Their first two albums are pretty good. I haven't really followed them since Old Europa Death Chants. I waited a while for it to come out and was pretty disappointed. I don't really remember why other than thinking it was different from the albums. They do have some weird ambient work and really long intros/outros that don't really work for me. Maybe they went more down that path. I can't remember since that release came out years ago.

But anyway, yeah, if you like doom/death I'd give their first two a shot.

I'm a pretty big fan of Lacrimas Profundere's early work, so I hope this helps.

Considering how Memorandum is practically Anathema-worship, you'd best look into their second album, The Silent Enigma.

Celestial Season is pretty close as well.

Also, Serenades from Italy is pretty good.

Winteragain: That style is pretty hard to match. There aren't many bands that explored it. There are bands that are somewhat similar that I can recommend though. I would try Draconian (Swe) if you aren't already familiar with them. They are more into the gothic doom/death style and use more female vocals than Lacrimas Profundere but at least kinda similar to their earlier stuff.

Just had MDB - 'The Light at the End of the World' on a little while ago - seems like an album just about any death/doom fan would love. It's not as whiny as their clean-vocal-only albums and has awesomely clear production compared to their early stuff like 'As the Flower Withers.'

TheUnhinged, those are some great picks. Please do keep them coming. I remember now that Hearse had some of the dudes from GBK - and they do in fact sound like it. Gorement is classic and underrated. Eternal Darkness I don't think I'd heard before, but they sound fucking sick.

Anybody ever heard this Argentinian band called Pandemia? I just randomly found them on YouTube, pretty decent stuff. The production is fairly rough but not much worse than, say, 'AtFW'-era MDB.

I'm trying to find some bands that are similar in sound/atmosphere to the third Ahab album, if anyone can recommend me something I'd hugely appreciate it.

Hey guys, can anyone here shed some light on the differences in sound between the original and remastered versions of Esoteric's debut album? Because the difference in price between the two is rather steep... Are there any considerable differences to be found in the remaster?

I've only heard the first Ahab album (which is quite good, mind you). Is the third substantially different?

As far as general funeral doom recs, I won't insult you by assuming you're unfamiliar with Skepticism, Thergothon, Funeral (FIN), Mournful Congregation, Evoken, though just in case, those are all very much recommended. Evoken are in fact probably one of the best metal bands of any genre out there today.

@colin: Hell yeah! Good find.

Yeah man, the third album reminds me far more of a really slow and forlorn sounding Opeth honestly, it's a cool sound and i'm having issues finding other albums that sound similar. I'm a big funeral doom fan, but I can't really find anything that sounds overly similar to "The Giant".

Thorr's Hammer is good but i already have it,for womb im gonna need more listening to decide..Inverloch/Anhedonist and Ophis are not what im looking for, thery all have a kind of a sad tone i dont really like ,see,im looking for a very specific sound, think of it as swampy, evil, primitive, threatening, heavy, non poetic, you know, caveman stuff.

is there more funeral doom similar to Catacombs/Hierophant? If possible reduced use of synth, melodies are fine, but not the totally sad stuff like MC, nor the goth/bright ones which seem to be most common in this genre. Overall it should sound just dark, creepy, somehow menacing.

Disembowelment and some Tyranny come to my mind, but that's it.

Yeah... that's about it as far as I'm aware of that specific kind of sound. Other names are definitely not coming to mind.

Can anyone rec me utterly bleak, hopeless funeral death/doom like Evoken? I've recently got into the style and they're my favorite thus far. A couple pointers; I don't want clean singing, and I'd prefer to avoid keyboards but I can be flexible on that.

For melodic death/doom check out Mourning Beloveth. Somewhat MDB-ish, perhaps, but they have their own twist on the style.

For funeral doom/death, Aldebaran, Asunder, Oak - though these bands tend to be a tad bit dronier than Evoken.

They're not bad, but the mood isn't quite what I wanted. They're more melancholic where what I'm looking for is a band with Evoken's starkness and nihilism.

Try Esoteric's Metamorphogenesis in case you're not familiar with the band, for some of the more dynamic side of the band. If you want something that drags a bit more then listen to the following album, Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum.

Sorry to say I am familiar, actually listening through The Maniacal Vale at this moment, so length isn't a problem for me.

Catacombs is excellent. Tyranny is good, but the production is a little thin for my taste.

The sound as a whole is good, but the guitar tone seems very washed out. I don't know, it's just one of the things I'm picky about, haha
