I discovered this strange EP, Guido by Furia that starts out with the first 2 tracks consisting of oddly mellow black metal with mostly spoken word vocals and melodies that I would describe as being more towards post metal, though I don't normally listen to post metal so I'm not too sure. Anyways it's really cool and I want to find more like it. It appears that Furia's other releases are mostly traditional atmospheric black metal.

Can anyone recommend me viking/black/norse metal that sounds like the Einherjer demo, Aurora Borealis? As close to it as possible, thanks!

Their first album "Martwa Polska Jesien" was very good traditional ABM, after that one they started experimenting and became more avantgarde. They returned to something less extreme with their last works but not as strong and powerful as before. Anyway I never managed to find interest in their recent stuff, while still respecting them as talented band.

I need another Gris album like I need air to breathe! 4 years later A L'Âme Enflammée, L'Âme Constellée is still absolutely breathtaking.

This has been kinda a lull year for the Quebec scene overall. 2016 was rather explosive with new albums by Forteresse, Neige et Noirceur, and SDG along with the emergence of Cantique Lépreux and (not black metal but) Chthe'ilist. I think Gris, Monarque, and Sombres Forêts are all due for new albums.

Excuse this broad question: What are your guys' standout black metal album this year? It's been quite a death metally year for me, and I feel as if I missed out on most of the major black metal releases. Would love to get caught up. My tastes in black metal run the gamut, so I'm interested in any albums that caused a stir, really.

Side note: Gosh, the only black metal I've listened to this year that stood out to me, off the top of my head are WIITR, Belphegor, Der Weg einer Freiheit, Vaivatar, and Woe.

#1 was definitely mayhem - de mysteriis dom. satanas alive for me. the best BM album ever performed live in its entirety. as for "regular studio albums", #1 was wrok - de onheilsbode. primitive, feral black metal unearthed directly from the 90's. thanks to heidens hart for this outstanding piece!

clandestine blaze (city of slaughter) and wulkanaz (paralys) released more than solid albums that are worthy additions to their discographies. necroblood released an awesome, frantic death/black hybrid with collapse of the human race. the last one off the top of my head was behauptungsanimalität by gegen gravitation und willensfreiheit, even though it was of course not as supreme as its predecessor.

My top scoring black metal albums aren't what you'd call "orthodox" black metal. Not sure how many of you guys like Avant-garde/I, Voidhanger atmo-black, but Progenie Terrestre Pura blew me away with their album.

I'm looking for some recent (say, 2015 onwards or so) experimental/avantgarde black metal but with a raw bm setup. You know, like old Botanist, Tjolgtjar, Blood Cult, etc...
I ask for the most recent recs because the old ones I'm more bound to already know. Also anything that is too well known I am probably already familiar with, so the more obscure the better.

Check out "It Won't Stay Dead" by Black Tribe. It is experimental raw black metal with a rock vibe, and a singular, weird, mind at the helm of the probject. Similar to Tjogltjar but with industrial tendencies instead of garage rock. Most of the recent releases are harsh noise, similar to Sloth. "Black Metal is a Rotting Corpse 2006​-​2007" is harsh, experimental blackthrash.

I've only heard Malicia and if I remember correct I enjoyed it! I remember them because their name is the same as an Anaal Nathrakh song and there were some similarities - mostly in the misanthropic BM sound. Will check out the new EP.

PS.: I keep coming back and editing this post since I'm constantly remembering more stuff that might fit the "overlooked" description, but its such a complicated concept given that we're talking about an already "niche" musical Genre.

What would constitute "overlooked"?

"The Art of Dreaming" by Golden Dawn: a jamboree of metal and mayhem, all the ideas of a career in avant garde metal crammed into one debut, code switches from dreamy to ravenous on a dime.
"The Saga of the Horned King" by Evol: cheesy and gothic, an Italian horror movie in black metal form.
"Blot" by Mactatus: bouncy and bassy, a blend of pompous Emperor worship and Venom metal swagger.
"Kirkkokyrpa" by Vintersemestre: Finnish.

Four unique takes on symphonic black metal from the era of nocturnal romanticism. These are obscure enough that most metalheads are not familiar with them, but not so obscure that they are un-listenable demos from nobody bands.

Thanks, but very familiar with these album. Good recommendations, yet I would not call these overlooked. Some of these even have an amazing cult status.
