Alright, I guess I'll update their entry a bit.

Started in 1998. The band was blacklisted in 2013 by Doomsday, citing "no releases" as the reason, so maybe those demos are unreleased/bullshit. I've sent him a PM. Lineup: David Segerbäck (vocals), Ponta (guitars), Johan Hallander (bass), Anders Olsson (drums); past members: Jocke (guitars), Stefan (guitars), David Lichter (guitars)

Can probably be scratched off the list. According to David Segerbäck:
Quote:
I think we recorded two unfinished songs on a rehearsal, but there were no physical copies (and most songtitles were just ideas/lyrics that didn't become songs/had any music). I never had any recordings myself, and I handled the vocals. No recording was given to friends as far as I know. [..] We rehearsed some covers, but most members had completely wrong attitude and influences to perform death metal. I was not part in writing any lyrics or riffs for the band.
[..]
The info in the book most likely comes from an old homepage one of the guitarists made in school I think, it's more like his own ideas of a future recording that never became reality before the split. So it's just made up, and then the page was left as it was after he lost all interest in metal music and we lost contact, and no one knew how to take the old homepage down. Then Ekeroth accidently found the page... Maybe the guitarist did some midi-version on his computer or something and had more music that was never played by the band. Just guessing. We didn't rehearse on more than two songs + a few covers.

Hey Azmodes, just wanted to say thanks for locking my other thread (not being sarcastic) with the list of bands, and letting me know about the pop-up for blacklisted bands. That makes going through this much easier. I'll update this post in a moment when I've weeded out those bands.

EDIT: Non-blacklisted bands below.

This list is up-to-date as of its posting. If there are bands with the same name on the site, I can assure you these are different ones. I've added the albums they appear on in parenthesis for further identification help.

About 99% of these bands come from split albums with bands that are already on the site, hopefully that helps further with identifying them.

Spoiler: show
Altarium (2013 - Split Lp)
Aphorism (2014 - I)
Arborist (2012 - III Doom in Bloom)
Bestiary (2012 - III Doom in Bloom)
Cult of Linnaeus (2012 - III Doom in Bloom)
Devastating Sorrow (2010 - Grief Silhouette... Serenity Shade)
Divine Clarity (2014 - The Labyrinths of Cold)
Euthanized (2014 - Demo MMXIV)
Gates of Irkalla (2014 - Gates of Irkalla)
Lacerated (2010 - I)
Mistream (2012 - Into a Fortress (В Kрепости))
Mung (2006 - We Who Sleep)
Nekkral (2015 - Nekkral)
No Souls In Manchester (2010 - No Souls In Manchester)
Northrose (2014 - Timeless Predictions of Mass Galactic Extinction)
Skullflower (2010 - White Medal/Skullflower)
Xanctux (2010 - Darkside Pact)

Skullflower and Botanist aren't metal. Isn't Botanist blacklisted, though? The III Doom in Bloom split has 7 bands, so it's not an acceptable release here. So, Arborist, Bestiary, and Cult of Linnaeous are out unless they have other releases.

2. Faith of Religion
3. Dead by Faith
4. World in Chaos and Fire
5. Experimental Desires by Death

Not mentioned directly, but through a later version, Annihilation on page 309. Ekeroth lists the demo above for Annihilation, but the cover art on MA had the name Redrum on it, as well the notes saying "First demo, very bad sound quality. By this time Annihilation were called Redrum." So I deleted it and am now wondering how and if it was released.

Annihilation was added by a band member, so maybe he didn't know to submit Redrum under its own page? The band's old website was at http://annihilation.vze.com/, but it's not saved on the Internet Archive. vze.com is a redirection service, so the site's real url might be on there somewhere, but I can't find it. I went through the related bands' link sections and came up with nothing. Well, I did find a band to add.

Thank you for the new thread title, by the way. It's much, much better now. I disliked the old one but I couldn't think of a better one. I fixed the first post a bit, let me know if I can make it any better.

Yep, Botanist are blacklisted for a lack of metal riffs.

Nice OP, Halloween.

I must've misspelled Botanist's name when I was seeing if they were blacklisted, noted. I'll remove them from the list.

Skullflower just a noise band then?

