i thought about this thread while i was checking some old pictures with my wife and i just realized that i have seen Children of Bodom twice. Don't get me wrong, i don't hate COB, i fact i love their first four albums, but is not a band i would spend my hard earned just to see them live (not to mention the fact that i have to pay bus tickets to Mexico City, hotel, meals, souvernirs, etc) if it wasn't for other reasons besides COB.

The first time i went to see them was bacause my wife is a huge fan of Floor Jansen and ReVamp was opening for them and i wanted to give her an special moment with her favorite singer.

The second time i decided to go because Amorphis was opening and freakin' love Amorphis.

What about you guys? Remember 4 or 5 years ago many people was complaining about seeing Blackguard waaay to many times.

I've seen Blackguard 4 times, although I honestly didn't mind much. They're fun live and have a couple of good songs. They would probably be the best example of this kind of band though because I normally show up right before the bands I want to see and leave after them (I saw the Delain/HammerFall tour 3 times last week and only watched Delain once...).

Another good example would be Kamelot. Although I've grown to like them now, that's a bit more recent for me. I've only seen them once (Wacken 2012, in the most insane downpour I've ever seen in my life), but I've left their headlining shows 3 times before they went on (w/Alestorm in 2011, and w/Dragonforce twice in 2015). I don't really regret it even though I enjoy their music these days.

I've seen Goatwhore four or five times now. On a tour of say five bands, they'll always been two or so steps behind the headliner. Good band, enjoyable live, but wouldn't say I love them. I think two of those times it was a Behemoth headliner tour.

If I like a band, I'll go see them- as many times as I can, especially if they sound great and put on a good show. Sometimes, its a case of, it gets me out of the house and is an excuse to go out and have a good time. If I don't like a band or don't want to see them live, I wont go.

The way the scenario described in the original post above can happen (where you see a band live ther you really would rather not) is if they end up opening for a band (or bands) that you DO want to see.

In the late 90's/early 2000s there was this band Snapcase. They were some kind of terrible "progressive" or whatever you would call it, dissonant hardcore without any real flow or coherent song structure- aggressive, but the music was totally unfocused and dissonant. I didn't like em the first time I saw them, and I didn't like 'em any better the second time I saw them. Both times it was because I was there to see the headlining band (TSOL and Good Riddance at the 2000 Warped tour, and then Face to Face the following year) and this crappy Snapcase band was stuck on the bill both times. Oddly enough, when I listened to a studio recording of theirs long after this, it was one of their earlirer albums, they didn't really sound that bad for some reason.

I think that anyone who's a metalhead and went to metal shows mostly in Montreal from 2008 to roughly 2015 would have to agree with you on this. These guys were every-fucking-where! They opened for basically any band regardless of genre. I remember people complaining a lot about them, not because they hated them, but because they were tired of seeing them at every single show possible.

The two that stick out for me are The Black Dahlia Murder and Trivium. Holy shit, about ten years ago I couldn't get away from those two bands. The only plus was that they were usually bigger than the bands they were playing with so I could split before their sets. I remember asking hegg from Amon amarth in SLC why the fuck they were opening for Trivium. He just laughed.

More recently, cryptopsy.

Probably Blackguard. Seen them maybe 5 or 6 times. They seemed to be on every damn tour back around 2010. I enjoyed them the first couple times, but after that it got a bit old...

The two that come to mind are Machine Head and Lamb of God, neither of which I like. Machine Head I've seen twice, supporting Metallica both times (once in 2007, once in 2009). Lamb of God I've also seen twice as support for Slayer and Megadeth respectively.

Not metal but Dritte Wahl twice, once as support for a good band and once as headliner after a good band, tried to avoid hearing a single note as much as I could and those pop punk wusses need to go die.

aww come on man, I know perfectly well what kind of band they are (I'm fairly sure I saw them too at at least one of the 2 gigs you mentioned. headlining after paradox maybe?), but they have a number of real killer tunes in their early discography (auge um auge, nur ein sklave, greif ein etc.). you know, but then again I even like bad k. A LOT, since I grew up on it.
those early good songs they have might yield one good, rather short-ish best-of compilation if selected thouroughly, but most likely they already have a shit one out on amöbenklang with lots of later crap on it.

Seeing them the first time opening for Fliehende Stürme was probably what killed it.

