Hi,

I hope it's not a duplicated thread.

Having 3 of them, and it's an absolutely amazing effect, the guitar "buzzaw" sound IMO makes the swedish death metal scene very uniqe. Any owners/users?

I have two of them and a couple of the Behringer clones. Sounds fucking amazing through my Peavey Transtube 2x12 + Carvin 4x12. It is something of a three-trick pony, though; it sounds great for tremolo, fast palm-muted chuggy riffs and sustained powerchords, but it starts kind of sounding like ass if you try to play full chords or arpeggios or faster non-muted powerchord riffs imo.

Got a japanese one from 86, damn that pedal is amazing. Got myself a behringer copy in case if I have a problem with the boss during a live show or something. But I look forward to get another japanese one and also a taiwanese to compare them. I think I'll even make a collection, haha!

I have a Jap made one. I love it and it was the soul reason I started doing Draug. and actually I got a great brittle black metal tone out of it on the first Vomitwolves ep. I actually ran it with no bass on the dirt channel of my ampeg with the gain on that turned about halfway. it was cold as fuck.

Man, I've been looking for one for a long time. Never used one but I've heard they are quite the pedal. Now this Behringer copy you say, what is it called? Maybe I'd be able to purchase that model much easily.

It's called the HM300, and I got mine for only about $25.

No way, that's pretty damn cheap. I'll have to enquire around. Thanks.

That's not true. They also have a very good sounding FZ-2 (i.e. Electric Wizard circa Dopethrone) clone. I also have their Metalzone clone and it...sounds like a Metalzone, so could maybe be good for certain things.

Neither of those honestly sound that great. There are far better fuzzes for an Electric Wizard sound. and anything that's a clone of a metalzone is basically saying you cloned dogshit.

The FZ-2 was pretty much 100% of E-Wiz's tone on Come My Fanatics... and Dopethrone. Like, if you just plug that pedal in and put it on the Fuzz 2 setting, it's instant E-Wiz. The fuzz tone on that channel is so overbearing and distinctive that I've tried it alongside all kinds of other stuff and it just utterly dominates the tone character.

I don't really like the Metalzone either but some people apparently do!

Anyway, my point is that the Behringer pedals, almost all of them being direct clones of more famous pedals, are mostly pretty neat so long as the pedal they're emulating is hard to find/expensive. They're not very durable (they're heavy plastic, not beefy metal construction like a Boss) but are a great way to be able to fuck around with really idiosyncratic sounds (or extremely close approximations, anyway) without having to shell out cash for vintage/expensive gear. Their non-pedal gear does suck pretty bad in my experience, though.

Yea some people also like garbage line 6. so there is no account for taste. If you don't like it and you know I don't like it don't even bother meantioning it.

And honestly I see what you are saying but You kinda just further proved my point correct.

Eh, the Behringer pedals overall sound just like what they are supposed to. I think I've mentioned it somewhere else on the forums, but I have 2 HM-2s, a HM300, and have used a couple other HM-2s for various things, and the HM300 I used sounded spot-on to the best sound hm-2 I used. In fact, i've had a bit of variance in quality among HM-2s themselves, so much so that it would lead me to believe the HM300 is on-par with the BOSS in terms of sound quality. As for components and build quality, definitely not in the same league. I would never gig or tour with an HM300. This assessment goes for pretty much any Behringer pedal I've compared to their original. The only one I felt was off enough to notice was their Ibanez TS9 copy.

As for sounds, I have been playing around with keeping the low and high knobs cranked, but turning the distortion knob all the way down. To my ears, this sounds like what Bloodbath does, especially listening to The Fathomless Mastery and their live set from Bloodstock. It still has the overall tone, but it has a throatiness to it, and it doesn't create the same level of oppressive feedback. In essence, this allows you to palm-mute and get more clarity out of your notes. It has its own vicious quality that I quite like, though to me, going the traditional balls-to-the-wall method still sounds best.

Those guys also used 100-watt Sound City amps, so no, the FZ-2 is definitely not instant E-Wiz. It'll get you started though, for sure.

