does this merit its own thread, or it's just the canon stuff?

I just watched it, and liked it. it's an action movie, with a daddy story, plenty of original trilogy references (and cameos), and some seriously awesome visual effects... I much prefered it, over TFA. mads mikkelsen was severely under-used, tho.

worth noting, the movie got some "bad" publicity, due to a tweet that was hijacked by "alt right" groups:
https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/neo-nazi-gr ... 38885.html
https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/disney-boss ... 55003.html

spoilers:
Spoiler: show
I didn't think disney would go that dark, but they did. everyone dies at the end.

there's a darth vader bit in the middle that I thought was just to please fans, ie it doesn't do anything plot-wise. but he's redeemed at the end, in a very Vader way.

the movie stops one hyperdrive jump before the beginning of a new hope.

What do you mean "the canon stuff"? This movie is canon...

Seeing it Friday so I can't contribute anything else. Can't wait to see Vader on screen again!

One of the local cinemas had misspelled it as "Rouge One" on the billboard. I wonder if it was on purpose by a disgruntled original trilogy fan.

Incredible film. Loved it. Up there with the original trilogy in terms of quality for me. I enjoyed The Force Awakens quite a bit but it felt too familiar and too samey at times. This is a completely different beast. Yes, it's set before the OT so there's a lot of nods and such, but it almost feels like a new world, a new mythology. Like we're learning something new about the Star Wars universe as opposed to TFA's familiar one. Can't praise it enough to be honest. Still hyped.

I was not very excited but the trailer let me hyped. It looks like its going to be a quite good film. Theoretically I was going to watch it with my friends this Saturday but they have to work, sh*t.

The only aspect of the expanded universe I missed was Grand Admiral Thrawn and Disney brought him back. Clone Emperor was cool too but hopefully that doesn't get recycled by the Mouse Braintrust.

I loved the original trilogy as a kid but after episodes I-III and The Force Awakens, my interest in Star Wars has pretty much completely dried up... I might catch this some time if a friend is hosting a movie night at their place or something, though I don't think I'll be rushing out to see it.

From what Ive been reading, it easily beats the prequels and its what TFA shouldve been.

Got home about an hour ago from this. In short: it's great. Easily miles ahead of the prequels and about on par with TFA for me (I enjoyed TFA).

Saying it's better than the prequels or on par with TFA could still mean it's worse than Turkish Star Wars.

It was a little slow in the beginning, for sure. It didn't feel like Star Wars for the first several scenes - it just felt like some space movie, which was my biggest fear. Then when it actually started to feel like Star Wars, it reminded me of the prequels more than anything. Once Yen's character was introduced, I felt like it picked up significantly.

Almost had a panic attack in the final 15 minutes, even though we already knew the outcome.

I suppose I'll be seeing this at some point over the next week or two, because it's Star Wars, but I'm honestly not that excited.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed that part in the first trailer where the protagonist says something shitty like "We have hope! Rebellions are built on hope!" and it cuts to a group of unimpressed rebels with one guy in the center quite visibly recoiling from douche-chills.

It breaks my heart to say this but...I was pretty disappointed by Rogue One.

Spoiler: show
Might as well put my post in spoiler tags so I can give my input on plot points and specific characters. Also let me preface everything by saying I'm a long-time Star Wars fan; adore the original trilogy, hate the prequels, mostly loved Episode VII while having some gripes with it. Rogue One essentially seemed to me like a big generic action movie with a Star Wars setting. That sounds pretty harsh, but it's basically how I feel. There were definitely some cool scenes and I thought it ended up tying into A New Hope very well (the ending is unquestionably the best part of the movie), but all in all it never really clicked on its own terms. I know that part of the appeal of the movie is that it's separate from the main saga and is unlike other Star Wars movies, but just because it's different than the other movies doesn't mean it's a good movie on its own. I think it's important that the Anthology Star Wars movies function as stand-alone movies while complementing aspects of the main series. Rogue One did the latter adequately well, but on its own it's strangely convoluted and honestly largely forgettable.

The first and foremost issue I have is with the new characters. While quite a lot of familiar faces end up appearing, the protagonists of the movie are all new, and every single one of them is one dimensional and therefore uninteresting. This really surprised me/disappointed me because I thought the best part of The Force Awakens was the new characters, namely Rey and Finn, who were both likable and engaging. I actually thought the movie took a bit of a dip when they team up with Han Solo and more classic characters begin to be introduced. The opposite is the case here. I wasn't invested at all with Jyn and the rest of the new faces and the best parts of the movie were when characters from other Star Wars movies briefly appeared or were mentioned. Thankfully they were more plentiful than I expected, but still hardly enough to carry the movie. Moff Tarkin was the biggest pleasant surprise for me. Not only was his CGI rendering deft, but his character was just as cold, calculating, and merciless as we remember from A New Hope. It was also cool that he didn't just have a one-off cameo, but was actually an important character who did important things. It's too bad they didn't have the balls to make him the main villain, because Krennic, who looked promising from the trailers, was just as one dimensional as the rest of the new characters. Same goes for Mads Mikkelson. What's the point of having a great actor if you're not going to use him at all? I was pretty baffled he didn't actually turn out to be an active character in the movie, since I expected he'd be one of the leads. When each of the new leads gets their own dramatic death scene towards the end I just didn't feel any investment.

