actually, i've become more selective after listening to at least 50 genre representatives.
MT is too generic even for me. :)
they're repeating five same arpeggios/sweep pickings all the time like many others.
it will be cool to see them live, but this is not enough for home or mp3-player listening.

anyway, I strongly recommend Virulent Depravity to all tech fans.
it sounds like Godzilla drank two barrels of LSD after eating a whole Saint Vitus Bar during the Spawn Of Possession show:

hahahaha! you know when the vegan comes to the market to buy some food,
and when he read: "may contain traces of powdered milk", he'll not buy it.
it reminds me of that, but i don't have any crucial problems with the -core. :)
(especially not with mathcore)
we have good and bad -core bands and influences just like in every genre.

Quote:
Found the band: Octexosis

reminds me of Abigor "time is the sulphur in the veins of the saint" or even of Deathspell Omega, but without vocals is a little boring.

IamDBR wrote:

For melotech try these (disclaimer: some may contain core influence)
Quo Vadis
Arsis
Atlantis Chronicles
Aletheian
Exmortus
Allegaeon
Bloodshot Dawn
Wretched
Plaguebringer
Sentient Ignition

Other crazy shit you might like:
NYN (the latest album): Ridiculous non-stop wankery
The Ritual Aura: Don't remember much, but it was alright
Destroying the Devoid: Kitchen sink prog death
A Million Dead Birds Laughing - Tech deathgrind w/ some weird ritualistic stuff

passed the first round (based on listening one song and/or shifting through the tracklist):
Atlantis Chronicles, Wretched, Sentient Ignition and NYN.
when i listen some whole albums, i'll tell you the full impressions.

The Ritual Aura is in my queue since the middle of summer, hahahah!
AMDBL - heard it before. kind of non-generic, refreshing and funny band. glad you've mentioned it in the "crazy shit" category. :)

*******
and now, my latest discovered recommendation: Sutrah (tech/prog, lots of tempo and atmosphere changes, some reyongs and digeridoo, clean production and not too much "wankery")

Glad to have helped!

I came across Sutrah a couple of days back. Reminds me of Stargazer but with their own thing going on for the most part. Another great tech death release this year imo.

Speaking of unusual mixtures, Impureza sounds pretty cool. Death metal/flamenco. French band with Spanish lyrics.

I'm glad these guys are finally getting some exposure through Seasons of Mist. I was repping them hard in this forum an year or so back. Having said that, the mixing seems a bit off on this one.
.....

I'm looking for some off kilter Swedeath. Dbeats, tremolos & HM2 distortion, all that good shit, along with an added twist.

Edit: I'm totally blanking right now but does anybody recall a tech/bdm band that released an album last year or perhaps two years back which was this weird almost playful take on the style. I recall that it had samples from Richard Dawkins & these other neo atheist types going off about religion & whatnot after every fucking song. Anybody?

Thanks AcidWorm. I keep shifting into and out of my death metal phase. Right now I'm undergoing an atmospheric black metal phase. I expect to find good death metal on these pages nevertheless.

I'm looking for something dark and esoteric. Like Incantation but without the emphasis on satanic lyrics, more occult and obscure orientated themes. Something like The Chasm.

Can anyone recommend some good death metal albums for a black metal fan? I've never really been able to get into the genre other than Bolt Thrower. Thanks.

If you like BT checkout:
Trenchrot - Necronomic Warfare
Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon
Maybe Memoriam perhaps?

Since you like black metal, give these a go:
Excoriate (Germany): They've got one album but it's a reverb laden dm w/ black/thrash leanings as well
Possessed (early): Sloppy, unhinged deathrash fury
Vampire: Death/thrash/speed/black it's all here, latest album is quite the trip
Excommunion: Atmospheric elements
Heresiarch: Death metal oriented war metal, check out the latest album
Teitanblood: Same as above but little more intense & obnoxious
Goatpenis: Flesh Consumed in Battlefield has some killer riffs
Mitochondrion: Convoluted, techy black/death insanity
Behemoth: The Satanist is a pretty accessible album, work your way back

As a black metal fan, my some of my favourite death metal albums are:
Ulcerate - Everything is Fire
Immolation - Unholy Cult
Demilich - Nespithe

These are all on the same timeline of dissonant death metal. Demilich has some parallels to Bolt Thrower, actually. This is the kind of shit you listen to when you're a huge fan of stuff like Paracletus, Flesh Cathedral, Unortheta and so on.