Azmodes wrote:

Any other reason? I feel like that's a bit broad and a good amount of bands fall under that category (namely atmospheric/funeral/avant-garde).

I'm listening to them now, and they're certainly weird, and likely non-metal, but aside from 'lack of riffs', I can't really pinpoint (1. what they are, and 2) why it's not some subgenre of metal. It's tagged as avant-garde post-black.

That's a discussion for another thread. If you are wondering about the why's of a blacklisting, please post there.

Regarding Harmageddon from Uppsala, still no CD rip, but I came across this. Useful biography (they shortened their name to Harma) and even four tracks for listening! Pretty sure the first two are from their later period, some dodgy sort of groove metal, but the last two are death/thrash, so they're most probably from the demo-tape (or at least from that period, considering the differing production). Added.

The rockdetector link for Somber mentions one of the members later forming this band and releasing "A Dream" describing it as gothic doom. A review I found says it's doom metal or dark rock and compares it to Type O Negative and Bay Laurel. I'm not confident that this would be enough to submit it, but maybe there are samples out there somewhere. Damn these common band/album names, makes googling rough.

http://www.rockdetector.com/artist/swed ... olm/somber

Look what I found. Gothic/doom metal indeed. This seems cool to submit, if you want to.

EDIT: Also found Somber's demos on soundcloud, where was my head when I was researching these bands?

Here's another band. Maybe someone here knows more about it.

Forlorn (France, black metal)
Lathspell (Tape, 2014, Hypogea Maleficare)
Side Alpha:
1. Cainite
2. Cainite Part 2
3. Cainite Part 1 & 2
4. Fils De Caien
5. Cainite
6. Freeze World
7. War Spirit
8. Strange Dream
Side Omega:
9. Apocalypse With Cain
10. Warspirit
11. Alone
12. Apocalypse With Cain
13. Warspirit

This is pre-Aryos, so I don't doubt it being black metal. The discogs page however lists it as unofficial. The page is a mess, though. The owner of the label is the second contributor, Saturn156, who created the mess with vandalism and is also a known bootlegger. Aryos's facebook doesn't mention this release, either. It's probably unofficial or at least disputed, which would explain the vandalism, but might be worth looking into.

It exists at least:

I sent that user an email (address still worked!) and he confirmed the release status of the first demo (he's estimating 100-200 CD's), so I'm going to add it now. Sadly, he can't send me any pics or cover scans, he said their drummer catalogued that sort of stuff, but they haven't been in touched for years.

Peppermynte Gymsokk (Norway, melodic death/black/thrash metal?)
Pre-She Said Destroy, according to their MA entry, they released two demos under that name. The band confirms that they released "a couple of demos" under that name in an interview. Metalness shouldn't really be an issue here, but more details about those demos would be great.

No releases. Ferrum Noricum (Austria, pagan/black metal)
- Treasury of Styrian Merits (2007/08?)
I've been sitting on this one for a while. I'm assuming these guys are from Styria, based on the album title and the Styrian coat of arms on the relatively empty Myspace page. And it's really just that one page online, maybe there used to be some bio on there, but since they wiped all that... Also not available on IA. There are six reasonably well-made songs of pagan/black metal on there, grouped as a sort of release. Three are dated from 2007, three from 2008, so maybe it's really just a collection of recordings (and indeed, production seems to differ). Or maybe there were two demos.

The band name makes it somewhat hard to google, "ferrum" is Latin for "iron" and "Noricum" was a Roman province covering most of what is now Austria and parts of Slovenia. It denotes a sort of steel from back then. You can imagine that it's not unusual to see it used online, locally, for usernames or websites about old swords or whatever. I haven't been able to find any results that refer to the band, except the Myspace page.

This guy might have played in it? Google translate sucks and I don't know German:

I found some other mentions, one says something about Krems and that guy is from Krems:

Ah, nice one. That band is split-up since last year, but I've contacted them nonetheless.

Yeah, seems Ferrum Noricum might be from Lower Austria rather than Styria. It's an interview with the vocalist/guitarist from Vienna black/speed metal band Ewig Frost; he mentions a concert he's co-organising and that FN are also playing there. Nothing more about them. That guy also played in Katjuscha, by the way.

