My buddy has expressed little interest in Dark Souls, but wants me to play Elder Scrolls Online with him once it releases. I agreed, under the condition that he got Dark Souls II. But now that I've watched about an hour's worth of trailers and gameplay for ESO, I'm incredibly underwhelmed and have very little interest in playing it. It looks no more interesting than every other MMO I've ever seen, nor any better or more unique than the other ES games, or Fallout 3/NV, all of which failed to interest me (Fallout 3 almost had me, though). I've been spoiled by Dark Souls combat. ESO's combat looks about as cool as a bunch of LARPers going at it with foam swords; every attack looks totally insignificant.

Now I got to break the news to him. Pity; I really wanted him to play DkS with me.

This also brings to mind a mostly unrelated point. Metal Gear Solid's gameplay hasn't aged the best, I don't think. The first two blew my mind when I was younger. After getting a few more stealth games under my belt, MGS (the series) is not nearly as immersive as other title's. Compared to Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, MGS 1 and 2 (I just started 3, and so far the gameplay is incredibly better than the first two; haven't gotten to 4 yet) feel like, well, games. I never feel like a bad ass agent/spy. I'm a toy in a playset. Dishonored and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay similarly put the stealth action in the MGS games (from what I've played) to shame. CoR doesn't have quite the gameplay polish that the other two titles have because it's also several years older, but it still holds up remarkably well.

How come even when Dark Souls has its own thread half of the posts here are somewhat Dark Souls related?

Because Dark Souls.

It's going to be horrible, a cash grab, just as The Old Republic was. They already put a playable race behind a pay wall for pete's sake. They know it's going to fail in the long run, and if the pre orders are anything to go by they will make all the money in the first couple of months, after which they will just half-ass any future content, and it will probably go free to play after that. It's exactly what happened to The Old Republic, and it is completely intended to work that way.

:( How depressing if this is true. But probably for the best. If they actually made this an awesome experience like Morrowind but with the added option of joining up with friends and some pvp, it would consume my life.

Hm? Isn't the whole thing subscription-based?

Initial cost of $60, $15 per month, and microtransactions. It's obvious they're trying to get as much money out of the game as possible because they spent way too much resources on it.

So the FFXIII-3 demo has finally been released, and I just got done playing through it. It is very short, unfortunately. I've finished FFXIII multiple times, and have only played the demo for the second one, and now have played the demo for this one. The changes made to the battle system are very welcome.

I beat XIII-1 at least once, I think I did enough post-game stuff to max out everyone's stats and kill those giant turtle / dinosaur things, then kind of forgot about the series.

But the Lightning Returns demo inspired me to pick up XIII-2 for cheap, and after putting many hours into it, I'd say it's a huge improvement over the first game. The maps are more than just straight lines, you can re-visit areas you've already been to, and your party mostly stays consistent. Not sure how close I am to beating the game, but it's already given me more enjoyment than XIII-1 did.

I'll probably buy Lightning Returns when the price drops a bit.

Haven't heard anything about this game before, but I like MetroidVania and it looks cool and has an 88 metacritic rating, so I'm considering.

This video shocked me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkFEDQaVxrE

Just in case this is too long didn't watch it.....

Basically tons of game videos were getting flagged for copyright. I think it's due to some crappy automated system for flagging. So AngryJoe, a game reviewer on youtube, got hit hard by this and tried to appeal.

Namco Bandai released their claim, which is comforting so we know Dark Souls isn't in greedy hands. SEGA also released their claim.

Some of the companies that released claims were shocking, since they are well known in being greedy. Starting at about 3:50

-Capcom
-EA  (I know shocking.)

And which game company is maintaining their claim? Square Enix. Hah wow.....

The companies weren't really behind that at all. It was YouTube's new flagging system that flagged all those things. Many game companies came out and were like, "hey, we're not trying to pull anything down. We had no part in that."

When making video reviews, it's required to use footage from the thing you're reviewing.

I played it hardcore for a pretty long time. Spoilers for wall-o'-text.