I've seen Kreator and Epica more than once which I didn't mind. For Epica, I watched it the first time in Lebanon (my origin country) which they played "Kingdom of Heaven" and it was an outstanding and was in hope for them to play it again when I saw them again in Vancouver but they didn't :( But hey, one of the guitarists high-fived me. :p

Who the hell are Blackguard? Never heard of them. Judging by the comments, maybe that's just as it should.

I saw Dragonforce once, definitely one time too many. Atrocious music, horrible musicianship, and the guitarists jumping and running up and down the stage reminded me more of a kindergarten gone wild than a metal show.

Also, Insomnium two or three times. As faceless a show as their music. More boring than having to explain my Grotesque patch to my students for the millionth time.

Embarrassing but; Godsmack.

I saw them once when their first record came out. I was just getting into anything heavy, and they came through and I went.
But then they opened for Metallica 3 times. Gross.

Emperor.. Man I wouldn't mind seeing Emperor too many times. If only I would have seen them once. For myself, Blackguard comes to mind and more recently Midnight. They give a good show, they definitely have a lot of exposure these days, but they are not the reason why I buy my ticket.

tl;dr: Orange Goblin, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil

Spoiler: show
there was a time, late 90s/early 00s when Orange Goblin were everywhere. (years later I also found out the reasons, but that's a story or 25 for another time.) I'd go see a band, they'd be opening. They'd be playing the small club across the street from the bar I was. I once walked in HMV (record store, yo?) and they were playing a "surprise gig". at the same time, I had friends (in other countries) who would w**k off to their debut (pardon me language) and they'd kill me for complaining about seeing them live again when they never had. I sorta liked their debut, but I haven't touched it in 17 years.

in a similar situ, when Century Media was still trying to break this city/country (like 15 years ago), they'd put together "CM mini-fests", with 4-5-6 bands. I'd go see Poisonblack (with JPL) and Passenger and they'd both be supporting Moonspell. Tiamat, ditto. Sentenced finally booked a gig to play here, and Lacuna Coil were announced as the support, then mysteriously the order was switched and Sentenced played for under an hour :/ I cried, I think. again, I still have friends who are bummed that I've seen Moonspell on every tour since BFX :/ it's hard to explain that I'd happily trade that for a full Sentected show on the Crimson tour.

speaking of LC, I remember talking to them after their first gig here in 99/00, and Christina spoke very little inglis. Andrea even less. on or off stage.

anyway. storytime is over. who's up for a Savatage tour?

Emperor are one sided, those who love them live and those who think they're really not that good, it's not hard to figure out what side is going to be weighted more. Agreed, never seen Midnight live, but by the spins of the records I own, they only get a look in every now and again due to very familiar feel by the end of every play.

Origin 15 times. But mostly through festivals and going for other bands on the bill. Midnight is awesome live, I would go to see them every time if I could afford it.

The Saga of "Who's the support" "...oh, it's DRAGONFORCE AGAIN ?!"

- Bloodstock (at least twice)
- Supporting Edguy (so. much. spandex.)
- Supporting WASP (no, I don't know why either)
- Supporting Sonata Arctica (or the other way around, not sure, in the US)
- Donnington (at least twice, pretty sure it was Maiden headlining)

I also have a vague memory of seeing Saxon and Dragonforce on the same bill, but that must have been Bloodstock - Can't imagine their crowds would mix too well in a club / hall - all of that brown ale & red bull in the same room !

I think I've seen Iron Maiden four times. I think their music is fine but its not something I really put on and enjoy while at home. The first three times were awesome. The fourth time (A Matter of Life and Death tour) I just felt, mid-show, that I don't really enjoy myself.

I have managed to catch Slayer loads of times also. Musically they are in the same folder as Iron maiden for me - not something I listen to at home by myself. They were always excellent live though.

All that said I don't go to many shows anymore. I don't like the average live shows all that much I've discovered.

Exodus 3 times. Pretty good live band, but it was all around roughly a 3 year period where they hardly changed their set list. The 3rd time when I saw them before King Diamond I more or less just stood in place and nodded my head.

I've seen Lamb of God twice - 2 more than what I would've wanted. The first time was for a fest like situation where I would have to wait and endure watching their set to be able to watch the bands I came to see. Second time was when they opened for Judas Priest during the latter's Asian tour. Again, I had to agonizingly endure their set to be able to see Judas Priest.

Oh yeah, I also saw Dragonforce live twice, both in a festival environment. The first time was because I came to see Cannibal Corpse and Dragonforce played 2 bands ahead of them. They were actually decent at the time and I was surprised with the positive audience response, people actually clapped and enjoyed their set. Power metal isn't that popular here in the Philippines and I expected the crowd to sit idly during their set.