Halloween wrote:

These are all about a gig where they played as a support. It also confirms that they were from Krems an der Donau. That's the gig, but goddamnit it's a dead end.

But hey, already an improvement over a single Myspace page without context. I love this thread! :)

EDIT: Ooooh, by combining the name with the Katjuscha bass player, I was able to find this guestbook entry. It gives the sound and lineup:
Translation wrote:
Music: Noric metal (mix of black and viking metal)
Musicians: Karin: drums
Ralph: guitars
Steve: "vocals"
Mattl: bass

The rest is just meaningless promo stuff.

I googled his full name and just Matthias, but not that one, haha. Nice find, though. I was looking through old myspace profiles of bands that their myspace was friends wiith for that.

Could try contacting Ewig Frost, too. Nino is bound to know something.

EDIT: Just got a chance to go through those links, the page for the gig is hilarious. The other bands have info but the one we are looking for is just a name, like it's sitting there mocking us.

That guestbook is also from Approxx, nothing really saved for their old website, though:

So I sent Beaten to Death a message, the ex-SSD vocalist is with them. He said he'd never heard of that absurd name and when I linked him to the interview, he said that it was just a joke. Some kind of whitewashing? Maybe, maybe not. I noticed that the interview says that they had a couple of demos under the old name, then changed it in 2003 and released Armageddon, Anyone?. The MA page lists two demos before that one, though, and if the uploaded covers are to be believed, they were released under the name SSD. I'm leaning towards it indeed being a joke.

"She said destroy has been playing in different forms and under different names since the year 2000."

There's this, but they could be talking about the different aliases (?) they mentioned above and the line-up changes they mention in later versions of the biography. Other than that, I haven't found any other mentions of a previous name anywhere else on their old site.

So Ferrum Noricum is off. Mattl said they split up before getting a chance to do a proper demo or anything. :(

At least now I have peace of mind.

I'm surprised. Those tracks on myspace are really good. I would have bought a copy, haha.

But yeah, one more mystery solved. I feel the same about loving this thread. It's good having more than one head looking at something like this.

At least Katjuscha's page benefited

Not metal. Hexagon (Austria, heavy metal/hard rock?)
- Heavy Metal / Cryin' in the Night (1983, 7'' single)
Release checks out, but I'm not really entirely positive about the music. Selection of links, some in German:
http://www.austrorock.at/plattenreview/ ... xagon.html
http://www.discogs.com/Hexagon-Heavy-Me ... se/6102784 (tagged as heavy metal)
https://www.musik-sammler.de/media/478835 (tagged as hard rock (metal); m-s.de has "hard rock" for both the metal and rock categories, it could be rock or rockish metal)
http://liquidlunch.at/gary.htm (singer Gerhard Schulmeister's bio section on his current band's website (Liquid Lunch); no mention of their sound)
http://www.rootsvinylguide.com/ebay_ite ... l-7-listen (described as "melodic metal/AOR")

I found a snippet of the B-side, borderline, but then again the B-sides were often softer than the A-sides. About the only other thing I have is that the A-side is titled "Heavy Metal"...

I've been trying for a while now to get in touch with Gerhard Schulmeister and while he finally responded to my pokings many months ago, he has yet to answer the list of questions I sent his way. :( Sent a Discogs owner a message as well.

Added.Gypsy (Austria, heavy metal/hard rock?)
- Look in Your Eyes / Feel the Force (1982, 7'' single)
Again, the single is legit, but no music.

Heavy metal: http://www.discogs.com/Gypsy-Look-In-Yo ... se/6429446 (one of the owners also owns the Hexagon single, I contacted him a few days ago, no response so far)
Heavy metal: https://www.musik-sammler.de/media/647805 (might try my luck with the two owners there)
Also appeared with a third song "Keep on Truckin'" on a 1981 sampler: http://www.sra.at/record/4198 (Next time I visit their physical archive, I can pick up the copy they apparently have)
I also have a book from 1989, Austro-Rock-Lexikon, that lists the band and the single and calls them hard rock (but as usual, considering the time and the interchangeability of hard rock and heavy metal it's not really very helpful; however, it should be noted that the book also sometimes uses "heavy metal")

Other info: from Vienna; lineup: Kurt Kreissler (bass), Steve Binder (guitars), Wolf(gang) Rehor (drums), Anzo Morawitz (vocals); Morawitz was also in Joy, Stonehenge and Indigo

Added.Hardly to Touch (Austria, heavy metal/hard rock?)
- Twilight / Darkness in Your Eyes (1988, 7'' single, SBF Records)
This one is probably more like AOR with some metal influences (but goddamn, some songs are iffy). The only samples available are live recordings of varying quality, so I figured I'd post this here in case someone can unearth actual studio samples.