Spoiler: show
I stopped playing back in May of '13 for a number of reasons. First, I was getting laid off and it didn't seem like a good idea to be playing MMO while unemployed. Second, I realized that it was eating up all of my free time to the exclusion of my other hobbies. Finally, though, is that the game (the endgame, really) kept getting changed in annoying ways and the outlook for the future of the game, content-wise, wasn't looking too great. So I called it quits.

That said, it's a wonderful game.

Gameplay-wise it's really not too different from something like WoW - you've got different classes that specialize in different things, with skill bars you customize to use your array of skills. I will say that, unlike early WoW at least, they did a good job of giving each class fairly diverse build options and roles in group play. There's also an effort on some level to remain true to Tolkien lore; you can't play as a wizard and supposedly there isn't any real "magic" being performed by your characters (the one sort of cop-out/exception being the Runekeeper class). Instead you have things like hunters being the ranged mage-like class and minstrels healing with music. Group content is on a smaller scale than WoW, though - most quests on the landscape can be done solo and dungeons are for groups of 3, 6, 12 or in some rare cases, 24. They also added mounted combat recently that's sort of fun but apparently isn't going to be improved or added onto in future updates.

For Tolkien nerds, it's sort of a mixed bag but mostly pretty fucking excellent. The attention to detail in environments and art is astounding. I read this massive thread on the LotRO forums that some guy had started just after the Mines of Moria expansion came out that basically was a screenshot photo journey of the Fellowship's trek through Moria alongside the text from LotR; they even got details like stairway step counts exactly right. It's unbelievably immersive and the music is some of the best I've ever heard in videogame-dom. There are some concessions for gameplay reasons, of course, such as generally compressed distances (a walk from Bree to Rivendell might take a couple hours instead of weeks or whatever) and varying levels of liberties taken with the universe, most of which make a lot of sense and are sort of necessary evils but every once in a while there's something that's a bit harder to justify, but still I think it's the best videogame adaptation of Middle-Earth available.

A big draw is that there's a continuous series of "Epic" quests that serve as a main storyline that takes you all the way from your starting area to Bree and then all over the place, from Ered Luin to Angmar to Mirkwood to Moria and Rohan. These are really well-written and do a really cool job of making you feel like an important part of the Free Peoples' success against Sauron, yet without treading on the story as it was written by Tolkien. So, you're mostly doing stuff behind the scenes to ensure the Fellowship succeeds, rather than working directly with them, though of course they do get a fair bit of expository cameo appearances and stuff.

Last note: just recently a big expansion came out that supposedly did a major overhaul to some of the gameplay systems, and I can't really comment on those other than it seems like a pretty stupid move on Turbine's part as the game was far from broken before. I think it was simplified a bit, possibly in a bid to experiment with more console-friendly MMO controls. Could be a disaster, who knows. Anyway: if you just want to experience the story and all that, I can't recommend it enough, but at this point I wouldn't expect the endgame experience to be very satisfying.

If you're interested in playing let me know; I'm on the Silverlode server and can probably update the game and show you around a little bit if you want.

I beat Silent Hill 4 finally.

This game was amazing, but flawed in a few ways too.

The second half is somewhat of a glorified escort mission. Nobody ever likes those and so yeah, wasn't too fun here either. RUN... but your friendly AI has to stop and hit things. Or gets stuck. Wasn't bad, but is literally like half the game so it does get old and one thing I loved about the Silent Hill games prior to this, was being alone! (unlike RE which seemed plagued by buddy system syndrome).

The "apartment room" idea was really awesome, but having to go back to save the game every single time was kind of tedious. I think this would have been better if the levels were more traditionally done like the first three, with normal save points, but when you complete a level... then the game puts you back in the apartment automatically to observe and notice things.

These are the usual issues and they're kind of big, so it's hard to say the game is an absolute must play. But if these were fixed and all I think this could have seriously been the best one next to SH2. I never had an issue with the combat either and liked the new enemy types (ghosts aside), which seems like a complaint I see around sometimes and I'm not sure why.

