If you live in or around the Lancaster, PA area, there's a store called Angry, Young & Poor. It's primarily a punk rock oriented store I guess, but they also specialize in metal as well. They have shirts, vinyls, CDs, and posters from Emperor, Slayer, Immortal, Burzum, Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth, etc.

Bull Moose Music is a pretty good chain in the northern New England area. I've been to both the Salem, NH and Portsmouth, NH locations and have found a few quality choices. They're basically what Newbury Comics was 10-15 years ago (only without a section dedicated to comics/magazines).

The Portsmouth location is pretty small and cramped, but the metal section is the first display you see when you walk in. I've mostly used it for digging through the horror movies and finding some cheap copies of stuff that isn't super underground but definitely not mainstream (like Fulci's classics, a good amount of Troma, and pretty much anything Anchor Bay or Blue Underground release).

The Salem store is pretty big. The metal section is off to the left and is a little larger than the Portsmouth store's but, oddly enough, not as in-depth. It's comparable to what you'd find at an FYE only without the plethora of nu-metal and glam bands jumbled in.

If anyone is in Lakewood, CO there's a cool little store called Chain Reaction Records; They specialize in metal and punk rock. It's a tiny place, but they have some cool and unique items. They have a Facebook page with store info.

Chiming in to add that the Rock Palace in Hampton, NH is a damn fine place to get patches and shirts. It's a little hole-in-the-wall shop by the arcades and casino and can be a little hard to find, but it's still a very solid place to check out if you're in the area. The only downsides are that it's seasonal (April-October, I believe) since it's beachfront and winter exists, and that there's a lot of ICP gear (but hey, whatever sells).

I'd like to know too. I want to get a few good shirts, and I don't like buying music related shirts over the internet. The sort of designs used on metal shirts can look great on a screen but look dreadful in real life.

The only shop I know is Clarity Records at 60 Pulteney Street, Adelaide. Never been there so I don't know the selection of metal, but there is metal there.

Anyone know of any shops around the Guildford/South London area?
Preferably in Surrey rather than London, trains are expensive.
Also around the Canterbury town centre, as I visit there often?
And manchester, as I will be at university there, hopefully?
Mjög takk.

Anyone from Rio out there? I could mention the following stores, along with their neighbourhoods, but I'm sure the list is incomplete:

  • Outside (Méier)
  • Underground (Bangu)
  • Live Rock (Realengo)
  • Rock'n'Roll (Barra da Tijuca)
  • Dark Lands (Tijuca)

If you make it to Manchester (best of luck) Vinyl Exchange will be the bane of your student loan!
I always make a trip there when I am back in town, their vinyl was a bit pricey last time I was there but the cd section was still full of bargains. The metal section also had a bit dedicated to extreme stuff to save sifting through all of the shit. Their alternative/indie selection used to have some decent noise rock stuff in it too.

There is also Piccadilly Records which deals in newer stuff as well they used to have a decent selection of metal though it was a bit more trendy.

There are a bunch of other decent stores but their metal selections were more hit and miss.

South Carolina: I live in Myrtle Beach. There's a store here called Kilgore Trout's that's all used CD's and records. I find something promising there from time to time, but very rarely. The best metal shopping experiences I've had in places nearby are Monster Music in Charleston, SC and Edward McKay's in Greensboro, NC. Wilmington NC has a couple small stores, but the influx of new stuff seems to be very slow.

Anyway, music's pretty much all I spend money on. If anyone in the area knows of somewhere cool, please let me know.

I don't think there's much in DC proper, but there's a great metal shop in Vienna, VA called Vienna Music Exchange. It's probably the best in the DC area if you're looking for metal, other shops in the area have been pretty hit or miss for me.

where is a good metal shop in Ocala Florida? The only decent metal I've found sold here is at the FYE or FYI store in the paddock mall and they barely have shit. Tell me anyone here lives in ocala.

any metal shop around NYC, Boston and Houston? my brother will be in those cities next month and I want him to get me some stuff...
I'm not looking for rare stuff (Heretic only exception), so, it doesn't need to be any specialized store... looking for some Metal Church, Thulcandra, Gruesome...
thanx!

Are there any good Metal shops in London these days? The ones I remember are all long gone (Metalhead - Carnaby Street/Camden, Resurrection Records - Camdem, Selectadisc - Berwick Street). There must be at least one, surely?

Pretty much all the dedicated stores died out years ago sadly.

I have found some decent metal in Reckless, Flashback, Rat though some of them can be a bit pricey. The remaining Music & Video Exchanges are always worth a look, you can find some great bargains and rarities from time to time especially when someone sells them a collection so always worth a look.

If you give a shit about punk/hardcore All Ages in Camden is great and is pretty good for grind.

When I was in LA, California, I've found a pretty good metal store there: Amoeba Music. And there are many others like Jacknife Records & Tapes, Wombleton Records, Fingerprints Music.

Looks like I'll be moving to Toronto for 6 months. Any good metal record shops there? And any good websites with metal concert listings for Toronto?

Seattle - Zion's Gate is the 'metal shop' but it is well overpriced and the employees are generally assholish. My favorite place for 2nd hand buys is Everyday Music, but there are a ton of shops that have a selection of various music like: Singles going steady (very cool store), Golden Oldies, Silver Platters (chain but they have some good stuff occasionally), Jive Time, Sonic Boom, Wall of Sound (definitely no metal/heavy stuff here generally, but a nice store). There's some others as well, but I only go to Everyday Music these days (and always find something good).

Check out some craft beer bars, there are some really kickass ones (stumbling monk, pinebox are my favorites but there are many more), you can find a (usually) updated list of metal/rock shows here http://www.nocleansinging.com/nw-metal-calendar/, Enjoy!

Chicago used to have Metal Haven but it closed going on about 5 years now (which I just realized and now am super bummed about again).

Nowadays, Reckless Records usually has a pretty decent selection of metal albums, but a good amount are second hand so it can be hit or miss. There was a stretch of a few months where I would go in there once every three or four weeks and pick up at least one worthwhile CD, but then followed that up with an equally long period of time where there was seemingly nothing new on the shelves.
