The inclusion of Evanescence, RATM, and Korn are dubious, but otherwise it's nowhere near as offensive a list as you make it out to be, OP. It's mostly fine.

No Ace of Spades, Sin After Sin, Sad Wings of Destiny, Piece of Mind, Balls to the Wall (Or any Accept for that matter), and putting Vulgar Display of Power in the top 10, better than Master of Reality, Holy Diver, Powerslave, and Stained Class. What is offensive is the authority Rolling Stone imagine they still wield when they vomit lists like these over the public. The list itself isn't that surprising. But the writing is hyperbolic yet most of what it reveals is predictable. Kreator, Saxon, Blind Guardian, Sabbat (UK), Fates Warning and Candlemass are all predictably missing. There's no Don't Break The Oath and no Ample Destruction but that's also predictable because how else then would they make space for Avenged Sevenfold and Evanescence.

EDIT: the lack of Don't Break The Oath should not be predictable...in fact, it is upsetting!

Eh, it's pretty bad, but maybe not as bad as one would expect of such a thing. By that I mean, while System Of A Down outranks Celtic Frost...at least Celtic Frost makes the list. Really, it's like about half classic/minor-classic albums representing most genres, but of course with a large number of weird, inessential, fad, garbage, and/or non-metal selections thrown in at random.

To save your scrolling finger some work, here's the list, minus the commentary (which I mostly skipped):

Not that bad of a list. If you're gonna get upset every time a mainstream metal publication doesn't mention Ample Destruction and Don't Break the Oath then you're just setting yourself up for needless stress.

No band should appear on there more than once, that's stupid. Also Avenged Sevenfold? Fuck off and die.

Also, Rust in Peace should clearly be at the top.

It's 100 albums, first off. Secondly, they're probably going by "most impactful" which explains more of this list. I assume a certain amount of it is personal opinion.

Anyone who gives any flying fucks about lists from Rolling Stone magazine needs to re-check their priorities or something.

Not everyone has the same definition of "metal" as us, so never mind bands on the list that we don't think should be there.
And not everyone has the same taste, so never mind if they didn't pick the album that we think is probably the band's best.
They also probably judge by impact, overall recognition, and other weird criteria all their own. So never mind what you think of the quality of the list.

Add it all up, and it equals Never Mind.

I stumbled onto this last night, and I agree with those saying it's not that bad. There's a number of terrible selections, but I was still somewhat impressed to see lesser-known bands (by mainstream standards) like Voivod and Entombed and that they left off most hard rock. Rolling Stones has done much worse.

Voivod should be in top 20, easily. DH is like, the pinnacle of Canadian metal.

The number of times Metallica and Death appear on this list times a hundred is the number of times one should be caned for taking any "greatest of all time" list produced by Rolling Stone seriously!

Yeah I saw this and prepared myself for eternal cringing but really it's not the worst thing. Not only does it mean nothing because I mean come on it's Rolling Stone, it's also really tame. It seemed kind haphazard and things were thrown in semi randomly like they only truly put thought into ranking the top 20 or so but otherwise it's just eh. I'm not walking into this sort of thing expecting underground classics to have any representation anyway so what was there to be upset about?

Some of those on that list I agree with, and like many of you, I think some of them are great albums but the classification of "Metal" is the controversial sticking point.

Some of them should not be on that list at all. Naked City?!? No. I mean, even if for some reason you actually like Naked City (I mean, yeah, they ARE unique and all...), they have about as much to do with metal as the Dixie Chicks.

It's nice to see DarkThrone, High on Fire and Bathory get the props they deserve. Same with Kyuss, one of those bands whose "Metal-ness" is borderline at best, but they are an epically awesome band either way.

Sure, their list isn't exactly what mine would be (I'd personally like to use Dillinger Escape Plan CD's for target practice) I think overall, they could do a lot worse.

I also couldn't help noticing that the two Ozzy albums listed are both exclusively from the Randy Rhodes era. So on that, at least, Rolling Stone and I do think alike.

I don't know if these guys don't know what "metal" is or they're familiar with so little actual metal bands that they just fill these lists with whatever band they can think of. Don't take me wrong, I'm not saying Deftones, Evanescence or Avenged Sevenfold are bad (I don't like any of them though) but if you're gonna add all of those non-metal bands, then don't put the word METAL in your title.

Thank you. Don't Break the Oath is amazing, but Melissa is the one I tend to reach for when I want classic Mercyful Fate. The first two tracks alone are pure gold.