Depends what kind of black metal you prefer you could try some classic black/death metal:
Necrophobic - Nocturnal Silence (balck/death classic)
Belphegor - Last Supper (their later stuff is much more blatantly blackened but their debut is more deathly)
Imprecation - Theurgia Goetia Summa (excellent black/death metal that mixes higher register black metal with chunky bolt thrower esque riffing)
Sentenced - North From Here (icy technical melodic)
Mythos - Pain Amplifier

Otherwise if you are after something reasonably similar to Bolt Thrower id suggest:
Asphyx - Any though I like Last One on Earth (Usually the band that most frequently gets compared to Bolt Thrower see also Hail of Bullets)
Autopsy - Severed survival (essential sludgy and riffy dm that aught to appeal to BT fan, though their second LP Mental Funeral is possibly my favourite dm album of all time)
Obituary - first two albums (similarly midpaced and groovy)
Cianide - Any (chunky mid-paced death/doom, like a lethargic BT)
Jungle Rot - Slaughter The Dead (like BT but retarded)
Caducity - Whirler of Fate (overlooked and awesome epic death metal with some chunky BT esque qualities)
Impaler - Charnel Diety (overlooked UK osdm, simplistic midpaced with a lot of atmosphere)
Armoured Angel - Mysterium (excellent mid-paced dm sort of BT-esque but more melodic)

Other dm that should I would imagine appeals to black metal fans (considering i like both genres):
Incantation - Any though their early stuff is best imo (essential blaphemous death metal)
Infester - To the Depths in Degradation (disgusting sludgy death metal with horror keys and wretched vocals)
Molested - Blod Draum (savage chaotic and ugly Norwegian dm, featured members of Borknagar and Gorgoroth)
Morbius - Any (dunno why this band always gave me the creeps)
Dead Congregation - Any (impeccable Incantation-esque dm, one of the best modern osdm acts, if you like them id also try Grave Miasma, Cruciamentum, Disma and maybe Lantern)

Hopefully dsomething in there you will like

ok, now I'm searching for tech death metal, but with more "epic", blackened and melodic approach to the genre, and not with too much symphonic stuff blended into.
bands like Inferi, Enfold Darkness, Inanimate Existence, Theory in Practice, Vale of Pnath, The Ritual Aura etc.
or even like Between the Buried and Me (from 1st album till "Colors" when they were more death/black/math/fusion metal than gay prog oriented),
but not like Opeth.

any recommendations?

any recommendations?

Enthean: Emperor/Dimmu Borgir influence, plus some bluesy stuff as well
Singularity: I don't now what to compare these guys to but they fit the the bill for blackened prog/tech death
Empyrean Throne: Behemoth goes tech death, the new album reminds me of Naglfar or something
Direwolf: Reminds me of old school tech thrash but with synths & space opera shtick, it's kinda cheesy but very enjoyable imo, surprisingly it's all from the guitarist of Behold the Arctopus which is some of the most unlistenable wankery ever created
Lorna Shore: Blackened deathcore with tech death precision, the vocals are unnecessarily overproduced though

I have some more for you

Drowned - Viscera Terræ
One of the best "occult" death metal bands, Viscera Terræ is a demo but fucking awesome. Their more recent full length is also worth checking out. They share members with Necros Christos.
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Drowned/9913

Shaarimoth
These Norwegian Chaos-Gnosticists just released their second album this year - their occult death metal classic Current 11 is from 2005. Both are worth checking out, I was really into Current 11 back in the day.
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Shaarimoth/55213

Execration - Odes of the Occult
These guys from, again, Norway, are amazing. They have a new album out this year, which is very good, but nothing compared to the craziness that is Odes of the Occult. One of my top 5 albums from the last 10 years probably.
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Execration/85261

Blood Incantation - Starspawn
This one is just fucking amazing, one of the best young death metal bands out there!
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Bl ... 3540368063

There are loads more that have either that Incantation/caverncore sound mixed with some occult bearings or some more trad. old school death metal with weirder riffs and atmospheres, and some of them are very, very good like Cruciamentum (!), Imprecation (which is a "real" old school band, but both their old album and the new one are worth looking at), Swallowed (more doom-death), Ascended (their Temple of Dark Offerings-EP is great), Krypts (also fairly doom-ish)...

