Figured y'all might like this. Some pretty rad video game music I cooked up a while back:

I enjoyed a decent chunk of Mirror's Edge's soundtrack. At times, the sparse melodies and chord progressions reminded me of the Chrono series, if the setting were modern and urban. Two examples:

I dig the remix of the menu theme, as well:

I've barely played the game and can't check out the soundtrack right now, but I recently discovered that the artist behind Solar Fields did this soundtrack. Tons of his stuff is on youtube, he's got a billion releases all of which are over an hour long, and all of it that I've heard so far has been fucking superb. Been listening to it a lot during recent FTL binges. Space themed ambient that morphs into more driven sounding techno and back again (though the ratio differs album to album).

This NU Music dude is making some incredible remixes of UT99 tracks. These all instantly went onto my mp3 player for the gym.

Anyone else a fan of the Nintendo era Metal Gear games (particularly the second one)? There are some pretty fucking badass remix versions of the intro theme - Zanzibar Breeze.

So the new DOOM soundtrack FUCKING RIPS...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNkQMtZAMAw

The ambient stuff is awesome as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUrJTP1i8t4

Listen around 1:25 of that track, it's one of many homages to the original Doom soundtrack. I had skin boners all over when I first heard it.

Not as awful and djenty as the other track I heard, but still kinda shit. Not surprised you'd like it then... ;)

I'm sure it's a fun soundtrack to play the game to, and they had to have known there was absolutely no way they were going to please fans of the older games' tunes. To me, it just sounds loud, boorish, and born of a million dials on some orchestrated mixing software without much thought put into mood.

Hell, this complete, unabashed aping of South of Heaven is much more pulse-pounding and puts you in a rhythm for slaughtering a gazillion demons with super shotgun, and to me, that's what Doom is about. :old: :old: :old: :old: :old: :old: :old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E7MPl4G2Qc

I absolutely love the new DooM soundtrack and couldn't imagine the game having anything else. I've listened to it probably 50 times by now, the sound design and cohesiveness of the overall aesthetic is very pleasing to me and I want more.

Final Fantasy Tactics has one of the best soundtracks in any game I've heard. It's one of the few STs that can make me feel a gamut of emotions on a whim.

Well, having played the demo now, I can say... actually, no, the OST still sucks ass. :( Pity, opportunities wasted...

Austin Wintory's score for the wonderfully atmospheric The Banner Saga is pretty grand. Beautiful Icelandic (I think?) wailing, strings and epic hornery causing major feels:

The Doom mod Back to Saturn X has an excellent soundtrack that's pretty unique among Doom mods--it's mostly spacey progressive rock with some metal and electronic music mixed in. I'd like to hear it performed by an actual prog rock band!

Michael Mancuso - Entering (Episode 1 MAP01)
James Paddock - Atomic (Episode 1 MAP31)
James Paddock - Heliotrope (Episode 1 MAP21)
Stuart Rynn - Alien Jungle (Episode 2 MAP01)
Michael Mancuso - Mystproj (Episode 2 MAP05)
James Paddock - Stormwater (Episode 2 MAP21)
Xaser Acheron - Angry Science (Episode 2 MAP26)

James Paddock and Stuart Rynn are great. Always look forward to hearing more of their work as I've enjoyed what I've experienced in my DooM career.

Been playing so much DW8 lately, and not only is it like the best game I've ever played, but it has the best soundtrack since 4. This track has been my favorite so far. It's been stuck in my head for a while, and I can't help but listen to it even when not playing the game. I love the bridge section about a minute and a half in, those ascending notes get me so pumped.

Those Battletoads tracks remind me of an F-Zero game I played as a kid. I always loved the soundtrack to that game:
https://youtu.be/nkf3kGQuvl8
https://youtu.be/kSkepu56w0I
https://youtu.be/hzUFPzWrCZA
https://youtu.be/o195MV8YpdM

Also, has anybody played Guilty Gear? That game had all kinds of cool metal references (characters named Testament, Slayer, Venom) The one I played had a really badass soundtrack:

https://youtu.be/8_vH1OsyCVY (This one's BADASS!!)

Well, this thread isn't that old . . .

I've been replaying the Metal Slug games, and it's occurred to me how incredible MS5's soundtrack is. I seriously struggle to think of any soundtrack that combines orchestra, synths, and crushing guitars this well. Like, seriously, this is just the character select.

This game has the most intense jungle music of pretty much any game. And the most intense water level music. And the most intense boss music. And the most intense sidescroller vehicle segment music. And the most intense spaghetti western music, because why not. Can you think of better music for fighting a robotic elephant tower that launches zombie maggots at you? I think not.

In the spirit of my favorite month of the year, I'm listening to "Haunted House" from the Tetris Battle Gaiden OST.

Best tetris game I've ever played (unless you count Tetris Attack, which is Tetris in name only).

Not sure if I've been in this topic yet, but here's a small sampling of some of my favorite game OSTs.

1. Snatcher, (fantastic eighties cyberpunk).
2. Streets Of Rage, (great early Genesis tunes).
3. Streets Of Rage 3, (hard techno-inspired beats and ultra-complex rhythms).
4. Mass Effect 2 (encapsulates the games bombast perfectly).
5. ThunderForce IV, (Heavy Metal: The Game).
6. Doom 2016, (distorted, electronic, crunchy metal insanity).
7. System Shock 2, (perfectly atmospheric drum'n bass and ambient tunes).
8. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, (somber, smooth, atmospheric ambience mixed in with futuristic battle tunes).
9. Mother Russia Bleeds, (perfectly creepy, droning, catchy synthwave to torture people to).

There's also a PC game where you play as a giant two-legged drone that's stuck on a cyberpunk planet, alone that has really incredible synthwave. It came out some time in the last year or so and the name of it is failing me.

Ugh yes, Mass Effect 2 OST was the best. The Suicide Mission suite in particular is honestly one of my favorite songs period.

Speaking of ME music, I got to meet and hang out with Sam Hulick, one of the composers of the Mass Effect series, (who is also from Chicago) while I visited there a few years ago. He's since moved to LA, though. But it was awesome getting to chill with an industry legend and talk about music stuff.

Streets Of Rage 2 is considered the "best" and I would agree in some capacity, but I appreciate the crunchy audio gymnastics of Streets Of Rage 3 via Motohiro Kawashima.

"Fuze", "Spinning Machine", "Boss", "Bulldozer" and "Shinobi Reverse" are all fantastic tracks. Like goddamn, son.

Also reposting this because Mother Russia Bleeds is probably the best original synthwave soundtrack for a videogame, ever. So creepy. [clicky]

Yeah that's pretty dope, nice post!

I like how it's more on the dark and brooding side. At least from what I've heard. Gives me ideas for my next track...

Split what? All the posts have been about videogame music from what I've seen? We're barely three pages in, I don't know if fracturing the discussion warrants the lower ebb and flow this topic appears to see.

Just my two cents since your post ended with a question.