Just this April, I saw Dragonforce again in the same festival (we only have one major 'metal' fest here in the Philippines) and this time I actually convinced my friends to come in early to catch their set as they were playing before Megadeth. Wrong move. Dragonforce's set was mired by tech problems and their music regressed into something lifeless and emotion-less. They played fast but there was no fire, no intensity behind it.

Sabaton, 3 times. I never once saw them on purpose, they were just on the bill. I got to wondering if they were possible to avoid, because they seemed to be everywhere. They put on good live shows, but it got a little old. I would get a ticket for Amon Amarth or someone, and find out I would be seeing fucking Sabaton again too.

Ive seen Iron Maiden 4 times i think (1998 - 1999 - 2003 - 2014), and Megadeth 5 times (1997 - 1999 - 2007 - 2012 - 2016).
Oddly enough, i enjoyed more the last ones, but i guess i'm done with seeing these bands live.

Hmm... probably Cannibal Corpse. I saw them once with Barnes and 3 with Corpsegrinder. They're solid live, but twice was enough (2nd was 98' with Death and Incantation). The 3rd time (around 2002) was not good and the last one was just the same thing.

Mar de Grises (now RIP). I saw them live countless times since I shared stage with them in plenty. They were always good live, but when the singer/keyboardist left, the band was over.

Poema Arcanvs. The kind of band that are doing exactly the same thing and sounding the same since always. Up to this point, I totally avoid to see them.

Iron Maiden and Megadeth. At least IM is a must, at least once in a lifetime but more than 3 is too much.

Slayer. I will never see them live again. I saw them with the classic lineup twice and the last time was Holt on guitar. King was totally on somewhere else, playing by the numbers.

Soilwork 4 times. At the beginning of the 2000s they were opening for everyone. That's when Björn was starting to use clean vocals, and it was horrible! Funily enough, I really like his singing (and the music) in The Night Flight Orchestra now. He has improved over the years.

Between the Buried and Me (not metal, but close enough, and I think they should be on here).

I've seen them three times now and have liked them less each time. I've never been a massive fan of them - I like a few songs here and there and their first album is pretty cool, but sometimes they just try and do too much in a song. I mostly went because I had a lot of friends in high school who were really into them. First time they were enjoyable enough (and holy hell, the crowd went nuts for them). Second time I saw them, Russian Circles opened up for them and completely stole the show. Third time I saw them was when they opened up for Meshuggah and I wasn't even interested during their set at that point. It seems like their live show is just a lot of novelties that are kind of fun the first time around, but by the third time it felt super contrived. Also it didn't help that Meshuggah utterly decimated their set and made me totally forget about BTBAM.

From 1993 to 1998, I saw the Québec death metal band Necronomicon 7 times, always as an opening act. They had a few line up changes in the meanwhile.

I remember chatting with their drummer and telling him this was my 6th or 7th time seeing their show. He kind of apologised that it had been pretty much the same setlist for a while, but as an opening act with few releases, can't do much about it

Folkstone. Lost count, but at least more than ten times :( my old company of friends was obsessed by them and followed the shows.. stuff like this destroys your sanity.

Manegarm, caught randomly five times during festivals.. enjoyable live band, but i don't like much the style.

Arkona, three times. Ear-raping drum sound every single time, wich is surprising considering that their drummer is a pro-touring musician that plays in 1000 bands :(

When I first started going to shows in the late 90s/early 2000s, things were very different here than the yare now. There just weren't that many bands to go round and it seemed like bills were a lot stranger. You got a lot of different sorts of metal bands of different styles on the same bill, and they weren't all necessarily on the same tour. The promoter would basically smash two tours together to get the most out of a single night when bands were in town. There were also a few of the same local bands that seemed to turn up to play every show.

I remember seeing Kataklysm a whole lot. At first they were sort of entertaining to me but I quickly started to realise just how dull and by numbers most of their music was, without anything captivating to offer. They would play with anyone from nevermore (whom I also saw a lot) to Cryptopsy to Dimmu Borgir. Whatever gig they could get, basically, I guess. So yeah, that was a big one.

Sad to say, but Taake. Excellent live band on all areas, and one of my top 3 bands easily, but after seeing them thrice, I sort of knew their setlist inside and out (they rarely update it). The first time I saw them I had only heard the track Nattestid 1 and I didn't really know the band, and I was just blown away by the quality of the riffs and the powerful presence of Hoest.
