and raw raging death/thrash with dollops of traditional heavy metal glory. Not for wimps or posers or people who like good vocals.