I traded my HM-2 for a linear power boost pedal and a noise suppressor. I never really used the HM-2 for the heavy distortion, I just used it to add a little bit of grit to a clean boosted signal. Worked surprisingly well, but I've got different shit that does that now, only better.

Sounds pretty much exactly like E-Wiz to me when you crank that Fuzz 2 setting. So much so that it basically sounded the same that I couldn't really change the character of the tone much at all by using it in conjunction with other distortions or fucking with amp gain or using different amps. Shit, Warhorse even used the same pedal to get that tone and they were playing through cheapo Crate solid states.

But Warhorse doesn't sound like Electric Wizard. Not just their songs, their tones still sound vastly different. I had just listened to both this week, so it's not just looking back.

Also what are you using that pedal on? cause honestly I just doubt that single pedal is all solve to get that Electric Wizard tone otherwise you would have far more bands sounding like that. Even Dopethrone who worships EW doesn't sound tonewise like EW.

Well E-Wiz ditched that pedal AFAIK for later albums where they had the resources to get the tube heads they wanted for that kind of tube tone worship. Maybe Dopethrone are going for later Electric Wizard tone but I can't say one way or the other because I haven't heard them.

Have you listened to Lord of Doubts? More Electric Wizard worship, and they get the tone perfect.

I've played the pedal through a couple different amps but usually through a Peavey Transtube.

I don't think they were going more for a later EW tone since they are named after Dopethrone....

Haven't heard of LoD. I really don't care for EW sounding bands. Hell I mainly only like listening to EW's Dopethrone album. Occassionally I bother with other albums but its just not something that really thrills me. I like Cough which does a good nod to EW but not totally sucking them off.

I like my doom nastier. if I'm going for band to worship another band... there needs to me more like Buried At Sea and as good as them.

Amplitube 3 has a fake HM-2 that doesn't sound good at all.

I see, as I can remember I've once heard that some swedish OSDM bands used direct injection ? from the pedal into the mix ? that would sound really piercing, I wonder If anyone on the board has tried it or knows a band that used it :O

Amplitube has some nice sounds, the HM-2 version is not one of them. But blending 2 tones on Amplitube is the best way to go about it IMO.

Just adding to the FZ-2 debate slightly, my old band recorded this EP with an FZ-2 running through an Orange head, and a Behringer clone of it running through a Bogner Alchemist. Both sound very similar, and both sound very like Wizard.

Sorta but not spot on enough to weigh it's a plug and play type of pedal.

Yeah both of those heads have a ton of clean headroom, which helps that pedal shine through.

My current band uses the HM-2 as our backbone. I posted in the promotion forum but i'll put a link in here too. Let me know what you think about the tone. It's pretty different on both our releases.

To add to that list, Godflesh uses it for both bass and guitar, as far as I know.

Entombed eventually stopped using it afaik.
That left hand wrath pedal looks really cool but as i already have a hm2 i dont just want to randomly buy a fancy pedal that expensive without fiddling with it first.

I dunno when I saw Entombed live a couple years ago Alex was rocking that HM-2 Rotten Sound shirt and they were definitely using them.

Small question for the owners of the japanese version:

I've read somewhere that these pedals were designed for the old boss adapters, which were effectively 12V instead of 9. Thus the "lack of power" and low-glowing led when using a normal 9V adapter.
The thing is I do have an adapter that can go to 12V, but is it safe to use it for the hm-2? I'd hate to fry it, you know ^^
Also, I noticed that when it's plugged to a 9V adapter along with other pedals (I have the 1spot from Visual Sound, with a daisy chain), the led is glowing brightly as it should, so I guess it's operating normally. Would there be a difference if I plug it separately using my 12V adapter?

(I know this is quite easy to verify but again, I don't want to take any risks and damage the pedal, so I thought some of you might know about this ^^)

When used right, the HM-2 is absolutely great. Left Hand Path sounds so damn good, on vinyl especially. But it definitely doesn't fit everything, some kinds of riffs sound terrible through it. It's almost like you need to have a special mindset when writing music with it, or I think so at least.
