As a BVB fan, I sure don't want Tuchel to move to Munich!

I didn't watch the game, but Everton followed up their embarassing game against Atalanta in the first round with drawing 2-2 at home against Apollon Limassol. This despite Limassol getting a red card in the 86th minute when Everton had 2-1. I watched Lyon-Atalanta (1-1) and even though many games remain, I'm quite sure those two will advance from that group, leaving Everton eliminated.

I also watched Zenit St. Petersburg, coached by Roberto Mancini, playing quite impressively in their 3-1 win at home against Sociedad.

Some upsets:
Hoffenheim lost in Bulgaria against Ludogorets Razgrad by 2-1. Though to be fair, Ludogorets have had some impressive results in Europe in recent years. Marseille lost away to the stupid Red Bull club Salzburg by 1-0. Sheriff from Moldavia got 0-0 against Copenhagen, and Villareal only got the same score away against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

One group stands out regarding unexpected results today, namely group J, where Östersund defeated Hertha Berlin with 1-0, and Zorya Lugansk won away against Bilbao with the same score.

Exactly what I feared: Tuchel will be Bayern's new coach... :(

I guess we'll win both games against Apoel and qualify for the Europa League. ;)

Did not see that coming at all. Going back to a huge club like that after four years of retirement...

though it seems quite logical from bayern's/hoeness's point of view. obviously, heynckes is not supposed nor going to replicate the 2013 triple in this season, but to ease the situation in munich, go "back to the roots" image-wise after the big trainer names etc.
more or less coinciding with hiring salihamidcic, that seems to be the way they're heading right now.

Shocked to see that the US managed to miss the World Cup despite practically only needing one point against the clearly worst team in the group, Trinidad and Tobago in the last game. But, they managed to lose with 2-1 and instead it's Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama that will play the WC of the teams from CONCACAF, whereas Honduras will continue to another qualification stage against Australia.

It will be the first WC for Panama.

As expected, also no Netherlands in the WC. Also fun that Iceland have reached their first WC ever, winning their group ahead of Croatia. They are the smallest country by population ever to reach the WC.

Paraguay also messed up by losing at home to the weakest South American team, Venezuela with 0-1, when a win would have gotten them to face New Zeeland in two games that could give them a WC spot. Instead, Peru got that spot.

Chile missing the world cup is terrible. No Alexis or Vidal :(

Apart from that, it was a very intense day! Messi turned on God mode, Portugal played their best game in quite some time and Peru and Panama get to live the dream. Looking forward to next year!!

Not unexpected for the Netherlands indeed. There is some imbalance in the squad. Everybody blames it on having a weaker generation etc but frankly the individual level of the players should be high enough to become 2nd in the group. It was prob a bad idea to let Blind take over from Hiddink after the inevitable post WC crash. Personally i'm hoping for a foreign coach like Tuchel. I think its time for something different.

Lol You want something different at Netherlands.. DeBoer is available haha The Netherlands have such an ingrained footballing culture that they won't just get an outside opinion. They just won't. The problem is that Dutch football is clearly stagnant and the majority of coaches coming through now aren't good enough either. Your league, national team, and senior coaching is a bit of a mess right now.

Like United States. I am okay with not making it. We don't deserve it. Bruce Arena is a shitty coach who dislikes our immigrant and foreign players anyways. He also openly admitted to being outcoached by the Panama coach.. Excuse me? Get a new fucking job dude, losing is fine but you just admitted to not doing your job to best prepare our team against some nobodys. Our older generation is becoming pathetic too, they can leave as gracefully as not making a world cup can be and vanish into the wind. I wish Landon Donovan would do the same. I'm so fed up with American soccer. The good thing about not making the world cup is that now literally everyone is having the conversation of what we can and should do better.

City is insane btw. They tore through stoke today no problem. I can't wait to see what this squad can do this year.

the biggest problem of our league is that the good players leave at ever younger ages, comparatively we dont manage to keep them as long as clubs of similar financial stature like for example Benfica and Lazio have similar budgets.
Also there are a number of coaches out there heavily influenced by the dutch way of footballing enjoying success from Chile winning the south american cup to dortmund and ofcourse pep guardiola. The coaches in our league are for the most part decent tacticians but they have to work with ever younger players. However it is true that we are not as innovative as we used to be and i think the best way to get on track is with a foreign coach who had recent successes based on a dutch like system to help it innovate.

