I'm looking Bathory worship bands like Hunters Moon. I'm only interested in bands/albums that rip off the sounds of the first four Bathory albums. Thanks in advance!

(I apologize mods, I wanted to post this once more because my request got covered up by a bunch of Horna discussion. I appreciate the Horna suggestion btw.)

What are some bands/albums that sound like Sargeist's Let the Devil In? More specifically, I'm looking for something with similar production that also has lots of melody, with the same kind of melancholic atmosphere.

These might fit your taste:
Lunar Aurora - Weltengänger
Slechtvalk - At The Dawn Of War http://youtu.be/cPQ9xEylgac
Horna - Kohti Yhdeksän Nousua http://youtu.be/pXU6WiiEDqE
Kristallnacht - Warspirit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFMDBsSZ-eU&t=25m20s

Odd, I don't think the album is very melancholic apart from the opening track and a handful of other parts. It's mostly triumphant and joyous, in my opinion.

Sarkrista's The Acheronian Worship is musically similar, but it lacks the thick production of the Sargeist album. You could try Koldbrann's latest album Vertigo, as the guitars sound pretty multi-tracked there, but that band always has its trademark machinegun drums. It's also darker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y8ESHXZXZg (apparently they're also using my pet favourite guitar amp brand :P)

Sargeist is very similar to many Gorgoroth songs penned by Infernus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BoDlQr-EPE

This one (off Quantos) is the most like classic 90s Gorgoroth, but it sounds more modern because of the production.

Koldbrann's Moribund album was excellent, wouldn't really say it's similar to Sargeist though. Possibly Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult's - Hora Nocturna or anything by Plaga, but again a lot darker sound. Maybe more similar would be stuff like Baptism, Lutomysl, Mourning Forest, Sad, Sühnopfer, Maybe some Blodsrit or Cirith Gorgor (again)

Oh BTW I listened to some Acherontas again, it's pretty good stuff, but not the kind of thing to listen to while driving to work which is where way to much of my listening happens these days. I just need a heavy dose of metal to get me going in the morning!

Quite true, even compared to Vertigo, but none of those bands have anything that's produced like the Sargeist album (to my knowledge - Blodsrit might do, but I haven't bothered with too many of their albums).

Yeah, I was going more off the sound than production... Most of those have decent enough production though I think. Mid-Later Lutomysl and Cirith were fairly clear, maybe not as extremely polished. Also really looking forward to hearing this whole Rituals of a Blasphemer album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0iCNNZxoPs Only heard a couple samples and waiting for the guy to send me a copy. His Unhuman Disease and Forbidden Eye projects are both stellar as well, but "Rituals" sounds more like the dirtier kind of Sargeist.

I've heard most of the new and upcoming Sarkrista stuff and it's a lot better than their debut both musically and production wise. They posted a couple samples online I think of probably their tamest upcoming songs, definitely worth checking out when they are released. Also give Blodsrit a shot Helveteshymner is a killer album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he7eVqHrTaw

Pretty sure I've brought up this band several times and generally won't shut up about 'em, but goddamn that Kuilu Haudalla/Virta EP is fantastic stuff.

I've also really been enjoying the Shores of Ladon album, though I'm keen to hear a full-length of all new material as the debut is mostly (entirely?) re-recorded demo/EP tracks.

Fantastic! The debut was good, but not spectacular. If they'e upped their game, it's probably going to be a spectacle.

I listened to a bunch of Blodsrit albums something like a year and a half ago, and none of them grabbed me much. In fact I though they got progressively worse, culminating at Hinterland, where I gave up.

Yeah Hinterland was a weird album and I haven't heard the latest one, but everything before that was pretty good and the rerecording of their first album was great. I think Sarkrista are doing 3 splits and a vinyl EP, I've already heard 9 new unmastered tracks, I put them all on one CD and it sounds like a kick ass album. Will be a little different listening to a few songs at a time as they are released, but the guitar sound is a lot thicker and songs have a wider variety of riffs and progression. I got a bit of an insider connection you could say :)

Hmmm I wonder if we have the same connection (Revenant emailed me a while back wanting me to review the album in the first place)? I bet I could bug him and hear this pre-release stuff but for some reason I like to wait until things are properly released rather than listen to pre-release promo stuff, especially with unfinished production.

