Id like to know albums that have ritual, dark, mystical themes. bonus Points for usage of orchestras, organ pipes, choirs or other instruments. All sub-genres welcome.
Few albums that more or less represent what im interested of:
Bestia Arcana - To Anabainon ek tes Abyssu
Akhlys - The Dreaming I
Limbonic Art - Moon In The Scorpio
Yhdarl - Ave Maria

Can You hook me up with greatness??

These two from the top of my head:

Obtained Enslavement - Witchcaft. Some amazing, classically inspired pieces and use of real piano.

Odium - Sad Realm of the Stars. BETTER version of Limbonic Art but with own style. It's like what LA was TRYING to get to but not quite made it.

I discovered this strange EP, Guido by Furia that starts out with the first 2 tracks consisting of oddly mellow black metal with mostly spoken word vocals and melodies that I would describe as being more towards post metal, though I don't normally listen to post metal so I'm not too sure. Anyways it's really cool and I want to find more like it. It appears that Furia's other releases are mostly traditional atmospheric black metal.

Can anyone recommend me viking/black/norse metal that sounds like the Einherjer demo, Aurora Borealis? As close to it as possible, thanks!

Their first album "Martwa Polska Jesien" was very good traditional ABM, after that one they started experimenting and became more avantgarde. They returned to something less extreme with their last works but not as strong and powerful as before. Anyway I never managed to find interest in their recent stuff, while still respecting them as talented band.

I need another Gris album like I need air to breathe! 4 years later A L'Âme Enflammée, L'Âme Constellée is still absolutely breathtaking.

This has been kinda a lull year for the Quebec scene overall. 2016 was rather explosive with new albums by Forteresse, Neige et Noirceur, and SDG along with the emergence of Cantique Lépreux and (not black metal but) Chthe'ilist. I think Gris, Monarque, and Sombres Forêts are all due for new albums.

Hi. I'm looking for black metal in the vein of early Paysage d'Hiver. Glacial, winterland black metal. Atmosphere, icy sound.

Hey everyone. This could just as easily fit into the heavy/speed recommendation center but could someone recommend me anything that sounds like REALLY early Bathory? Basically, anything that sounds like Die in Fire, You Don't Move Me (I Don't Give a Fuck) or the songs on Scandinavian Metal Attack. Thanks in advance.

I think that Abigail's album Sweet baby metal slut fits the bill: a quick listen to the song Metal Bitch Inferno should convince you

...yes, don't be fooled by the totally braindead titles/lyrics/everything

Good guidelines are early Ulver, Arckanum, Drudkh, Trollskogen, Ildjarn.

Excuse this broad question: What are your guys' standout black metal album this year? It's been quite a death metally year for me, and I feel as if I missed out on most of the major black metal releases. Would love to get caught up. My tastes in black metal run the gamut, so I'm interested in any albums that caused a stir, really.

Side note: Gosh, the only black metal I've listened to this year that stood out to me, off the top of my head are WIITR, Belphegor, Der Weg einer Freiheit, Vaivatar, and Woe.

To me the Black Metal album of the year is Evilfeast's "Elegies Of The Stellar Wind". Also check out:

Cradle Of Filth: Cryptoriana
Nargaroth: Era Of Threnody
Corpus Christii: Delusion
Satyricon: Deep Calleth Upon Deep
God Dethroned: The World Ablaze
Taake: Kong Vinter

#1 was definitely mayhem - de mysteriis dom. satanas alive for me. the best BM album ever performed live in its entirety. as for "regular studio albums", #1 was wrok - de onheilsbode. primitive, feral black metal unearthed directly from the 90's. thanks to heidens hart for this outstanding piece!

clandestine blaze (city of slaughter) and wulkanaz (paralys) released more than solid albums that are worthy additions to their discographies. necroblood released an awesome, frantic death/black hybrid with collapse of the human race. the last one off the top of my head was behauptungsanimalität by gegen gravitation und willensfreiheit, even though it was of course not as supreme as its predecessor.