Single:
A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZVWZw0OmNE
B: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogapJ23csmo

Other songs here, no idea if they were released: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=U ... 6I1XKg7iSg (could try dropping this guy a line, might be the drummer?)

These guys were from Upper Austria (one of the videos is even from a popular club in my hometown!); lineup: Manfred Standfest (vocals), Gerald Wiesenecker (guitars), Robert Hartl (bass), Gerhard Lanuz (keyboards), no drummer mentioned.

I've received the Hexagon single in digital form from Schulmeister. Sadly, it's not metal. As mentioned, the B-side is borderline at best; the A-side -evidently screaming blatant lies into our faces with its title- is poppy, bluesy rock, even softer than the B-side. Hrmpf.

Not metal. Empower (?, ?)
- Promo '99 (?, ?)
Maybe an unacceptable promo, impossible to tell.
https://www.facebook.com/Knochenwerk/ph ... =3&theater

Intire/Intyre? (?, ?)
- Flight from Reality (?, ?)
https://www.facebook.com/Knochenwerk/ph ... =3&theater

In Memory Of (?, ?)
- Submarine Echos (?, ?)
https://www.facebook.com/Knochenwerk/ph ... =3&theater

As you can see, these are all from the same list, a page titled "Bonemachine" on Facebook. It's by Alexander "Hugin" Wieser (ex. Uruk-Hai), Bonemachine was one of his projects (now B-Machina). I came across it after looking up info on the Austrian band Osiris (he had a copy for sale, but it's been sold :( ). I didn't check everything he has up, but if someone else wants to go through it, be my guest: https://www.facebook.com/Knochenwerk/ph ... tos_stream A lot is probably non-metal; electronic, ambient, industrial or folk or something (that possibility also applies to the five bands above). Additionaly, he's a bit sloppy when it comes to names and titles, so be alert.

Zieg Abuser (Switzerland, death/thrash metal?)
- Total Atom Zieg!! (2015, demo)
Recently added to musik-sammler.de. No other information. This might be a joke, besides, there's only one 3-minute track on there.

Maybe this is actually by one of the many bands already on MA, but I couldn't find anything after a quick search.

Maybe it's this?

http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Di ... ghts/93427

It says released under their previous name, Dismal. I can't make out the line-up other than possibly Something Michael on the second line, and there was a Michael in the band. I don't know. The address also says "Wien", I think?

So it's this band and maybe this was a promo that they changed the title of when it was released.

Nice nice, Detective DeathlessDolt. I found some more details about the Ekpyrosis album. Seems they self-released it in 2001 under that name. Then, after signing a label deal, they changed it and added two bonus tracks. I've added it as the parent entry and given After War a separate listing.

Will give Empower a listen. (why didn't I think to check SRA...?) EDIT: Yeah, doesn't sound predominantly metal, some kind of crossover thingy, heavy, but few actual riffs. The review you linked says to contact the guy for a copy, so it's public, but it also says that two of the four songs are re-recorded from the other, 3-song demo. So this one's not gonna fly for MA.

Yeah, I didn't think it was going to make it. At least the list was narrowed down a bit :) Here's another I've wondered about for years:

Dark Cove (black metal, United Kingdom)
- Dark Cove (CD/Tape?, 2000?)
1. Navigating Thee Seas of Wrath
2. Mackeral Voyage
3. Splintered Timbers
4. Dark Cove Inn
- Sunken Treasure (CD, 2001?)
1. Intro
2. Navigating Thee Seas of Wrath
3. Mackeral Voyage (Idiot Flutes)
4. Double Munsun
5. Marooned
6. Doom Has breached the Hull
7. The Killingh
8. Mad Jack Rat-Boon
9. Variations for Dog and Typewriter
10. Sunken Trunken

Website
Discography
Myspace (Samples)

I actually added this band a long time ago, one of my first submissions. It was later deleted because I listened to the sample again and was like what the fuck not metal and the fact that I thought the physical release/band was dubious. I think oneyoudontknow contacted the band and got info when he added the releases. They had a weird limitation and one was released on tape and CD. He might know more. The years and formats are from memory only. Might be 2001 and 2002.