Avenged Sevenfold are a lot more metal than some of the bands on that list. Though I am certainly not the biggest Avenged Sevenfold fan by any stretch- I have no real strong feelings on this band one way or another. Nonetheless, I could name at least a dozen albums that I would add to the list before I even THOUGHT of Avenged Sevenfold...

The list was way better than I anticipated, but you need to remember that these are mainstream music journalists who probably don't understand what the metal genre actually is.

Like anything like this, the authors always have very different definitions of what constitutes "metal." I've seen things like this that consider Limp Bizkit metal of all fucking things. Obviously, given the strict definitions in use on this site, we're going to disagree with a lot.

There are more surprises in here than I expected. For instance, someone at Rolling Stone has heard of Diamond Head, Mayhem, Carcass, Death, and Gojira? I find that hard to believe, yet here we are. Some of these choices are dubious at best. And some aren't even the best a band put out, let alone the best on an overall top-100 list. La Sexorcisto for White Zombie, huh? Portrait of an American Family for Marilyn Manson? What?

Maybe it's just the people I've been around, but there are a number of bands on here I don't think I know anyone who listens to them. Like Life of Agony. Or Sleep or Meshugguh. No one listens to those bands. Zero people listen to them. That is a fact. I've never heard of Converge. What the fuck is that? It's nothing that's what. Take away all these bands and replace with Paradise Lost and Desultory. The list would improve tenfold.

Converge is an amazing band. Just pure carnage. I don't think they're that unknown or anything.

I'm familiar with all of the bands on the list, insofar as I've at least heard of them. Life of Agony is actually a pretty big deal in the hardcore scene (I think). And that's probably the fundamental flaw in the list...bands who really aren't metal being included.

But whatever. It was actually a solid list with countless awesome albums. Nothing to get upset about.

Is this one of those stupid lists that puts British Steel over Sad Wings Of Destiny and Stained Class.

At the Rolling Stone writer's table, brainstorming for the list:

"You guys think we should include some power metal in the list?"

"Nah, man. We've got, like, six Maiden albums on there."

You guys are of course right, I should not be upset by a list such as this and John_Sunlight is probably right, I would need to be caned. However, what I find interesting is how much weight Rolling Stone still carries with bands/musicians. Having your album on one of their "7000 Records You must Hear Before You Spontaneously Combust" list or whatever is something that goes on to make up your bio, or at least your Wiki Facts. I came across this article because so many of my favorite bands were linking this on their Facebook.

This from TRIPTYKON's official;

"Lists are just lists. They simply represent an opinion and are frequently debatable, sometimes even utterly implausible. Having said that, it is of course a significant honour to find Celtic Frost's debut album "Morbid Tales" featured as number 28 of Rolling Stone magazine's "The 100 Greatest Metal Albums Of All Time".
I feel very doubtful as to whether we deserve to be included, as there are true metal giants in this list. But at the same time, it is hugely gratifying, particularly in light of the very humble beginnings of Celtic Frost as complete outcasts in the Swiss countryside of the early 1980s, and given that our own record company at the time had a very different view of our artistic endeavours."

I think that the bands feel that it's cool to be recognized by a name that big. It's still a list, but hey, someone thinks the stuff you've made in among the must-listen metal records, that can't be a bad feeling, right? Unless you're Fenriz, in which case you don't give a fuck, because you're listening to underground bands from Bolivia or something.

Anyways, the list was quite alright, until I got to the top half, I thought it would be one per band, but then it was Metallica/Maiden/Sabbath galore. I don't disagree, but it does have some strange inclusions. It's just a list. I don't care that much, but if someone was new to metal and did care, they could do a whole lot worse.

A Top 100 Metal list absent of Triumph's Rock And Roll Machine, Progressions of Power and Thunder Seven demonstrate a blatant lack of coherent objectivity at the subject. Rock And Roll Machine has - depending on the version - Progressive Metal(The City), Speed Metal(Street Fighter Man), Power Metal(The Blinding Light Show), Thrash Metal(New York City Streets Part 2) and Folk Metal(Bringing It On Home) all in '76/'77.
- And before anyone questions Triumph's Metal label, just listen to the title track Rock And Roll Machine. Not only does that song describe being in a mosh pit of a concert, it even has the lyric, "Fireball steamer, Heavy Metal screamer. Playing licks hotter than Hell!" when a sparse few referred to anything as HM and when even fewer referred to riffs or techniques as licks.