Well I've been talking to him on and off for awhile about lots of stuff, mostly black metal related. He's told me about a few awesome bands I had never heard of and I made him aware of some as well. Extremely cool dude

I'm looking for some black metal on the more melodic and epic side, but still has a very raw edge to it. Stuff along the lines of early Taake and Sacramentum's first album, stuff like At The Heart of Winter is too glossy for what I'm looking for right now.

After listening to that new Kriegsmaschine a bunch of times I'm still left rather disappointed by it. Darkside's drum performance is fucking phenomenal and captivating throughout the entire album's running time, with loads of tribal-ish toms and lightning-fast cymbal patterns. Super busy but it always has a huge groove going so never comes across as wank. M.'s vocals are also cool as hell, doing that whole DMDS meets beanie era Tom Warrior thing with nicely blended takes. It's just the guitars are so same-y, with those droning arpeggios utterly dominating the riffing style to the point where there are like zero powerchord riffs and extremely sparse tremolo to break up the ever-present hypnotic minimalism that it kind of gets tiresome. It's also sort of a shame that M. handled the bass on this and has it just playing a really minimal support role, because Destroyer's bass-ing was definitely a standout on the last Kriegsmaschine album.

I just don't get Kriegsmaschine at all. Aside fro the drumming, everything I've heard from them is "eh" at best. In a perfect world there would just be more Mgla.

Probably a little late, but I think the reason you didn't get a lot of responses is because it's difficult to find something that sounds like early Bathory that isn't early Bathory... Aside from some obvious stuff like Darkthrone and some Horna. Possibly Ravencult and the new Zorn album may work. Other than that I'm kind of still drawing a big blank. Oh yeah that last song on Flagellant - Maledictum sounds like an old school Bathory song, but the rest of the album doesn't.

I'm a big fan of both Graveland/Thor's Hammer/Capricornus and Anextiomarus' new Infernum so don't care who claims what but I can't believe anyone would call Farewell their best effort?! I didn't even like it myself.

Right off the top of my head there's Power from Hell, who have an 6-minute tribue track/medley called In Memory of Bathory on their third album which uses a bunch of riffs from early Bathory albums. Perversor is a bit grittier but also quite similar to Bathory's debut. There's also Midnight, although I'd probably say they're more of a Venom worship band they're still worth checking out. But anyway, I think Power from Hell is your best bet.

I don't see what's strange about prefering Farewell to The Curse... it's better written album further exploring the medieval atmosphere found in small pieces on Taur Nu Fuin.

Well I guess someone gave Absurd's God's Death demo a review of 0% too while I loved it. I suppose tastes differ and the same goes for these albums.

Seeing as how Deep-pression has collaborated with a number of "high profile musicians" and has very few reviews on the site, does anyone actually recommend anything by them?

Indeed they do differ. I simply find The Curse as bad album that was never properly finished as Anextiomarus suddenly killed himself. The song Epitaph that is featured for his memory is the true low point and it's just a weak Mayhem ripoff. Why are those guys still keeping the band alive? Farewell was also at least done in the 90's apart for keyboards and vocals.

Absurd demos are also great but in different sense.

I really like slow-mid paced Black Metal with clean singing vocals like Absurd uses on their early demo's and debut album: http://youtu.be/rM6biTKLO8E

Also Nitberg uses similar vocals on their Nitsanger EP: http://youtu.be/Y300nVB9kaA

Infernum's song "Pagan" from their album "The Curse":

The singing on Urfaust - Die Kalte Teufelsfaust (Geist Ist Teufel):

Seems to be hard to find anything like this especially in full length but let me know if anything comes to mind!

Anything like the album Enthroned Darkness Triumphant by DM? You know, plenty of uplifting, epic tremolo picking riffs, melancholic keyboards, and a clear, polished production (this one is not important, if it's clear and loud, I'm satisfied)

Lunar Aurora was great! thanks

They're rather different from eachother but I really like their albums Mond, Ars Moriendi and Weltengänger. If you also like Weltengänger don't forget to check out the demo Auf Dunklen Schwingen, it's very good!

Ars Moriendi is probably my favourite Lunar Aurora album, together with Elixir of Sorrow and let's not forget Hoagascht, which features some of the best LA songs ever (though it doesn't hold up that well, and it's definitely different from every other album).

I'm also looking for Black Metal with clean Oi! vocals, does this exist?

Vargrimm's album has some clean vocals and the last Blood Red Fog album, there's more too but I would have to think. I hate clean vocals!