Anyway, I later found more samples and they actually turned out to be metal. I'm not really sure if the release actually exists or not, though. I bought a copy but they never sent me it. I even asked beforehand if it was still available and I got a reply saying yes, but they never mailed it out or replied to further e-mails. Might have just been ripping a guy off 6-7 years after it was released, which is why I'm now posting it here.

From the Encyclopaedia of Australian Heavy Metal by Brian Giffin:

MCH wrote:
Absinthe Betrayed is a death metal band from the Barossa Valley in South Australia. After many local shows and a demo recording, they split up in January 2010.

Can't find anything online, demo may not even meet our standards, but nothing else is listed in their short entry.

Your Silent Avenue (gothic/doom metal[/darkwave?], Austria)
- Ascension of the Crestfallen (1997, demo-CD-R)
Mentioned in this Yahoo! group newsletter (ctrl+F for the band name), described as "17 min. of an excellent Doom". Archived list. Also listed in this collection(?) (under "Y"); the country given in both sources is Australia, but these guys are definitely from Austria (totally uncommon mix-up!). Unless there was another band with that name from Down Under? That would be a mighty coincidence, considering genre and year (see below).

I also found a review in a local magazine from 1997 (referenced here); no release title is given, just "tape". This may be the same as the above demo, dunno. Some translated descriptions: "three youngsters from Wolfsberg [Carinthia, Austria]", "with a drum machine, samples and DATs chock-full of plaintive strings [they are influenced by] Dead Can Dance and without a doubt My Dying Bride. Deeply sorrowful, melodic passages carried by subdued spoken word alternate with hefty mid-tempo arrangements and instrumentals", "YSA count themselves among the doom army and want nothing to do with gothic metal"; as well as a cited promo text: "[YSA] try to avoid the usual metal clichés with their mix of heavy guitar riffs and soulful avant-garde parts".

No member names, just that there's three and that they went through three drummers and three bass players before releasing this.

Sooo... release seems ok, but the music...

XIII (black metal, Greece?)
- Of Hate & Blood (2005, compilation, Illegal Angel Productions, Download)
12. In the Northern Twilight
- Possible demo
The layout for the comp. says that the track is from an upcoming demo on Illegal Angel Productions. Illegal Angel's website is just barely on IA, so no info can be found there. At least the track is some nice slower-paced black metal.

Black Forest (black metal, Ohio, United States)
- Heidenblut (2000, Download)
1. Amidst The Fury Of Battle
2. Nordlands Saga
3. Call Of The Black Forest
4. Fatherland
5. Wotan's Might
6. Winds Of The North
Line-up:
Raven: Vocals (lead), Guitars, Keyboards, Bass, Drum programming
Darkstorm: Guitars, Vocals (backing & clean), Bass
According to this interview, they were planning a demo. The demo was added to the Russian Black Forest's page with the title, "Heidenblut (Unreleased Version)", so it might not have ever been released. The interview references photographs of the band on the demo layout, so there was at least some sort of artwork for it made.

Fallen (death/doom metal?, Finland)
- Fallen (Late 90's-2000?, Tape)
Line-up:
Kalma
This is one I've been looking for for a long time and actually really want a copy or to just hear it. There is already a Fallen from Finland here, but I don't think it is the same one. They didn't start releasing music until 2007 and Kalma isn't in it.
I found it on this list.
"Fallen (Fin): s/t demo (atmospheric and melancholic suicide metal in the vein of MonumentuM/Katatonia with twisted melodies and deep dark clean vocals)"
It's probably metal, but with a description like that I am a bit hesitant. That list's descriptions are a bit iffy, as well. I've contacted Kalma and the Chanteloup guy, but haven't gotten any replies.

I've added Gypsy after checking out a track of theirs on a sampler (fsm agrees that it's acceptable) and talking to someone who owns/owned the single.