My top scoring black metal albums aren't what you'd call "orthodox" black metal. Not sure how many of you guys like Avant-garde/I, Voidhanger atmo-black, but Progenie Terrestre Pura blew me away with their album.

Hey guys.

I'm looking for some recent (say, 2015 onwards or so) experimental/avantgarde black metal but with a raw bm setup. You know, like old Botanist, Tjolgtjar, Blood Cult, etc...
I ask for the most recent recs because the old ones I'm more bound to already know. Also anything that is too well known I am probably already familiar with, so the more obscure the better.
Any recs on that line?

I guess you know the oldest Vinterriket releases (where he was still playing Black Metal, not ambient) ? All Lunar Aurora too.

Check out "It Won't Stay Dead" by Black Tribe. It is experimental raw black metal with a rock vibe, and a singular, weird, mind at the helm of the probject. Similar to Tjogltjar but with industrial tendencies instead of garage rock. Most of the recent releases are harsh noise, similar to Sloth. "Black Metal is a Rotting Corpse 2006-2007" is harsh, experimental blackthrash.

Here is my favorite song, from the "Interference" demo. I like it because of the use of samples from Star Trek: The Animated Series. https://blacktribesucks.bandcamp.com/tr ... -of-an-eye

I'm looking for black metal albums from the 90s, that are heavily overlooked. The hidden gems. I know a lot of black metal, so surprise me! Thanks.

I've only heard Malicia and if I remember correct I enjoyed it! I remember them because their name is the same as an Anaal Nathrakh song and there were some similarities - mostly in the misanthropic BM sound. Will check out the new EP.

In no particular order of preference (name of the release on left, name of band on the right):

"Evil" - Angrenost
"The Conjuration of the Southern Circle" -Decayed
"The Priest of Satan" - The Black
"Arma Christi" - Urgehal
"Nær sólen gar niþer for evogher" and "Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy)" - Dawn
"For kunsten maa vi evig vike" - Kvist
"Tusen år har gått..." - Mörk Gryning
"Far Away from the Sun" - Sacramentum
"Under ein blodraud maane" - Manes
"The Linear Scaffold" - Solefald

Noteworthy, but probably not that overlooked:

"Nordavind" - Storm
"Fjelltronen" - Wongraven
"Till fjälls" - Vintersorg
"In Times Before the Light" and "Nexus Polaris" - Covenant
all the albums by Ophthalamia
"Min tid skal komme" - Fleurety
"Written in Waters" - Ved buens Ende

If you accept the year 2000, check out "Aeons of Magick" from Sirius

Attempted to be broad in the different aesthetics of the time...

PS.: I keep coming back and editing this post since I'm constantly remembering more stuff that might fit the "overlooked" description, but its such a complicated concept given that we're talking about an already "niche" musical Genre.

What would constitute "overlooked"?

"The Art of Dreaming" by Golden Dawn: a jamboree of metal and mayhem, all the ideas of a career in avant garde metal crammed into one debut, code switches from dreamy to ravenous on a dime.
"The Saga of the Horned King" by Evol: cheesy and gothic, an Italian horror movie in black metal form.
"Blot" by Mactatus: bouncy and bassy, a blend of pompous Emperor worship and Venom metal swagger.
"Kirkkokyrpa" by Vintersemestre: Finnish.

Four unique takes on symphonic black metal from the era of nocturnal romanticism. These are obscure enough that most metalheads are not familiar with them, but not so obscure that they are un-listenable demos from nobody bands.

Thanks, but very familiar with these album. Good recommendations, yet I would not call these overlooked. Some of these even have an amazing cult status.

Twilight Elysium - Noctes (1997)
Malignant Eternal - Tarnet (1995)

Overlooked, not really known but great stuff.

Algaion's debut is a riff rollercoaster, i always wonder why is not more popular. Highly suggested