All these, both the first four and the ones in the list, are fairly different, but still with a recognizable "occult" vibe, I think. I was really into this style of death metal for a long time, but many of the bands I haven't listened a lot to recently, so it was great to remember them. If you need more I'm sure I can dig some more names up for you.

I recall the latest two Soulskinner albums sharing a healthy amount of Bolt Thrower influences.

Acephalix - Deathless Master
Astigarraga Thrower
Blood Mortized
Bodyfarm
Brutally Deceased
Decaying
Drown In Blood
Hellshock (heavy crust punk)
Morbid Flesh
Entrails
Gatecreeper
Grand Supreme Blood Court
Graveyard
Lifeless
Revel In Flesh
Skeletal Remains
Weak Aside - The Next Offensive

You could give Dhwesha a try.

They're an Indian band with strong Bolt Thrower vibes, but it's definitely not a case of a clone band. Their only LP Sthoopa is very good.

Anyone know of some good brutal death bands? To give an example of what I'm looking for, I've recently discovered Devourment (the one from Texas) and Devour the Unborn and I really like both. Maybe I just like things involving the word devour.

I'm looking for melodic death metal in the vein of Amon Amarth's The Avenger. More specifically, I'm looking for a nice mix of aggressive and epic, with a somewhat raw production and a lot of tremolo picking. The production on The Avenger is about as pretty as I want it to be, but if there's a more polished album that someone thinks I should check out, I'm more than happy to give it a go.

Two final notes:

1. I know almost nothing about melodeath. Aside from all of Amon Amarth's albums and Hypocrisy's Virus, I've heard pretty much nothing from the genre. Nothing is too obvious.

2. Because we're talking about Amon Amarth, and given what they're known for, I should mention that I don't care about lyrical themes.

I think you'd probably dig the following four bands: Be'lakor, Insomnium, Zonaria (if you liked Hypocrisy), and In Mourning (less melodic death and more progressive death, but very similar to Be'lakor and Insomnium in terms of song structure). You might want to check out Unleashed and Hateform, although neither is melodic death metal. Unleashed is straight up death metal, but relatively similar to Amon Amarth in terms of lyrical content, and they both have a very epic feeling to them. Hateform is death/thrash, but there's plenty of melody, although their first album (Dominion) is just straight up death/thrash and lacks the more melodic (although no less aggressive) approach of their second and third albums.

Considering that both of those bands hail from Texas, here's a list of some good ol' TXDM for you.

Viral Load
Putrilage
Insidious Decrepancy
Sadistic Butchering
Sculpting Atrocity
Urosepsis
Bowels Out
Embalmed
Images of Violence
Embodyment (early stuff only)
Severance
Execration
Flesh Hoarder
Disfigured
Scattered Remains
Sect of Execration
Malthusia
Aversion to Life
Seraphic Enthronement
Necrocide
Sintury
Grotesque Formation
Human Chunks
Human Effluence
Disencumbrance
Oppressive Force
Braced for Nails
Infliction
Meshiha
Vitality
Defiled Crypt
Gored
Defleshed and Gutted
Desecrate the Faith
Ingurgitate
mē◦āt◦َus
Prophecy
Acerbus
Demonseed
Diminished
Eviscerated
Infernal Dominion
Primordius
Uncleansed
Exulcerate
Engaged in Mutilating

Since you like Devourment, here's a couple GOOD slam death metal/proto-BDM type bands in a similar vein, lots of crunchy pit riffs and gutturals, no smooth productions with plastic drums.

