A lot of Finnish death metal like Demigod and Adramelech always make me think about this kinda thing. Timeghoul too. Experimental metal can be produced in a very deliberate way, with various genre blends, completely absurd song structure and in your face dissonance/atonality. I like a lot of that but I wanna check out some more subtly abstract, nuance-y stuff like those bands up there, and some other I can think of: Ripping Corpse, Thantifaxath, Phlebotomized, Thergothon, Confessor, Horrendous, Ulcerate, Gris, Coroner's album Grin, Cobalt, Lurker of Chalice, Fleurety, Flourishing

Except maybe Phlebotomized, I feel like these artists take their genre and present in a totally unique way, but it's not really "avant-garde metal". Obscura by Gorguts doesn't fuse in other weird styles, but it's still too off the charts experimental than I'm looking for (I love it though). Same could be said for other big names like Deathspell Omega, Portal, and Blut aus Nord. I want casual experimentations and writing a bit more toned down than those.

I like most metal genres but as you can see I couldn't think of any more traditional style heavy metal that would fit the bill.

If you don't know Obliteration, that's pretty mandatory if you like Horrendous. Same with Morbus Chron and Diskord. All Autopsy-inspired death metal, with all the characteristic weirdness and stuff.

Diskord is pretty amazing

Anata for sure. One of the very few modern technical death metal bands that truly have their own distinctive sound. I think a huge part of it is that each track can stand as individual songs; accessible yet highly adventurous and experimental.

I've been binging on Unholy, that is some quality music. Gotta get around to Anata

Speaking of Unholy, you might dig Umbra Nihil. Another trippy act from the Finnish doom scene.

You might want to check out, if you don"t already know them, Afficted's first album, and Comecon's 2nd, both from Sweden.
Cool you like Diskord, they're amazing.

Spectral Incursion is defining experimental-trad to me. Doesn't really remind me of any band in particular, kind of a macabre distant sound, progressive songwriting, and riffing that doesn't show a preference for any particular metal sub-genre.

I was just thinking the other day about how Melvins is kind of like this. They aren't really considered an "experimental" band but in my opinion they experiment quite a bit.

Hate to bring up the obvious but Swallowed fits this if you haven't already heard them. Lunarterial is nutty.

Artificial Brain - It's Gorguts inspired tech death alright but I think they have lots of other cool stuff as well.
Benighted - Talking exclusively about the Asylum Cave album, it's deathgrind with experimental tangents, unpredictable yet coherent.
Young & in the Way - An interesting mix of black metal/crust/hardcore along with a dash of rock star theatrics.
Kunstzone - Legit industrial death metal without the cheap techno sounding bs
Entheos - Modern tech death with a unique sound
Vhol - Haven't heard much tbh but it sounds modern and old school at the same time, yeah I don't know!
The Red Chord - Early deathcore with grind/mathcore elements, no played out cliches here

I'd say (Arch era) Fates Warning would fit. They basically started out as a Maiden clone, then got somewhat weird on the second album, then really weird and unique on "Awaken the Guardian" - however, the style can still be comfortably described as USPM, and I don't think they went for deliberate weirdness, but rather that that's just the way it came out.