Then there's Darth Vader, clearly the most important returning character, and thankfully he was mostly what he needed to be. His Isengard-type fortress was totally unexpected but a nice touch. I read that they got the idea for that from Empire Strikes Back concept art. That actual scene, though, his conversation with Krennic, wasn't really anything very memorable, and I think I actually groaned out loud at his terrible pun ("Careful not to chock on your aspirations" or whatever. Ugh, so bad). But then there was THAT scene he had at the end, which was as awesome as everyone is talking about. Seriously so cool, my jaw dropped. If only we had more moments like that in the film.

The last 15 minutes or so was the movie I was giddy to see. It really does lead into A New Hope beautifully and seamlessly, and it does feel like Star Wars for those few moments.

I know this is a pretty negative review, but there were things that I liked about the movie. The practical effects, costumes, and puppets were exceptional. It was cool to see a bunch of alien races from the original trilogy. I especially loved the Mon Calamari characters. It's just too bad all these neat little details didn't add up to a spectacular whole. Having said that, I look forward to seeing the movie again, and in 2D this time. Hopefully I enjoy it more or at least get something else out of it. I suppose my expectations were too high, but in my mind there was every reason to be optimistic: I loved Episode VII and the premise sounded like a great idea for a stand-alone Star Wars movie. It just didn't deliver like it should have. I'm not completely gutted as I probably would be if another one of the main saga movies sucked, but it really isn't a positive start for the Anthology films.

tl;dr - A large-scale generic action movie with a Star Wars setting. Forgettable main characters but also cool returning characters and a bunch of fun easter-eggs for established Star Wars fans. Ties into a A New Hope nicely.

"Careful not to chock on your aspirations"
Hey, well he's perhaps a sith lord but he's also a dad!

I think the movie was great and they pulled the challenge really well. Diego Luna and Felicity Jones were pretty damn good as the leads. Ben Mendelsohn was fantastic as always. Not enough Mads Mikkelsen, gimme more Mads!

And yeah:

Spoiler: show
Dat Vader scene could had been 30 minutes. He should had been on the beach killing all those damn rebels!

My thoughts, no spoilers.

Ok, here we go.

Rogue One. Star Wars. But not. This is the Star Wars movie I've been waiting for for almost 30 years. This was brilliant and amazing, sure there were a few flaws but they were minor at best aside from the music.

This movie works brilliantly as a segway to A New Hope. This was Star Wars but not, and that's what made it so great. While The Force Awakens crammed it down your throat that it was Star Wars, Rogue One did not. And that's why it succeeded.

It works as an independent film yet flows perfectly into the original trilogy. It did not feel forced one bit and they didn't cram too much camp and throwback in for fans. Sure there were easter eggs but they were tasteful and minimalist. A person who has never seen or heard of Star Wars could sit down and enjoy this, even if you hate the franchise you could still enjoy this. That is why this movie works.

It's completely independent of the franchise or the camp or the canon or anything. Yet it fits. It feels like Star Wars. It feels right. It's more than that though. It's like no time has passed since the 80's. This movie feels like it was done right after RotJ, it has that magic quality that the franchise has been unable to capture since then. It just goes. It's there, it's all it needed to be and it's a natural extension (if you will) of the story. It's exactly what it needed to be. Again that's why it worked. Because it works by itself without any need or warrant for it to be related to Star Wars.

Anyone who knows me knows how skeptical and passionate and down right crazy I am about Star Wars. This movie has earned my stamp of approval. If this is the new bar going forward then I have high hopes.

The beginning was bit choppy, but the rest of it was so good that it made up for whatever flaws existed in the first 20-30 minutes. The third act is, in my opinion, among the best in the series, and I'd argue the
Spoiler: show
space battle
was the best in the entire series. Also, the
Spoiler: show
Darth Vader scene at the end
was borderline orgasmic.

If you didn't like VII, you'll love it. If you did like VII, you'll love it. I myself loved VII, but while that was a "return-to-form", this is Star Wars jumping off into new territories. It managed to feel like Star Wars while also feeling like a war movie. Simply incredible.

I think if I ever have children, I'd show them "Rogue One" first. Firstly, because I think it actually opens the whole series better than the damn prequels and second, it would shoot down the 'people only like it because nostalgia' argument.

So where does Pierre Woodman's landmark trilogy saga Porn Wars fit in?

I was very disappointed. I pretty much agree with Razakel on all points. A few great scenes here and there, a few almost-laughs, but mainly just flat characters and half-assed plot points.

You know it's a problem when

Spoiler: show
everyone dies at the end and you really don't give a shit

People are praising the Asian dudes?? I had no idea why the characters were even there.

I totally disagree with Razakiel, I thought all the characters were well done, particularly Jyn and that general guy who Tarkin

Spoiler: show
essentially took the credit away from for the Death Star.

They were well-worn archetypes but I thought they were acted and written well in the confines of that. The movie wasn't the best I've seen this year, but it was solid. Good action, cool scenery and a cool story. It felt fresh and I think the Star Wars series has a lot of life left if it can keep turning out movies this good.

Agreed. But I fear that the actual "story episodes" will continue to suck. I think the individual movies like this and the upcoming Boba Fett one will continue to thrive though.

I thought Force Awakens was great and I think they can do plenty with the real 'story' episodes. I don't know what they'll do next but I'm optimistic.

Well I'm a pretty outspoken hater of Force Awakens so I'm very much doubtful VIII will be any good. Hell I went in to Rogue One expecting disappointment purely based on how much I hate TFA.

Yea, the characters in Rogue One needed a bit more of development, specially the supporting characters. But let's be fair, the characters in the OT had three movies to develop. Rogue one had 2 hours to cram it all in, and we pretty much knew they were all gonna die in the end.