Internal Bleeding
Digested Flesh
Soils of Fate
MP5k
Dehumanized
Eternal Suffering
Bodysnatch
Entorturment
Afterbirth (NY, check out the first demo)
Repudilation
Vomit Remnants
Disfigured (NY)
Disconformity
Glossectomy
Human Rejection
Poppy Seed Grinder
Infernal Revulsion
Dyscrasia

If you're looking into getting into brutal death metal, check out some of the classicks/bigger names like:

Pyrexia (Sermon of Mockery is all you need)
Dying Fetus
Skinless (Early stuff only)
Disgorge
Suffocation (first three albums especially)
Nile
Cattle Decapitation (I'm not a fan of most of their work, but you're going to hear their name at some point, so if you feel compelled to listen to them, check out something like "To Serve Man" or another early work.)
Deeds of Flesh
Prostitute Disfigurement
Lividity
Gorgasm
Defeated Sanity
Broken Hope
Origin (obviously tech-death as fuck, but still generally considered borderline brutal death.

Most of those will serve as a bit of a bridge between "normal" death metal and brutal death. A lot of 90s/early 2000s stuff will do that, such as:

Severe Torture
Mutilated (MI)
Splattered Cadaver
Jungle Rot (they get a lot of hate, but the early albums are barbarically fun)
Malignancy
Inveracity
Fleshgrind
Mortal Decay
Gorelust
Torture Krypt
Killing Addiction
Infernal Torment
Iniquity
Feticide (DEN)

Surely you'll like at least a few of those. Let me know what you like and do not like and I'll try to give some more specific recommendations.

I'm looking for a particular album. I don't know the bands name, though I'm sure some of the members are from bigger well known bands. It came out either early this year or last year. Fairly certain it's a death metal record, and the cover art itself features predominantly red, with a centurion holding a Roman ensign. I'm sketchy with this, and may have some of the details wrong. The album was definitely discussed here a little while ago, so I'm hoping somebody can dig it up.

I'm looking for some mid-paced, groovy, droney death metal with atonal harmonies in vein ofMA's groovier songs (e.g. most of Gateways to Annihilation) and some songs on Sotajumala's Death Metal Finland.

Sotajumala - Pommitus

Morbid Angel - Summoning Redemption

Looking for stuff which sounds like Amon Amarth, heavy on those long tremolo riffs composed from same length notes (the "2WBM" riffs) coupled with a slower pace on the snare drum. I know Dismember has some songs like that, also Malevolent Creation, but not enough x) I guess some black metal with good production (clear sound of riffs) and slower snare drumming would fit too..

Like eg Death in Fire from 2:40

I have been listening to them for a long time and i just thought they were brutal death metal. I had no idea what makes "Slam Death Metal"
From Wikipedia:

Some bands occasionally alternate fast and aggressive parts with slower grooves and breakdowns. Bands who focus more on these slower groovy parts and breakdowns are sometimes referred to as slam death metal.
Basically, Slam Metal is the evolution of Brutal Tech Death. Extermination Dismemberment is a good example. It's also almost like the vocal style of Deathcore with a Dying Fetus or better a Skinless instrumental structure. Devourment doesn't have the fancy bass drops and screaming vocals like Slam Metal mostly has.

I have some more for you

Drowned - Viscera Terræ
One of the best "occult" death metal bands, Viscera Terræ is a demo but fucking awesome. Their more recent full length is also worth checking out. They share members with Necros Christos.

Shaarimoth
These Norwegian Chaos-Gnosticists just released their second album this year - their occult death metal classic Current 11 is from 2005. Both are worth checking out, I was really into Current 11 back in the day.

Execration - Odes of the Occult
These guys from, again, Norway, are amazing. They have a new album out this year, which is very good, but nothing compared to the craziness that is Odes of the Occult. One of my top 5 albums from the last 10 years probably.

Blood Incantation - Starspawn
This one is just fucking amazing, one of the best young death metal bands out there!

Mystifier is good dark stuff. Most of the similar artists would be good too. Some maybe a little more on the Black Metal side but you'll probably discover what the kids call Black Death or Blackened Death maybe find a little Death/Doom as well.

I think you should listen to some more classic melodeath like Dark Tranquility or At the Gates. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but pretty similar.

Anyone know any recent brutal death in the vein of Gorgasm? Masticate, and Orgy of Murder were my favorite albums by them.

So basically just brutal death metal with decent yet dirty production and sparse moments of really nice melodic passages.