It's Silent Hill, but a fresh take compared to the previous 3, and although the game does an amazing job at not explaining the unexplained (one of the many awesome uneasy elements to these games), it was neat how this one was a bit more detective, mystery/thriller, with pieces to the puzzle falling into place as you progress. The story was fantastic, the art direction is once again amazing, and the music was awesome. The atmosphere is absolutely top notch. I also could not believe how good this looked too, looks better than early 360/PS3 gen stuff.

So I did have to take a break (but this could be due to play the first three back to back almost prior to this one), and it has some flaws, but if you're a fan of the first few games or interested in this one, definitely check it out as the experience was totally worth it and it's pretty out there. Give it a chance.

Aside from the apartment concept, that game is bad. Half the game is an escort mission, environments are not even remotely scary, the story starts great but turns very stupid quickly. Not much enemy variety and they never feel threatening. Mandatory play for SH fans but you don't even have to finish it, you can just play until the escort mission and google the endings.

Actually you can kinda fudge that by just not giving her any weapons. She'll just run and stick closely with you if you do that. Yeah, the escorting is really fucking annoying though, especially with respawning Walter chasing you.

It's a shame because I think the core story is one of the best, second only to SH2 probably. The whole apartment mommy idea is so fucking nuts that it works perfectly. Unfortunately I found the gameplay to be utterly atrocious for the most part, worst combat in a SH game ever probably.

That sucks. I've been playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen a lot lately. Made a new character (needed an alt PSN account, good thing I already had one for extra Demon's/Dark Souls save slots >_>) and played on Hard, just got to Post-Game. What's your PSN ID? I could carry your pawn around if you like, give you some nice RC for when you get a fixed PS3. :)

SH4 is the only one I've played, as my old PS2 broke before I got around to playing the others. Would love to see an official PC port someday, I've always wanted to play the whole series.

I need to finish the Dark Arisen content. I'm probably about an hour or two away from doing it. But then I might fall into the Dragon's Dogma trap and start the cycle all over again.

On another note, I'm gearing up for a Castlevania marathon this weekend.

That about sums up my thoughts on SH4. Some of the horror elements were done nearly perfectly to induce fright. You cannot kill a ghost. Ever! You use the sword of obedience to hold the nastiest ones. And that's it. It had some of the scariest enemy encounters.

I'd say this was the last good Silent Hill. The newest one was a nice try but there was only one part that was scary. The Hanzel and Gretel puzzle. The rest had some good tension but not horror.

"Please don't make me do this" is what survival horror should make you think.

Fatal Frame 1 and 2 are on my backlog and I really need to try it sometime.

$800 for a PS3? Are you getting the gold-plated edition? o_O

I'm getting the tax-bucks plated edition ;^)

Thanks for the offer Morrigan, but I plan on making a new account once I get it.

On another note, I'm gearing up for a Castlevania marathon this weekend.

Which games are you including in this marathon?

I planned to start with the first NES Castlevania, play through the NES trilogy, move on to Super Castlevania IV, *maybe* Dracula X on SNES, Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood and then maybe Symphony of the Night (undecided if I'll do Saturn, PS1 or PSP) if time permits.

^Sounds like fun.

I need to finish Doom so I can play Heretic.

I am also itching to play Donkey Kong Country II (Diddy) once I order new cables for my SNES (my friend's dog chomped up my original ones :( ). It's my favorite of the three for sure, both Diddy and Dixie rule, best animal selection, sick music, etc.

The platformer to end all platformers. Period. It literally doesn't get better than DKC2. Challenging, perfect music, awe-inspiring environments, cool enemies and boss fights, plenty of hidden goodies, etc. Love that game.

Been playing Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I was expecting it to be really frustrating (I don't have the attention span to play puzzle games) but these puzzles are intriguing and actually make me want to solve them on my own, whereas in most other games I just look for the solution online. Had great success with the verbal problems, but have had some difficulty in the "spatial"(?) ones. Very surprised that I ended up liking it, to be honest.

My main problem with the Curious Village is that I felt the quality of the puzzles started to unravel near the end. It's an enjoyable series in general, though.