Terrible round for the portuguese teams again in the UCL. Porto did way too many defensive fuckups (though RBLeipzig have a very talented and intense front line), Benfica couldn't hold United's pressure and Sporting, despite getting the first one in and playing a very good 2nd half, still had to lose due to another mistake by Jonathan Silva (third time this year, just in UCL).

Also, although I haven't watched it, it must have been a crazy match at Stamford Bridge.

And they now have taken two points in games against Atletico Madrid. Quite the upset.

It has to be mentioned that Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958. Coincidentally, they lost now to Sweden, and the '58 edition was held in Sweden.

It was the last national team game for Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Daniele De Rossi and Gianluigi Buffon.

While it is true that the italians don't have a star filled side anymore like they did in 2006, with Del Piero, Totti, Pirlo, Cannavaro, Nesta, Gattuso, Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Toni or Iaquinta they still had a good enough set of players who could make a difference, such as the aforementioned veterans Chiellini, Barzagli, De Rossi as well as Bonucci, Candreva, Insigne, El Shaarawy, Verratti and Immobile. Their main problem is Ventura ( Glad that's been taken care of now). It wasn't expected of them to surpass Spain in the group stage but Sweden... come on. I like them but they haven't got the same individual quality as the Azzurri (only a better team and well, that's football).

Feel sad for the massive legend that is Buffon, a true gentleman both on and off the pitch. However he already won the 2006 WC so it's not as terrible to him as it could be :). The only thing he's really missing in his career is a Champions League title.

Also, Zlatan will probably return to the squad just before the tournament begins.

Maybe the most extraordinary thing from the weekend was the fact that Dortmund threw away a 4-0 lead to 4-4 at home in the Ruhr Derby against Schalke.

Group B is the highlight for me there purely because it's so cool to have 3 countries in the same World Cup group that share a border. Pretty interesting!

England will finish second and lose to Brazil or Germany in the second round. Nailed. Unless joe Hart plays. In which case they won't get out of the group.

Those are some fairly interesting groups. Russia was very lucky to get the group it got. My bold prediction is that Germany will defend its title in the final against France. Poland will finish third and Portugal fourth.

I'd say the bronze in '98 was a success.

Well, hosts have a history of getting easy draws unproportionally often... And with the big FIFA scandals of recent years, I'm very open to the idea of corrupt draws in that regard.

I know about pots. What I'm saying is that hosts avoid the better teams from the other pots in an unproportional degree throughout WC history.

Yeah! Croatia had a great team in '98.. For a small population they produce good players.

West Ham did a job on that parasitic, plastic, brand fan, football club, Chelsea. Someone is going to miss out on that top four spot; either Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, or Arsenal, and I'm guessing that it will be one of the latters.

I'm calling an Arsenal, Liverpool, and City win today.

Well, the info was for everyone...

Anyway, here is the EL round of 32 draw:

Dortmund-Atalanta
Nice-Lokomotiv Moscow
Copenhagen-Atletico Madrid
Spartak Moscow-Bilbao
AEK Athens-Dynamo Kyiv
Celtic-Zenith St. Petersburg
Napoli-Leipzig
Red Star-CSKA Moscow
Lyon-Villareal
Partizan-Viktoria Plzen
Steaua Bucarest-Lazio
Ludogorets Razgrad-Milan
Astana-Sporting Portugal
Östersund-Arsenal
Marseille-Braga

Interesting that Russia have four teams in it, three of which from Moscow. And Belgrade have two.

Zenit? Hell no. Dortmund (if their new manager can turn things around), Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Arsenal are the best candidates. Though I do hope Sporting CP can take it :)

Nonetheless, great teams in the EL this year!

Not to mention teams like Lyon and Lazio.

Anyway, forgot to post the CL draw:

Juventus-Tottenham
Basel-Manchester C
Porto-Liverpool
Sevilla-Manchester U
Real Madrid-Paris Saint-Germain
Shakhtar Donetsk-Roma
Chelsea-Barcelona
Bayern Munich-Besiktas