- Of course the song is not remembered for its lyrics or the super intense build up that leads into the solo and then back into the main motif of the song. It is notable for being the ONLY Metal song to feature that amount of double bass percussion in 1975, especially during that build-up section I mentioned. It was Tyrant before Tyrant, Exciter before Exciter, Sheer Heart Attack before Sheer Heart Attack or Ace of Spades before Ace of Spades. It might just rival Symptom of the Universe in speed, and title, as the true first ever Extreme Metal song since I do not believe the intensity or speed of this song was matched by any band during the entire 1970’s. It defines everything that originated in Metal from 1980 and forward...

- Case in point being what the song is mostly known for and that is the face melting solo to end all solos. Combining the speed of a Ritchie Blackmore with the dexterity of a Steve Howe or Uli Roth and riffs as heavy as Iommi and confident swagger of Jimmy Page, not to mention being a trained Jazz and Classical guitarist himself meant Rik Emmett had all the components to introduce 80's guitar fashion up to 5 years before the decade even started. This solo was Eruption before Eruption, likewise for Wrathchild, Painkiller, Speed Kills, Hit the Lights. It was Yngwie when he was still learning string name and chords, likewise with Michael Batio, Steve Vai, Jeff Hanneman, Dave Mustaine, Chuck Schuldiner, Criss Oliva, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, Hank Shermann, Mick Mars, Thomas Fischer and Max Cavalera. Or like 90% of all the guitarists on this list, especially when prominent names like Dave Murray, Eddie Van Halen along with every name listed above site the song as an influence.
- Lastly, most of that technically brilliant two-handed shredding solo that NO ONE has been able to transcribe in the 39 years of its existence, was recorded using the top 12 string neck of a double neck guitar. Yes, Rik Emmett shreds his ass off on a 12 string, if anyone needed further proof of his Guitar god abilities that should do it.

- Progressions of Power? For that last word alone, the Power. Most of Rik's other great solos were found here, like I Live for the Weekend, Nature's Child, Hard Road and Tear the Roof Off. PofP also demonstrates just how eclectic and brilliant Rik Emmett is since he puts forth a song in the middle of a proto-thrash record that sounds like the Carpenters (?) and concludes it with a blistering Metal anthem. Moreover, he ends the album only after an interlude that flawlessly shifts between, no shit here, Ragtime, Classical, Soul, Bluegrass and Flamenco in less than two minutes with Fingertalkin'. To me, this is one of the greatest acoustic guitar interludes in all of music, Metal or otherwise, and is further proof the editors of this list are intellectually bankrupt on the subject.

- Thunder Seven? Far and away, the bleakest, most solemn and disheartening album by Triumph, which is peculiar when the leading single is about positive belief and youthful perseverance with the thunderous upbeat Follow Your Heart.
- However, from its amazingly vibrant but morbid cover art to the pessimistic song titles of mass destruction (Little Boy Blues), carnal slavery (Spellbound), detachment (Stranger In A Strange Land), meaninglessness (Rock Out, Roll On) with lyrics that tell an ever depressing tale of slow death in a inconsequential existence where time dictates how much one has, and subsequently losses. Combine that with music just polished enough yet still heavy and morose enough to go with the intricate and technically efficient material makes Thunder Seven utterly melancholic and the least comfortable album that I enjoy or love by any band. However it is so infectiously memorable and a gem of perfect balance between catchy and heavy, something rare in the Power or Prog genres of Metal even for 1984. All of the albums deep cuts, Rock Out Roll On and the morbid stare down of immortality that is the mini-concept of time in songs 5-8, Time Goes By, Midsummer’s Daydream, Time Canon, Killing Time, are just brilliant pieces of concise but still defiantly Prog yet unquestionably Heavy Metal. Little Boy Blues is an incredibly depressing climax with its overbearing and heart wrenching guitar solo is.
- Oh yeah, it is also the first full-fledged concept album by any band whose ever been associated as Metal, in any era or generation.

Also, nothing on the list from Arjen Lucassen? No Universal Migrator 2: Flight of the Migrator or 01011001? No Into the Electric Castle or Theory Of Everything? No Victims of the Modern Age?

Not a great list, but honestly a lot better than I'd generally expect from them. Pretty sad what happened to them, really. Once considered the voice of the counter culture and now they put Justin Bieber on the cover. Was really cool to see stuff like Kyuss and Neurosis on there, wasn't expecting that. Some pretty stupid picks as well, but Evanescence was the only one where I was like are you fucking kidding me, bro? The ordering is pretty stupid, but oh well. Not sure how many people care about a Rolling Stone list in 2017, anyway.
